Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 21st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good morning, 42 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. I have several yew trees growing in pots and yesterday they became a sail in the wind. They are usually tied down but were moved for pruning access and we forgot. So now they are wrestled upright again and staked and tied so they will move with the wind but hopefully stay upright.

Dealing with the trees and sorting out a med issue with the pharmacy was about all I accomplished yesterday, so I’m making no plans for today. I’ll just see what happens.

As always my best wishes to all.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 30 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 45. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We are down to about a foot of snow cover and I suspect most of that will be gone by the end of the weekend as it will be both warm and rainy tomorrow.

The House passed the American Rescue Plan yesterday and it heads to the Senate to be amended, we hope to find a way to encourage companies to institute their own minimum wage in lieu of a federal minimum wage. I haven’t been following it closely enough to know if Senate Democrats will add other amendments but when they are done, it goes back to the House for another vote and then on to Biden to sign. Most of the purists on the left appear (so far) to be unwilling to shoot down the bill, pragmatically(!) taking the bad with the abundance of very good. I know that most of them want the Senate to kill the filibuster over the minimum wage but that is simply not going to happen. It will be killed when something that Joe Manchin really wants is about to go down in defeat at the hands of his Republican friends. I think that there could be something that might do that but we are more likely to kill the filibuster when we win a few more Senate seats in 2022. From the CPAC headlines, the Republican Party is determined to primary every Senator who has not kissed tRump’s bloated ass – I think that might make more seats winnable for us. We shall see!

I hate when Democratic presidents go to Texas and was glad that Joe and Jill made it home safely. I also hate when the left-of-the-left can’t hold their fire for even a freaking 100 days to let Joe Biden get his administration assembled and policies in place. What the hell did they want him to do, nuke Saudi Arabia, make the Saudi king arrest and imprison his own son and heir apparent?? Maybe let it play out for a while and see what additional sanctions may be coming out? And yes Joe Biden has to retaliate for the attack on U.S. troops in Syria and no I don’t like it but it is what it is. In a perfect world, no one would attack anyone – and turning the other cheek would be a sign of strength instead of an invitation to shoot someone in the face. But it is not a perfect world and we can just hope that the tone has been set and we won’t be tested often. The same people who attacked Barack Obama as a killer over his drone policy are not happy that a demented ignoramus is no longer in charge of our military and are resharpening their knives. Meh.

I will search through the White House press room links and see if there is anything I can use to put up a weekly post. It may not be until tomorrow, though, as I have a full morning of projects to try to get ahead of. I am getting my second Pfizer this afternoon and since there is a possibility that I might not be able to work tomorrow, I need to get essential projects done. I am hoping it is just the sore arm that most people report but I have to be prepared.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Saturday Meese – light snow, then sleet , then rain here today in Kingston NY.
    Puerto Rico

  4. Good morning. Another misty day here. Going to get groceries & make next week’s lunch — a sweet potato/black bean/mango dish. And get in a walk.

  5. It’s 38 heading for mid 60s and while it was sunny when I got up the clouds are already moving in for this afternoon/evening’s rain. Yesterday we generated 3.5 KWHs and the m-t-d is 115 with only today and tomorrow left in the month. I’m hoping the clouds will shift around a bit and let the sun through until the actual rain-bearing ones get here.

The new kitty is a little food thief. Not surprising of course in a young, small, lived-rough cat but not helpful. I’ve been bringing Murf’s dish up when he’s not eating to keep the twins out of it. I’m going to have to be even more careful to bring his dish up with 3 who thing the best food in the world is found in Murf’s dish (and not their own dishes which have exactly the same kibble in them). Anyway, keep Holding the Good Thoughts for the vet visit Monday.

    Maybe I’ll bake today. Not “coffee break” muffin bread but something just a smidge sweeter and with a little more cocoa for “dessert”. Or not. I really don’t like desserts that much. But they smell so good baking. 😁 Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 32 and partly sunny in Bellingham. It’s good I didn’t plan on doing much yesterday, because I didn’t. I’ve had an uncomfortable cold sore outbreak but thankfully it’s easing and I’m feeling better. Now perhaps I can remember what day of the week it is!

Reading The Chronicles of St Mary’s books have been a good distraction. I’m reading The Rest is History now. Three more books to go and a few short stories and then I’ll need to find a new easy reading diversion.

    Best wishes to all.
