Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 28th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 39 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

So Major League Baseball did the right thing and will be pulling the All Star Game out of Georgia. Not out of Atlanta, by the way; the racists running the racist-logoed and racist-chanting team had already moved the stadium out of Atlanta because there were too many blah people there. I was shocked – MLB is very white and very trumpy – but I guess someone pointed out that their civic engagement initiative from 2020 (“we must all vote”) looked like a self-serving lie if they shrank from the first opportunity to actually DO something to show that they cared about democracy. Something I read suggested that they heard from players and coaches who would not go to Georgia which could have pushed them to move more quickly. There is plenty of time to find a new venue, (maybe Milwaukee where Hank Aaron – who is going to be honored at the game – started and ended his career) and to get the branding in place. Hank Aaron, by the way, strongly supported civil rights and voting rights and would likely approve of this decision. Republicans will now boycott baseball (insert eyeroll emoji here) just like they boycotted the NFL because when uppity (“haughty” if you are John Boehner) Black people want civil rights, that is too much for them. They will watch them play in games and run races but god forbid that they have representation!! Too bad that the guy holding on so strongly to the filibuster in the Senate comes from a white majority state where the Democrats come more from the KKK tradition rather than the Kennedy/Johnson tradition. We need HR1.

As always, at the beginning of the month – after the hectic month-end push has ended – it takes me a while to re-engage with my project list. Maybe I should try to get ahead of it this month. Or maybe I should take it easy for a couple of days!

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good morning, all. Currently 50, so not cool enough for the heater but definitely not warm. Watching the news & eating my almond butter sandwich. Today: pick up groceries, maybe cook one of next week’s dishes, and get in a walk.

  3. Saturday Meese. Got second shot yesterday and fell back asleep this morning after being uncomfortably sore. 38 going up to 53 here in Kingston NY

    Puerto Rico

Protest at the Vieques boat terminal, as part of a day of demonstration at all ATM terminals. On Isla Nena, they are demanding better boat service and the hospital that the government has promised so much

  4. It’s 49 heading for 69 this 1st Saturday in April. The morning started sunny but it’s already gotten over it. Yesterday we got a bit over 18 KWHs bringing the m-t-d to 37.6 – which is very good. Especially considering if the clouds don’t move off again soon we’ll be lucky to generate double-digits at all today.

Good for the MLB – although I read it took a lot of corporate pressure (not players, they don’t care what the players think) to get that decision. Now if they’d just pull the racist names and mascots. . . It really would be nice if they’d move it to Milwaukee. But the fact that they did pull it from GA under these circumstances does more to honor Hank Aaron than just about anything else they could do.

My hands are better but I’m not gonna push it today. At least I don’t plan on pushing it today. LOL. Combining the vagueries of my chimney with nightlight savings time means we’ve reached the time of year when evening fires are problematic. The stove doesn’t start putting out heat for almost 2 hours from the time the fire is started but if it’s too warm outside 2 hours before my bedtime I don’t start one in time. Not liking a house full of smoke which is what I get if it’s too warm outside. So I want one to warm my hands and feet by before I go to bed but. . .

    Anyway, stuff to do online and off. This is the 2nd year in a row I’ve missed the opening of the Farmers Market on the Square. They are actually doing it on the Square this year but nope. Not until I’m fully vaccinated. So around Beltane. Meanwhile, more coffee and over to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 44 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Our sons will be here soon to move a big pile of dirt downhill to the veggie garden. It was dumped at the top of the back steps where we normally park the cars, making me very nervous re what could happen with a hard rain!

Easter arrived early this year and I’m not ready so I’ll scramble around today and do something for in town family and send e-cards to out of town family. Best wishes to all.

  6. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It was bitterly cold and a little windy at 6 a.m. Now it’s mostly sunny and 45 F., going up to 56 F.

Because I’m trying to wean myself from sleeping pills, I didn’t use anything except lavender oil to get to sleep last night. Woke up at 3:30, then realized at 4:30 realized I could not avoid getting out of bed for the usual reason. Little E. was sleeping right beside my bed on the pull-out child-sized sofa, so I just grabbed my Kindle and started reading a book for two hours. Now I feel ready to drop!

We’re wildly excited because the window cleaners were here to wash the outside windows. They hadn’t been done in three years. Last year was Covid, the year before that we were out of town, and the windows were looking awful. Now they look clean and bright.

Little E. is over here. Children are enchanting: I have a lot to do, so I gave him a large, empty box to explore. It’s the one my new printer came in. First it was a house, then it turned into a car. He cut out wheels and pasted them on the sides of the box so he coudl drive it. He’s still in it. Then he took all the small empty boxes we happen to have sitting around, sealed them closed with cellotape, and put them on the ledge outside our flat. Boy, are the delivery people going to be surprised! This child is clearly going to grow up to work for UPS!

We’re just about to make apple smiles. After that I’ll get our lunch ready, and after that will be our NAP. He won’t nap, of course (too grownup for that), but he can play games on the Kindle or iPad while we rest. Dearly had an even worse night than I did.

Hope everyone at the Pond will have a good Saturday! Waiting for Matt G. to be arrested but no, sex with a minor is OK if you’re a Rethug. Someone remarked that it’s odd how no one is talking about the “border crisis.”
