Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: April 10th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Saturday moaning, Meese! Today I wish to moan about the thunderstorms we’re supposed to have tonight. Any other day I’d be happy about the promise of droplets of water, but not tonight, the night of the full moon—the Pink Moon, if you please. I’ll have to Google to see why it’s called that.

This morning the sky is overcast in Ashburn, although sunlight was trying to break through earlier. The current temp. is 61 F., going up to 77 F., winds 10 to 15 mph.

After a day of doing absolutely nothing, I do feel better. I might feel completely better if I’d had a decent night’s rest, but nupe—four hours max! At least this time I didn’t make the mistake of just getting up. I fired up the Kindle and read a book before trying to drop off again.

Today, mucho housework-o, which I hate! Floors demand to be swept and mopped, carpets beseech to be vacuumed. Little Ethan is arriving tomorrow in advance of a day off on Easter Monday. We’ll have to listen to a 15-minute tirade against Arlington County Public Schools and the extreme, radical blueness of Arlington County politics before Elder Son declares himself to be an Independent. Eric takes everything so personally: the weather, the economy, school closings, you name it.

Still feeling a bit tired but there’s much less actual pain. A friend offered the opinion yesterday that the leg issue was my body’s way of telling me I’ve been doing too much so I need to stop and rest. It’s true that I was scurrying around like a madwoman, organizing the birthday party.

I need to start work. Still have to go to the supermarket because I couldn’t manage it yesterday, and we want to have lamb chops tomorrow.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • Here you go!

The Pink Moon in April gets its name from pink wildflowers that bloom in the early spring. It is thought that the name comes from the brightly-colored pink phlox wildflowers that are native to North America and that often bloom around the time of April’s Full Moon.

The Native American names refer to the spring thaw and the signs of new growth each year—including names like the Breaking Ice Moon and The Moon of the Red Grass Appearing.

Common names in Europe also refer to the budding and birth of spring: with grass sprouting, birds laying eggs, and people planting seeds. The Celts had names like Budding Moon, New Shoots Moon, Seed Moon, and Growing Moon. A Neo-Pagan name is Awakening Moon.

The Anglo-Saxons called it Egg Moon, which is often referenced as a possible reason for the emergence of the modern Easter Bunny laying Easter eggs.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 59 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 84, sunny skies are in the forecast.

The failed democracy of Wisconsin has been locked in by the Sanders-Collins Supreme Court decision to ratfk red and purple states to advance their goal of minority rule. In 2018, the state overwhelmingly went blue in statewide elections but could not dent the legislative gerrymanders put in place by the Republicans. In 2020, the state voted for Biden and could only gain one seat in the legislature. In 2022, the Republican legislature re-gerrymandered the state so that Democrats would have no chance to regain control EVER and the U.S. Supreme Court said “this is good” and supported them. Should the Republicans take back the governor’s office, it will be game over for Good Government in Wisconsin for our lifetime. :(

To Donald J. Trump with his dream of being a kingmaker in the Republican Party in 2022 – please proceed! Backing the man who said “I don’t give a damn about Ukraine” will surely be a winning strategy in a state with a large Ukrainian American population and many others who hail from the same part of Europe that is being threatened by Russian aggression. I hope Democrats choose well in their primary and win that open Ohio Senate seat.

I woke up this morning with a short list of things I needed to do and got only one of them done. I need to get back to it so that I can have the rest of the day off.

    See all y’all later!

  3. It’s 50 and raining. We had our high of 61 just after midnight and will be hanging around the 50 mark for the rest of today and tomorrow. Socked in pretty much, too. Although the PV system did come on, briefly, long enough to generate an hour’s worth of running the lights I currently have on. sigh. Yesterday we generated 14.3 KWHs which brought the m-t-d to 213 – not on track and losing ground. We’ll see what today – and the rest of the month – brings.

    I got more or less good sleep but I’m groggy this morning. Haven’t checked in with anybody yet. But yesterday things were pretty much the same as the day before and I’m guessing they still are. So far so good with my hands this morning. I’m not sure that ache in my right leg is going to go away, but the shingles rash is gone. Of course I was silly enough to do a little yard work yesterday – a very little – and so now have a rash on my left hand and wrist. Oh well. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
