Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Puerto Rico

Together we are invincible! Senate Bill 591 that sought to limit access to abortion in Puerto Rico was denied!

  2. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 27 degrees in Madison (feels like 18) with an expected daytime high of 21. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast. We officially had 3.2 inches of snow yesterday but because it landed in the afternoon, it led to a lot more traffic issues. There is a snow plow driver shortage because it is hard work, has crappy hours and probably doesn’t pay well enough to put up with the hassles. I have two errands to run today, one mid-morning and one right after lunch. I would hope that there would be no problems getting around – I don’t need to go far.

Harry Reid has passed away after fighting pancreatic cancer for 3 years. He was a good Senate Majority Leader (about 1,000 times smarter than Chuck Schumer) and he and Nancy Pelosi got some good legislation passed for Barack Obama. I wonder how his passing will be marked – people slobbered all over slimey trumper Bob Dole but there are different standards of respect for right-wing politicians and Democrats.

I am over the anti-vaxxers – hospitals should assign one COVID room (tent?) with a single ventilator and an unvaccinated #RepublicanDeathCult nurse and they can can all wait in line for that room. The rest of the hospital can be made available for vaccinated patients and medical providers and they can have their elective surgeries and be helped when they get into accidents or have a sudden illness. Like people who refuse to wear helmets when riding a motorcycle, they can have their FreeDumbs as long as they stay away from the rest of us.

I have a couple of projects I am working on and I better get back to them before people start working.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning. Our warm streak continues, it’ll get up to 81 today. Working from home, happy the Dr. Who marathon continues. Sad about Harry Reid, but happy that people are sharing some interesting stories about him.

  4. It’s 48 heading for 61, very overcast, and rain expected. It’s sprinkling now. Yesterday’s rain was about 1/2″ and the sky cleared around noon. We generated 4.875 KWHs and the m-t-d is 150.4 with 3 generation days left in the month. So 160 – or even 170 – is possible. IF the sun comes out.

Harry Reid was a good man, a good senator, and a very good leader of the Senate by whatever title. He knew how the Senate worked and how to make the rules work for him to get things done. I don’t know if we’ll ever see his like again. (Partly because of this habit Dems have gotten into of thinking the Senate is just a steppingstone to the WH. And Dem presidents who came from the Senate pulling our best senators out for Cabinet positions.)

The tabby I’ve been feeding regularly over the holidays and who is usually on the blanket on top of the box-cave I’ve set up on the carport wasn’t there this morning. I’m wondering/hoping he has a “real” family who’ve just been gone and are now back. (There are people ignorant enough to think if they set out a feeding station for while they’re gone the cat they meant that food for will actually get it.) Hold the Good Thought.

    I haven’t connected with anybody yet this morning. So Hope and Holding Good Thoughts in all directions. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good Wednesday morning, MoosePeeps. It’s another overcast day here in Ashburnikins. It was supposed to rain this morning, but of course it didn’t. It’s supposed to rain this evening, but it won’t. We are now 8 inches under for the year.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it’s 47 F., going up to 59 F., or so they say. It’ll be mild and showery until next Monday, at which time it will turn cold.

Hurray for the Virginia redistricting map that keeps Jennifer Wexton safely in the 10th! Spanburger and Luria, two Congresswomen who won their seats after TFG took office in 2017, are in a somewhat dodgy situation. However, their districts have always been dodgy for Democrats.

Harry Reid was a good man. I’m enjoying reading stories about him.

#PrinceWilliamAffair is trending. Makes a change from American politics, dunnit? I had never heard of it before, but apparently it happened in 2015.

Yesterday we spent our time getting ready for, enjoying, and recovering from lunch with a long-time family friend. I was gratified to see her looking so pretty and happy. She’s divorced from her controlling, abusive ex-husband and is now married to an extremely well-off man (they have not one, but four Range Rovers), and teaching art by Zoom five evenings a week. It was wonderful to catch up with all her news. She presented us with a a dozen eggs from her backyard chickens, so we had scrambled eggs on toast last night.
The eggs are lovely to look at and very fresh.

Dearly and I both had terrible nights, so today is getting off to a very slow start. However, my energy is at its caffeine-fueled highest in the morning, so I’d better get with it.

Wishing a peaceful day to all at the Pond!

    • I read about the Prince William thing a while back, apparently the affair is what caused the rift with Harry. Even before Meghan, I remember that Harry yelled at him, how could he do this after what happened to their mother.

  6. Good morning, 18 and partly sunny but a cold breeze is blowing so it’s freezing outside so I’m staying indoors and warm today. I’ve done little but rest since Christmas, but I think I can feel some energy returning. I’ll start doing laundry soon and see how long I last. Best wishes to all.

  7. Thursday Meese. 37 foggy going up to 44 here in Kingston NY.
    Puerto Rico

Increase in hospitalizations for COVID-19 impacts medical personnel

  8. Good morning. In the office today. Cooler, but it will still get to the upper 70s this afternoon. Going to walk after work, didn’t want to get up before 5to squeeze it in before.

  9. It’s 40 going to 65 and will be sunny once the fog burns off. Yesterday only gave us .2″ rain but it stayed cloudy most of the day so it also only gave us 2.2 KWHs generation. The m-t-d is 152.7 so we’ll definitely get over last year’s 153.7 and be in 5th place for December production.

One of the victims of the Denver shooting was the daughter of Amelia’s best friend from childhood. This is on top of losing her friend losing her parents over the last 6 months. Amelia’s devastated of course. And feels helpless. Basically we are helpless in these situations.

    My hands are cold but working so far. Sinusitis and 5 hours of sleep last night. I’m going to have to do my end of year stuff no matter how fuzzy my brain is. Meanwhile, there’s twitter chores and Dee’s diary. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Gods, how awful!

People, I want to state right now that I am Pro-Life. Yes, I am PRO the right to live my life and go about my everyday business, without the risk of being randomly murdered by gunfire by some guy who was too ugh-ly to get a date and chose to take it out on others. I want all of us to have that Right to Life.

  10. Good Thursday morning, Meese! Guess what, it RAINED during the night, and the rain continued into the morning, so late that Monty refused to go out until 9 a.m. He hates rain, even though we bought him a little red raincoat lined with warm fleece.

Right now it’s cloudy, 47 F., and working its way up to 56 F. Rainwater is still gurgling through the gutters but I can’t see any actually falling.

Well, with Omicron spreading among staff and residents here, I’ve just about convinced myself NOT to go to the New Year’s Eve party tomorrow night. And I’ve already bought the ingredients for pigs-in-blankets! Damn. I might just make them anyway, slink in there cloaked and masked, leave them for the others, and slink out again. So far we feel absolutely fine. I had a cold, but with oxygen intake at 95%, a temp. of 97.something, and the ability to taste and smell, I’m sure it wasn’t Covid.

I don’t even feel like going out to buy that ham. I might feel like it tomorrow, but I’m not sure. I couldn’t see any black-eyed peas in the grocery store yesterday, so didn’t get any. Whispering: I know, as a Texas-born person I’m supposed to eat them on New Year’s Day for luck, but in the past I did that strictly to please my mother. I don’t actually like them. Don, born and bred in London, doesn’t like them any more than he likes okra or popcorn, which is to say not at all.

Hoping everyone here at the Pond will have a wonderful, quiet day.

Oh, I want to share something with you if MM will permit me:

    https://pressrun.media/p/how-the-new-york-times-covered-white?r=8wvse&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

It’s about how differently the MSM has treated Kamala from hateful or stupid white males such as Cheney, Quayle, and Pence.

  11. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 19 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 21. Mostly cloudy skies.

Just time for a quick check in as I spent the morning looking for a warmer place to live instead of being productive!!

    See all y’all later!

      • No, Colorado is not! I am still looking at Arizona but this morning I got a HARD FREEZE alert from the Tucson newspaper newsletter I subscribe to. Although to be fair, that probably happens only a handful of times a year.

  12. Good morning, 25 and cloudy, with about 2″ of new snow. I don’t have to go anywhere so I won’t. RonK is getting restless so he will go for a walk but the cold is too much for my arthritic joints so I’ll stay close to the firepit on the patio. We’ve kept the snow brushed off the outdoor shelters so they are not in danger of collapse. It’s nice to be outdoors and relatively sheltered from the cold. Best wishes to all.

  13. Good Friday morning, Moosekind, and wow, it’s the last day of the year. How will we celebrate? I’ll start falling asleep right after watching “Washington Week,” then jerking awake and lurching off to bed. I used to like Yamiche Alcindor because she’s so cute, but she has begun to parrot Rethug talking points. I still like to study her eye makeup every week because it’s so artistic.

Well, yawn, we were up and making the Early Morning Tea at 5 a.m. Dearly had a rotten night. Mine was OK until about 4 but then went steadily downhill. Gods, I’m sleepy.

We will go out this morning to buy the ham. We will NOT go to the party. I find the New Year’s celebrations on TV in NYC too manic, too tiresome, and too raucous to watch. I like to see the New Year breaking in New York, Paris, London, and Sydney, though, so we’ll stay up at least that late.

My research on Kamala’s portfolio is a bit sketchy so far (using the word in its original sense, not the modern one). I’ll have to do a deep dive after New Year.

    Happy New Year, Moosekind!

    • All the traditional media types feel the need to attack those in power – if they are Democrats. I don’t know if it is disappointment because Joe Biden didn’t deliver ponies or if they need to prove their “fair and balanced” chops because of the lie-that-will-not-die that journalists are all liberals. A lot of the people on MSNBC are laying the blame for everything on Joe Biden from COVID deaths to Merrick Garland being unwilling to chase down tRump with a pitchfork, lock him up, and execute him. They want Republicans in charge because it is a non-stop sh*tshow and that sells papers and clicks. Bastids.

  14. New Year’s Eve Meese. Foggy and rain – 40 degrees here in Kingston NY going up to 44.
Don’t know if I’ll be able to wake up to see the New Year in – am cooking our traditional meal for tomorrow today – Virginia ham with black-eyed peas and rice.

    Puerto Rico

    RIP Roberto Clemente

    A 1993 documentary tribute:

  15. I got in a walk this morning — 4 minute-long running segments. And I’m absolutely going to walk tomorrow morning, also. Got my good-luck soup made, it makes black-eyed peas close to bearable. Watching Dr. Who, right now is the Rose Parks episode, one of my favorites ever.

  16. It’s 55 heading for 68 and sunny this last day of 2021 – but the clouds are already moving in, the rain will come after dark, and the drop into deep freeze starts tomorrow midday. Since that’s “normal” for this time of year, no matter how unpleasant and even dangerous to be out in, I’m calling it a good omen. Yesterday we generated 5.6 KWHs and start the day with 158.36 accumulated – so we should get to 160 for the month even with clouds moving in. I hope.

The year isn’t really going out any better than it came in. But there were some good things that happened over the course of it. Most of “my” folks have a path forward now. Only a few are still hanging in limbo. Holding the Good Thought that paths forward open up for them soon.

    My only “celebration” of the New Year will be to change out the calendars before I go to bed. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  17. Good morning, meeses! Friday that feels like a Saturday …

It is 28 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 27. Isolated flurries are in the forecast. A big winter storm expected tomorrow with the heaviest snow east and south of us – Milwaukee is expected to get 8 inches!

I am keeping my eye on the fires near Boulder – I have relatives in the area who were evacuated, they have no idea if their house is still standing. Wildfires in December? It may not matter if our democracy is dismantled, it is difficult to imagine our planet surviving much longer. It will certainly be accelerated should the Republicans retake power.

I have a half dozen little projects started that I need to finish to be able to close 2021. The ones that involve personal accounts I need to do today – the ones related to my company can be backdated because it is accrual basis. Having the weekend to finish 2021 will help some.

See all y’all later – and probably next year!

  18. Good morning, 20 and partly sunny, with more snow expected tomorrow. We will have to dig our way out of the alley when it’s safe to drive again. Our son has a heavy truck with 4 wheel drive and he’s able to safely drive on the hilly streets so RonK will prolly go to the grocery store with him today. We don’t have plans for tonight, but will toast the end of 2021. Best wishes to all.
