Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 24th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It’s 72 heading for 80 and off and on raining. It’s also dark enough I’ve got the lights on. Although the PV system is on, it’s cranking at 34 watts. Yesterday we generated 6.5 KWHs which is at least enough to cover usage without the A/C. The m-t-d is 492 so if today and tomorrow can generate at least 4 each we’ll reach 500 – it would have to be 14 each to reach the A/C-use goal of 520 and that’s not going to happen. But at least we should – I hope – reach 500.

Every single time we think we’ve got things situated for Amelia’s move something happens/doesn’t work out. Hold the Good Thoughts. It’s got to be done by next weekend. (Which I was thinking was the 5th & 6th when it’s actually the 6th & 7th. I really am not braining well these days.)

    Just took the molasses spice muffin bread out of the oven. Now to let the kitchen cool down again before I close up. IF I close up. It’s still 72. LOL. Healing Energy for everybody who needs it. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Oh, bfitz, I wish all your rain could go to the U.K., which is experiencing its hottest, driest summer since 1911, and leave you with enough sunshine to cover the air conditioning use!

Your molasses spice muffin bread sounds delicious. I bet the house smells good!

      • We need it here, too. The ground’s still hard and until yesterday’s rain the grassy was crunchy. But yeah, I need the sunshine too. (The house does smell lovely.)

    • We have not used our oven since May! For one thing, it heats the small living space up too much and for another thing, it is an electric oven and we are on a Time-of-Use pricing plan that charges more for energy used in the summer between 3pm and 7pm (when we would want to heat up the oven for a meal). We have 4 pizzas we bought when we first moved here that have been sitting in the freezer – I think they will keep. If I am going to pay premium prices for electricity, I would prefer it go to air conditioning which is a necessity. It means getting baked goods at our local markets – I have found that the Sprouts Farmers Market has excellent muffins and a wide variety of gluten-free bakery products for my daughter. And we have a really good (and cheap) pizza place about a block away.

      • This is the 2nd time I’ve used my oven since May. And may or may not use it in August at all. We shall see. I’m glad you have acceptable alternatives. Around here they are few, very expensive, and frequently I don’t like them anyway. LOL.

  2. Good Saturday morning, Meese, and happy Lammas Eve! For once we have a fair morning, 76 F., blue skies, and sunshine. It’s not supposed to rain today. Our high will be 87 F. I’m going to put the porch cushions out.

Had the night from HELL last night, in and out of bed into the bathroom like a jack-in-the-box. I know I’ll collapse after lunch. Hope we can get some sleep, because we’re going to little Ethan’s birthday supper this evening.

I’ll never forget when we visited the hospital after Ethan was born. He was in the room, the pediatrician was bending over him to check him, the parents were of course there, and there were two sets of grandparents who were unable to stop smiling. Eight people in that tiny hospital room! It was weird.

At 11 EDT today, the funeral in Keller, Texas (outskirts of Dallas-Fort Worth) will be livestreamed. I hope I can watch it on line. Daughter will be there. After everything’s over, she and SIL will head to the airport, there to spend the night in a nearby hotel before flying up here tomorrow. Can’t wait to see them!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. I don’t suppose we won the Mega-Millions PowerBall last night, but if we had, I would have used it to help the people in Kentucky and California.

    • I did not win and will therefore have to work today. I am hoping to shut down early and get a walk in before the rain starts.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 75 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 88. Monsoonal rains expected around noon. Yesterday the rain expected at noon came at about 4pm – a torrential downpour that got the washes flowing. I am not sure how much rain we have had this season but I sense that it is more than normal. The rain is great, the accompanying humidity, not so great. I am looking forward to see what an Arizona August is like – it is supposed to be cooler and dryer than July.

Why does every story about a win for Joe Biden and the Democrats have to include a caveat (usually in the title or the sub-head) that it “probably won’t last” or “he is still wildly unpopular.” How about presenting the win as a win and letting the people decide if they need to still hate him? Sheesh. And yes, this is a rhetorical question, I know why the media presents the stories this way; the horse race sells papers, good government – especially good Democratic government – does not. Bastids.

I hope people aren’t forgetting that women are still dying in abortion banned Republican controlled states and that women who want to control their own bodies and their lives are still being denied access to abortions. As summer winds down and school starts again (next week here in Tucson!), it will be easy for people with busy lives to ignore the crises facing our country. Keep up the heat on Republican murderers.

    See all y’all later!

  4. Good morning, 76 and sunny outside my window now. The house is relatively cool but will heat up this afternoon when the high of 85 arrives.

Our son is well enough to be grouchy today but I’ll go see him this afternoon regardless. The chest drain is very uncomfortable but infection crud is still draining so he’s tethered to a hospital bed for the next few days. The pic line will go in when his blood tests infection free, then the infusion team will sort out how he will manage that part. It’s all very complicated and I shudder to think of how much it’s all costing. He has insurance but but the unknown of what they will pay and what he will owe is worrisome.

I really appreciate your words of support, thank you. As always, my best wishes to all.
