Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 6th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Saturday Meese – Weird weather here in Kingston – 41 going up to 52, which is a heat wave for us.

    Watching events unfold in PR – talking to my friend who is visiting her sister in Dorado, the scene of today’s beach demonstrations.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 9 degrees in Madison (feels like -6) with an expected daytime high of 14. Sunny skies expected but clouding up with flurries overnight.

    I got up when I wanted to this morning instead of like yesterday when some knothead leaned on his horn at 3:30am then at 3:35am then at 3:40am. I would just doze back to sleep and he would do it again. He finally left the neighborhood after circling the block honking his horn in a staccato pattern. In any event, I started a few projects this morning and did work on the short list of what I need to do in March which is going to be an extremely busy month. January was treading water after year end, February is cleanup month and in March it will finally be time to get things done. I will be glad when February is finished – there are too many twos on my screen and I keep transposing them. 02-02-2022 was bad enough but now we have 02-12-2022 and we will soon have 02-22-2022 or as they say in Canada 22-02-22. ::head explodes::

    Today is Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. I hope that no one ever calls the Republican Party the Party of Lincoln again (except ironically). I don’t presume to speak for him but I am fairly certain he would be aghast to see what happened to the party formed to oppose the spread of slavery. I suppose the Dixiecrats who used to be the Democratic Party and whose sole purpose was to block Black progress feel the same way about what their party became. Thankfully we don’t have the Party of Calhoun as a popular way to refer to us! I think if the modern Democratic Party had a forefather it should be FDR with LBJ as a strong second. In any event, Happy Birthday, Abe Lincoln. Your legacy is secure even thought your one-time political party is trash and should be burned to the ground.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning. Supposed to get colder throughout the day, maybe some rain. Today I’m going to cook vegetables for next week’s pasta. I checked tomorrow’s TV schedule, and as I have been every year of my life, I’m astounded that none of the other channels make any effort to counter-program that stupid football game. Going to re-subscribe to Disney, because having something to watch will be worth the $8 for the month.

  4. The air temp is 25, windchill is 15, going up to 35 and the clouds are white and fluffy – and mostly not between the sun and my PV system. 😁 They were pretty much that way yesterday, thank Goddess/es, so that while there was very little blue to be seen we still generated 10 KWHs – m-t-d now 47.5 and still gaining although still nowhere near on track yet.

    This a time when the stories of the Elders – like us – about how different it was when we were young, especially how different the weather was when we were young, is “gawd’s own truth” and not just old wo/men scoring off the kids. Even just 40 years ago today’s weather would have been an unseasonably warm day to have gotten above freezing at all. Not a temporary dip into chilly weather from the surrounding 50s & even 60s we’ve been having and will have again next week.

    Politically, environmentally, we’ve missed so many chances to make things better. To prevent and avoid major life-threatening crises altogether. Forced onto, and to remain on, the deadly path by “colonizer culture”. Deplorable action/reaction to pandemic is just one more aria in the genocidal/suicidal opera. sigh. I don’t know if Decent folks can shut down this show before the Final Curtain, but we can try – and are trying.

    As best I can tell, everything’s about the same for everybody. Including me. So. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 32 and sunny outside my window today. We enjoyed lunch with our sons yesterday. But after going to the Verizon store for a new phone for the birthday boy I needed a long nap. Several low key events instead of a big party is best for both of us this year. We’ll have a birthday lunch for family next Saturday but I’ve got all week to prepare. Best wishes to all.
