Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 4th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, 52, cloudy and breezy outside my window today. Queen Elizabeth’s passing released a flood of memories so yesterday was a reflective and at times tearful day.

We’re having a family lunch here on Sunday so today will be busy with food shopping and as much prep as my knees will allow me to do. I did stop at the fabric store yesterday and was dismayed at how hard it was for me to walk around the store. Trying to do some of the things I enjoyed doing prior to covid seclusion makes the changes in my mobility all to real. Oh well, I can still hobble forth so that’s what I will do. Best wishes to all.

  2. Puerto Rico

  3. It was 59 when I got up, 61 now, heading for 86 and sunny at the moment. (I’m cold – LOL) We’re still dealing with that weird pseudo-monsoon routine where it clouds up every afternoon as if it were going to rain, like a real monsoon, during what otherwise would be peak production time. We got 10.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 88.3 is gaining on 300 for the month.

Well, Miskwaki is still with us. Not out of the woods but better enough the vet wouldn’t have put him down even if Aji and Wings had asked him to which of course they didn’t. Amelia’s slowly doing better – spends at least part of her day organizing stuff and integrating cats rather than sleeping or trying to sleep – but is concerned about her brother. His house is directly in the path of one of the wildfires, may even have been engulfed by now. Wealthy jerkwad that he is, favored of their father, his house was also the repository of most of the family treasures. (And Amelia being Amelia she wouldn’t wish being burned out even on the brother who not only hasn’t helped her at all over the last 30 years but has chased off many of her former friends/helpers.) Jill’s stalker seems to have gotten tired of signing her up for anti-Semitic groups so has now signed her up for a couple of anti-Palestinian ones. Fineena’s dog Harriet caught her head in a vase and managed, in trying to get it off herself, to break the toilet. That’s $500 Fineena doesn’t have, most of which goes to the plumber to replace the toilet. And last I checked the Las Vegas NM Jewish community was still $90K away from being able to buy back their historic synagogue from the Santa Fe Archdiocese with only 5 days left to raise it. Good Thoughts & Healing Energy to everyone.

    Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Maybe some wealthy donor will step up and finish up the funding. If the Santa Fe Archdiocese had any decency, they would reduce the price to the cash raised. But the Church is very VERY good at protecting their money. :(

      • Far from having the decency to reduce the price, they originally gave the Jewish community 60 days to raise the money, then a few days later cut it to 30 days. And the Church could give it to the Jewish community for what they’ve raised and still make money since they bought for pennies on the dollar back in 1950 (when they’d almost harassed the Jewish community out of existence).

  4. Good morning. Doing laundry & watching the news. MSNBC is trying to balance coverage of events in England with, well, the news. Later today: groceries and maybe some cooking for next week.

  5. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 68 muggy degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 86. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We got a nice storm yesterday, complete with thunderous booms and moments of torrential downpours. The plants are happy. This morning at 3:29am MST the full moon rose. I saw her at about 4:30 when she was over the building to the west. I guess this is the Harvest Moon but it does not feel very harvesty in the desert! No rain expected today but probably tomorrow and very likely Monday.

I guess I was naive when I thought that defeating tRump in 2020 and then turning back his coup in 2021 would mean that he would not consume the news cycle. I am sick of seeing his ugly face, hearing his ugly words and reacting to the horrific damage his political party is wreaking on America. I do and I don’t care about his criming, I do care a lot about retaining the Senate – we need Joe Biden to nominate and the Senate to confirm a counterbalance to the ghastly incompetence of the Federalist Society (litmus test "will they ratfk every decent thing in America?"). I think I will start taking my news in smaller doses.

Still plodding through my must-do list that was set aside because of interruptions – most of it is mind-numbingly boring. I need to find a hobby that takes me away from a computer and any close-in work but I think that is going to have to wait until the weather gets cooler because it should also be outside.

    See all y’all later!

Oh, dear Goddess, so am I! I really thought we’d get rid of that orangeness, but no such luck.

  6. (What day is this? What planet is this?)

Good Saturday morning, Meese. Today is getting off to a very slow start. I’m halfway through changing the sheets on the bed, grooming myself for the day, and so on. Just called an English friend to commiserate with her.

It’s cloudy and 69 F. at the moment. Rain is expected late tonight and heavy rain tomorrow morning. This makes me think I should go buy that roast chicken today. Unable to bear the thought of another Home-produced meal tonight, I’ve decided to make Crabmeat Pasta Salad. Must think of something for afters, but not sure what.

Have been glued to the telly. How exceedingly tiresome of CNN’s presenters to yap nonstop through the ceremonies. I don’t want to listen to them, I wanted to listen to the Proclamation and to the sound of trumpets. Rarely hear trumpets, so this was to be a treat.

Went looking for the Moon last night, saw Her at 9:30, looking as gorgeous as ever. I knew we wouldn’t be able to see Her tonight, as it’s supposed to rain. We in the District-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) are cursed as far as seeing the full moon goes. (First-world problem, I know.)

I have to find a post office. We went looking yesterday and failed to find it, so I must be sure to do so today.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  7. Good morning, 55 and a smokey sky outside my window today. Wild fires are burning in the mountains so the air quality is not good. I’ve got a fairly busy day ahead with prep for tomorrow’s lunch. We shopped at Costco yesterday, so today will be flowers, baking, food prep, and filling the trays so others can help me carry them outdoors. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone, especially my grand kids. Best wishes to all.
