Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Wednesday Meese. 56 here in Kingston NY going up to a sunny 80.
    Was glad to see Congresswoman Val Demings address the Medicaid situation in Puerto Rico

    There are lots of Puerto Ricans in Florida.

  2. Good morning. Slept in, I was super sleepy yesterday so I thought it would be good to sleep. Today is wfh, so I’ll watch astronomy tv until it’s time to make calls. Happy to hear of Ken Starr’s death, the world is better for his absence.

  3. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It was 58 F. when we woke up this morning. We will have a week of sunny weather with temps in the low 80s and low humidity. Idyllic!

    Just wrote a letter to the Washington Poop suggesting that the 20-person election fraud team just appointed by Virginia’s (Rethuglican) AG Jason Miyares could start their investigation with the son of Goobernator Dumbkin. At age 17 in 2020, he twice attempted to fraudulently vote in the general election.

    This morning there’s a presentation about the Webb Telescope next door and this afternoon I need to get my hair done. So I’ve a busy day coming up.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and healing for bfitz’s hands.

    • {{{Diana}}} Thank you. They are better. And will probably stay that way – at least by mid morning when the overnight chill wears off – at least for the next 10 days. Heh. Healing Energy to you & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  4. It’s 58 heading for 87 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 11.3 KWHs and the m-t-d at 133.8 is at least on track for 300 for the month. And we’re over 3 MWHs for the year. Won’t make 4 this year but I think/hope we’ll come reasonably close.

    As far as I know everybody’s doing pretty much the same as they were yesterday. Hanging on. Which ain’t great but it’s good. I think. I’m off to the Co-op for a major supplement stock up before the stores get crowded. I’ll do my twitter stuff when I get back. Healing Energy to everyone. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 55 and cloudy outside my window today. The air is less smoky so the colors I see are more natural looking. Interesting how smoke in the air changes the colors of the sky and plants.
    I think I’ve found someone to help in the garden. She will meet with me here on Friday to discuss options and costs and I really hope we can find a way to work together. I just can’t do the physical work I used to be able to do so it’s time for assistance and for RonK and I to just focus on the garden areas we can enjoy maintaining. He loves to putter in the vegetable garden, and I can manage the pots and patio areas, but the rest of the garden is looking neglected so that’s where we need help.
    I woke up late yesterday and had to race out the door to get to my hair appointment and then I was just tired so it’s wasn’t much of a day. I need to tend to my desk today and as always laundry is waiting so I’ll be a busy as I want to be today. Best wishes to all.

    • {{{princesspat}}} Holding the Good Thought that the garden helper works out for you. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 84 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Just time for a hi and a bye. I was caught up in a gnarly project this morning and need to put eyes forward to it again.

    See all y’all later!

  7. Thursday Meese. Nippy 57 here in Kingston going up to 73. Watching Fiona approach PR and the USVI with trepidation.

    Roberto Clemente Day

  8. Walked again this morning – .92mi. Trying to not push since I’ve only been at it a few days, but there’s one hill that is so hard…. Anyway, here I am downtown, eating breakfast, drinking tea. Happy that the railroad strike was averted, was shocked reading about how badly those workers are treated. Have a good day, everyone!

  9. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 70 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 90. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Today officially ends monsoon season. It was a good one as far as rainfall goes for the second year in a row. Apparently, the monsoons don’t do much to help the reservoirs (except perhaps to not deplete them as quickly?) – the rain and snow in the mountains from December to March are what they are counting on. I won’t miss the thunderous booms but the brief intense rainstorms were a wonderful respite during the heat of the summer. I have windows open this morning and on my morning visit to the deck I was greeted with a coolish breeze.

    How can it possibly be legal to effectively kidnap 48 people and send them to a destination not of their choosing? Were migrants who showed up in Texas arrested by the Florida State Police? The saddest tweet ever, though, was the one that suggested that in MAGA Florida, voters there will be pleased that DeSantis is acting like a lawless dictator. Goddess help us.

    I had a too hectic day yesterday and I am trying to make some headway on the things I am supposed to be doing instead of the things that inserted themselves into my schedule. Help Desk is never predictable but when I spend the day doing things related to my own network it is particularly frustrating.

    See all y’all later!

    • My son suggested ICE or Border Patrol should arrest Abbott and DeSantis as “coyotes” since they’re transporting illegal immigrants across state lines. We should be so lucky!

      • From what I understand, they were not illegal immigrants but asylum seekers who were awaiting determination of their status. They were in the United States legally. This thing that the governors of Arizona, Texas and Florida are doing it despicable but it sounds like they are perfectly within their rights to move them out of their state and into someone else’s state. We are a terrible country.

  10. Good Thursday morning, Meese. It’s 66 F. and sunny in Ashburn, with low humidity—perfect! Yesterday was perfect too, but unfortunately right after breakfast I was stricken by violent stomach cramps, headache, and backache, which led to my spending the morning in bed. Therefore I was unable to attend the Webb Telescope presentation in the auditorium. Still queasy, I spent the early part of the afternoon in bed, rising a little past three to discover I could eat a slice of toast and honey, along with tea.

    Feel a lot better today although still too queasy to eat anything more than applesauce a few minutes ago. Dearly has taken Monty to get his rabies shot, so am not sure when he’ll be home. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I swept and mopped the kitchen floor and powder room floor and am now washing the area rugs. They can dry all day on the screened porch.

    Doctor Dearly administered a Covid test yesterday evening and it turned out I don’t have it. Well, my temperature was 97 F., proving that I am barely alive.

    Speaking of medical matters, although I’m sure y’all would rather I refrained as a gentlewoman should, I received a letter from the radiology people informing me that I do not have breast cancer. They kindly added, “Your breasts are not very dense.”

    “Oh, good,” I thought, “now I don’t have to give them an intelligence test.” Last year, after my mammogram, they wrote a letter saying that although I didn’t have breast cancer, my breasts were very dense. I didn’t know whether to put them on some kind of reducing diet or subject them to an IQ test, so I’m quite happy with this year’s results.

    Too much information, I’m sure. I’ve made the bed but the kitchen floor is still wet, so I can’t grab any toast and coffee yet.

    Wishing everyone at the Pond a splendid day. I’ll probably fall asleep over that 1,000-page biography. Wish that man had sat quietly at home instead of getting about so much.

  11. It’s 60 heading for 85 and sunny at the moment but clouds are already starting to move in. sigh. Yesterday we generated 11.65 KWHs and the m-t-d at 145.5 is still on track for 300. Hopefully we won’t lose too much ground today.

    I wasted 20 minutes of time and also energy – mine and the car’s – because I’ve been lusting after Jonathan apples and tried to go get some from the Farmers Market. No Farmers Market on Thursdays any longer. I haven’t been to the Farmers Market since November of 2019 due to COVID. I looked up the vendor online before I went. I should have looked up the Market itself. I will call the vendor later today and see if 1) they actually have Jonathans right now & 2) if they’re actually going to be on the Square this Saturday. They don’t sell Jonathans in the grocery stores any longer. The old standby Red Delicious and johnny-come-latelies like Honeycrisp and Gala are there, but not traditional “lunchbox” apples like Jonathans. grumble, grumble, grumble.

    As far as I know everybody and everything is going along as usual. For good or bad. Except the Jewish community posted yesterday afternoon that including checks both in hand and promised with the GFM, they’d made the total needed to get their synagogue back. I posted/boosted the GFM anyway before I got offline, saying to keep it going until the funds were in hand and not just promised. Healing Energy for everyone, however needed.

    Off to twitter & DK. Bright the days, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • bfitz, I feel for you about the Jonathans! In the grocery stores they no longer have Nittany, Mountaineer, Braeburn, or Lady apples (the tiny, child-sized ones). All one can buy are tasteless Honeycrisps (too watery), Galas (too sweet) Granny Smiths (okay to feed the dog for a treat), and new varieties like Jazz and Envy, about which I know nothing.

      I continue to buy Fujis but wish to drive into the country to buy real apples. I could keep them on the porch now that it’s becoming cooler.

      • I know of several places out in the county and in the next county over that have orchards, some with roadside stands. But they’re all quite a bit further out than I trust that car to get to and back. sigh. A & A Orchards have a bunch of different varieties (ripe Granny Smiths are quite nice actually – but you’ll never get a ripe one in the grocery stores) ending the season in November with Arkansas Blacks – an apple usually used for cooking because nobody realizes it’s not ripe when it gets Delicious apple red, it’s ripe when the red is so dark it’s almost black. (The Black is a very good keeping apple – not crisp by the following June but still quite edible until the new season’s fruit starts coming in.) I’ll call them in a bit. Fingers crossed and all that.

  12. Good morning, 57 and mostly cloudy outside my window today. I’ve got a Dr. appointment this morning (just a check up and labs) and then I need to do something productive. Or perhaps just make my piece with not doing much of anything :)

    Best wishes to all.

  13. Walked again, made it to 1 mile. Voice is trying to go out on me, stupid fall pollens. Yes, spending time outside when my allergies are bad isn’t going to help, but I’m afraid of the gym. Anyway, hope my voice lasts 8 more hours.

    • {{{another}}} I’m afraid of the gym, too. That’s why I got the treadmill. It’s not safe to walk in the street and the sidewalks are not well maintained in my neighborhood. Healing Energy. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Friday Meese. I turned the heat on last night – it’s 46 degrees right now – brrrrrr, going up to 75.

    Puerto Rico

  15. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 91. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We have a very hot weekend expected and then we start trending towards our more normal September temperatures – mid to upper 80s during the day, 70s overnight. Last night it was still 92 well after the sun went down. I am looking forward to being able to sleeping with windows open but that probably won’t happen until October.

    I put a few stories in tabs to read later. I hope that someone can find a law to charge DeSantis with related to his sending one of his goons to San Antonio, lying to the Venezuelan migrants there and shipping them to a city that was not expecting them and essentially telling them to fend for themselves. First, why Texas? Because he knew that cruelty to immigrants is not illegal there? Second, doesn’t he know that a fraudulently obtained liability waiver is not a liability waiver at all? Or because Florida law now says he can do anything he wants to own the libs and beef up his credentials for his presidential run? I hope some smart lawyers are working on this issue – I also hope they don’t get their case assigned to a tRump judge. After the 2020 election, where some tRump judges refused to block the certifications, there was some hope that many of them actually respected the rule of law. The rulings of Judge Cannon in Florida show that you don’t need a lot of terrible tRump judges to upend the rule of law – just one or two in selected venues.

    See all y’all later!

  16. It’s 60 heading for 87 and sunny. At least at the moment. Yesterday we generated 11.3 KWHs and the m-t-d is 156.9 – still on track for 300 at any rate. We’re heading into a short return of warmer weather with highs in the (low) 90s and overnights in the upper 60s but by next Friday it’ll be low 80s and 50s, respectively. Winter is a comin’ in. Or at least Autumn is firmly here.

    The Las Vegas NM Jewish Community GFM no longer has the ‘we made it’ note on it. I think they probably had forgotten to account for how much GFM takes in fees when they added up the checks, promises of checks, and the GFM money. Amelia’s been too fatigued to do the lab visit but she’s got an honest to goodness face to face doctor’s appointment Monday so she can do the lab stuff there. For now she needs to rest up so she can do that visit. The clinic went above and beyond to grab her the first cancellation once they’d done the first telehealth appointment with the PA. Jill’s life is still a soap opera. I haven’t heard from anybody else so I guess they’re OK. I hope.

    The orchard folks did respond to my email. Yes they have Jonathans and yes they’ll be on the Square in the same old place Saturday. They’ve missed seeing me on Saturday mornings these last few years and will be happy to have half a peck of small “lunchbox” apples bagged up and ready for me to pick up tomorrow morning. So that’s nice.

    basket send me a thread several days back on brain fog – the Disabled Community’s term for what I’ve been calling post-viral syndrome – and while I of course recognized Amelia’s symptoms I also recognized my own. Which I’m just now kind of processing. And have decided it’s a relief. It not only explains a whole lot of stuff, it also explicitly said it’s not dementia. And dementia is what I’ve been too afraid of to bring up. So I’ll continue living with this – and not exacerbate it from fear. Twitter’s good for something, right? So off I go. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  17. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! Sure, and isn’t it a grand immortal day in server farm country! (Read two Irish novels in one day and it’s curdled my brain.)

    Right now, at 11:25 EDT, it’s 69 F., going up to 80 F. The pretty weather lady on Channel 808 explained that the slight haze obscuring our beautiful blue sky and sunlight is smoke from the wildfires in Montana and Idaho—you know, those nice Midwestern states, which Diane and now David on World News Tonight refer to as “the heartland.” It’s interesting to know that the East and West Coasts are inhabited by those without hearts.

    Oh, well. On the home front, our little boy is not at ALL well! Don took him to the vet yesterday for his 3-year rabies shot. The vet said the pain is more from Monty’s neck than his teeth, and gave us stronger pain pills. Well, I regret to say that Monty has been VERY lethargic, so much so that we’re seriously worried. I’m not going to give him the stronger pain pills from now on. He was barely interested in eating this morning and Monty is one who loves his food!

    If he pops his clogs, Dearly will be devastated. Walking Monty is his only exercise and social life. Everyone in Neighborhood Two, where we live, knows Monty. I hate to think of what might happen if Dearly didn’t get out for daily walks in the fresh air and sunlight. Sigh.

    Well, that’s my news for today. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • I am sorry to hear about Monty and hope for the best – surely being doped up to control pain (if it is going to be chronic pain) is not something you would wish for him. Walking a dog is good exercise and, as you mentioned, is a great way to interact with neighbors.

      • Thanks, bfitz and Jan. Someone on a different blog told me her cat is always lethargic from 3 to 4 days after a rabies shot, won’t eat, and barely drinks. Monty will get up from bed or sofa only for food. He seems to be getting better graduall, although he still yelps in pain occasionally. This always makes me jump, for if there’s one thing I don’t like it’s sudden, loud noises.

  18. Good morning, 57 and mostly cloudy. A cool breeze is blowing in my window so it’s chilly indoors, time to close a few windows, wash the screens, and put the fans away until next year. The furnace repair is scheduled for the 27th so now I’m hoping for sun to shine in the windows so the house will feel warmer.

    My Dr ordered knee x-rays yesterday, and no surprise I have severe arthritis in both knees. We discussed treatment options but given the reality of BCH and the resulting damage to my circulation system any surgical solution is very risky. So I’ll keep hobbling along, doing the best I can. Grateful that ice, elevation and compression still give relief, boring as that may be. Best wishes to all.

  19. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 68 perfect degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The doors and windows are open and a nice breeze is bringing the cool air in – I will keep things open as long as possible. The metal railing on the deck was actually cold to the touch as I looked up at the moon overhead in the eastern sky. My weather widget promises that it will only be extremely hot for three more days.

    You just have to look at Virginia to realize how close every purplish state is to turning into a hellscape. Governor Dumbkin is shredding every decent thing that was put in place by what all of us had hoped would be a permanent blue state government. I hope the people duped by the Republicans have learned their lesson – goddess help us if they are pleased with what they have done.

    I may try to take a morning walk in the foothills to celebrate the cooling of the mornings. When the sun comes up, it will heat up quickly so I am aiming for 7am. Sunrise is 6:08am but we won’t see much light until it clears the mountains.

    See all y’all later!
