Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 18th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It was 68 when I got up, 73 at the moment, heading for 95 with heat index of 98. The last day of the heat wave. It’s supposed to be 80 tomorrow. It’s sunny today. But I did what I should have done 2 months ago – I looked at the individual panel production rather than just the system production. There are 4 panels not producing on par with the rest. One as much as 75% less than the panels on either side. I’m producing as if I had a 3.25K system, not a 4K system. We got 9.6 KWHs yesterday. We’re still on track at 206 m-t-d for 300. And I’ve got 2 phone calls and an email in with the installer. Hopefully I’ll hear back today.

    As far as I know everybody’s pretty much the same as they have been. And hanging on. Bobby’s managed to get his phone charged and is keeping in touch with Amelia via DMs. Last word was he’s safe and he found some catfood for the animals. Healing Energy for everyone, as needed.

    Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 52 and partly sunny outside my window. Yesterday I puttered around in the garden watering plants and trying to resist the urge to plant a few more winter pansies. I’ve got one pot full of burgundy pansies that I’ve tucked away where I think it will be safe from the deer, but I know the border I would love to plant will just be a buffet for them. Oh well, I’m supposed to be simplifying the garden, not bringing in more plants to tend! Best wishes to all.

  3. Thursday Meese. Am sitting here listening to thunderstorm raging outside. It should pass soon.
    I’m a big fan of Barbados PM Mia Mottley – she gave another powerful speech at the UN – addressing climate change and young people

  4. Good morning, meeses! Thursday arrives and arriving with it is the Autumnal Equinox

    It is a muggy 68 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 88. The mugginess is from the storms that moved through last night. Tucson got about a third of an inch and some areas of the western suburbs lost power during the fierce storms. We were fine. This morning the clear sky over the mountains showed a waning moon that was nearly completely supine surrounded by the stars.

    Well, it was a pretty bad day legally, for tRump. His handpicked district court judge, and his case that classified documents are his personal property, was pummeled by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. The New York Attorney General filed a civil suit charging his crime family with fraud and recommending what will be an effective shutdown of his New York businesses. My hope is that he and his spawn suffer enormous financial hardship and that they end up penniless. For what it is worth, none of his criming was a secret – the ignorant racist MAGAts, the white christian nationalists and the greedy Republican establishment, eying tax cuts and the end of regulations, decided that a literal criminal running the country was "just fine." They are equally as disgusting as he is and should be shunned and reviled for the damage they have done to our democracy and our country.

    It was refreshing to see FEMA doing press conferences from Puerto Rico about Hurricane Fiona and laying out the recovery plans. It sounds like some of the green energy money is going to be going there – people on the solar grid did not lose power. Now, we need to keep Congress so that the work we started does not get short circuited.

    My week got better as a needed repair to my abode that has been waiting to be done since mid-August was finally completed. Now I can turn to finishing up some lingering projects and planning the weekend work.

    See all y’all later!

  5. I woke up really early, dozed & woke a few times, then gave up & got up at 4:45. Got downtown and walked for ½ hour — little over a mile. Trying to stay awake now. Sigh, wish I could have been this sleepy at 3am.

  6. It’s 69 heading for 76 and sunny. The windows are open and won’t be shut again until midmorning tomorrow. We generated 10.3 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 216 is still on track for 300. The Ozark Solar guy got back with me yesterday. He said it looks like the optimizer. He’s trying to get a replacement from SolarEdge and will get back with me as soon as they get back with him. This late in the year I don’t know if it’s possible to generate enough to keep me from having to pay SWEPCO for coal-fired electricity – but we’ll try.

    I think I’ve found a source for firewood. I hope so. It will certainly be a relief to have enough wood in addition to the woodbricks I have left to not just get through the winter with evening fires but to also have heat in a days-long power outage. I haven’t had one of those for over 10 years but I’d still rather be prepared.

    Far as I know everybody’s still trucking on. Mostly. No solid wins but no devastating losses either. Healing Energy to one.

    Need to call the credit union in a bit – if my money’s where it should be, I need to move some of it to my checking account so I can pay my taxes. Meanwhile, Jan’s Equinox diary, Dee’s Caribbean diary, and twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s 76 F. and the air outside has that “just about to rain” smell. Clouds are moving slowly across the sky. Today’s high will be 80, tomorrow’s 68 F. Welcome, Mabon!

    Had the Night from Hell last night, 3 and 1/2 hours’ sleep, woke up vaguely surprised to find that Putie hadn’t nuked us during the dark hours. However, reading in the middle of the night enabled me to find out more about Ben Franklin. I’m learning things about American history I never knew. He was quite emotionally distant, mind: he enjoyed life in England so much he didn’t go home to Philadelphia for years and years. His poor wife suffered a stroke and died on Christmas Eve. It was all the same to dirtbag Benny, who was enjoying being with his “second family” in Curzon Street, London.

    I need to make some notes about the book, which I am less than HALFWAY through! I’m suffering from stomach ailments today. Yesterday it was arthritis in my right foot. Duh, always something.

    I have applied to be an election officer in Loudoun County but as the application takes 60 days to process, it’s unlikely that I’ll be working the upcoming election. Too awful if they assign me to the other side of Loudoun County! I don’t know this place at all.

    Glad to say our little boy is feeling better. He wagged his tail yesterday! He’s also eating better, yelping less, and sleeping less. Jan, it was very helpful what you said about the next time he gets a teeth cleaning (2023), to tell those eejits NOT to use such a strong anesthetic.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  8. Good morning, 59 and light clouds. Yesterday legal news re the tRump s***show gave me a rare feeling of hope that sanity may occasionally prevail in our country again. I know he isn’t gone and that millions of people still want to ride on his crazy train but it’s nice to have a few moments of hope. Best wishes to all.

  9. Good morning. Cut my walk short, my achilles is bothering me. Woke up at 3 again, this is really getting annoying. Dozed off & on for a bit then gave up. Next week we’re supposed to have lows in the 60s, so at least the morning walks will be nicer.

  10. Friday Meese. Brrrr. 46 going up to only 61 today here in Kingston. I have the heat on.

    Puerto Rico

    63% of Puerto Rico without electricity ‣ Generating 27% of total electricity

    • I was glad to see that the top of the NPR web page was a story about the power problems in Puerto Rico. Maybe the media coverage will help. I am also cynically wondering if the focus on Puerto Rico this time around is a way to punch the Biden administration for any slow response since they are expected to help. When Maria hit, no one expected tRump to help or even acknowledge it.

  11. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 68 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 86. Apparently the monsoon is not quite done with us as we had some very strong storms yesterday and we are expecting more today and tomorrow. It could also be from hurricane activity that seems to start near Baja California and head out into the Pacific Ocean. I hope to have more time to read about how the weather works here – I have been trying to learn from seeing but that is not enough.

    I got up early enough to get some projects done but got sidetracked. I need to get back to it before the world wakes up. Catching up on the news will have to wait.

    See all y’all later!

  12. It’s 61 heading for 86 and sunny at the moment. Clouds moved in yesterday and we only generated 5.3 KWHs. At 222 for the m-t-d we’re still on track for 300 but just barely. If I don’t hear from the Ozark Solar guy soon, I’ll contact him. The fact that he hasn’t gotten back to me concerns me about the availability of the optimizer.

    It didn’t get above 70 yesterday so I closed up against the chill. I’ve opened a window for the cats and will open the rest of the house later. Even without a fire it didn’t get that cold in the house yesterday. 76 in the kitchen, 70 in the hall. I just thought it did because I felt so cold. Somewhere around 2 am, when my hands finally warmed up, the shivers stopped, and I was able to convince the muscles in my legs and feet to stop spasming, I realized it wasn’t the house that was cold. It was me. Reaction to the flu shot. Then around 3 my body decided to do fever and joint aches instead. I may have gotten 3 hours of sleep altogether. Maybe. Meanwhile I’m really groggy. I don’t know if it’s the shot or lack of sleep. (I tried looking up what OTC pain relievers are best for dealing with this but while I clearly asked for after a flu shot, google gave me well over a thousand hits about not taking NSAIDs before as flu shot. sigh.)

    I hope everybody’s OK. My computer was giving me problems so I logged off a little early last night. It’s going to be a very slow day for me today. Healing Energy to everyone. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Which shot did you get, the bivalent booster, the combined booster and seasonal flu or the seasonal flu shot? I am trying to figure out the timing – I want to get the seasonal flu shot by mid-October, I won’t take the combined shot but I am not sure I have complete confidence yet in the bivalent.

  13. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! At 11:40 a.m. it’s barely morning, but then, today has got off to a very slow start.

    It’s 59 F. and gloriously sunny at this writing, with an expected daytime high of 67 F. at 5 p.m.

    Feeling better today after 8 hours’ sleep. Doing my Christmas shopping on line as I don’t feel like leaping about. Yesterday I suffered three dizzy spells as well as stomach pains. Today, after 8 hours’ sleep, I feel much better, no dizzy spells so far.

    Monty is failing, although Dearly has taken him for a walk. After I came back from taking him out after supper for a business meeting yesterday, I was crying. He looked at me so sadly out there in the courtyard, it broke my heart! Dearly has announced he will spend his life savings on taking Monty to another vet, the one who looked after Missy and Molly Beagle in Reston, Va.

    Hope all at the Pond are having a good day. Today is the first day of early voting in Virginia.

    • I am hoping Monty just needs to recover from what was ailing him now that they have him on some medication. You may see good days and bad days until he is back to normal (I know that is true with my older dog). I hope the good days soon outnumber the bad days.

      Early voting! Get that ballot booked!! I found out that Arizona passed a new law saying that the votes of people who moved to the state won’t count unless they circle back and cancel their former state’s registration. Yikes! Marc Elias’ group is fighting it because there is no federal law that says you can’t be registered in multiple states, only that you can’t vote in multiple states. I contacted the City Clerk in Madison but I have no way to be certain that they removed me from the rolls. I hope that Marc’s lawsuit wins because it is horribly unfair to rely on the competence of out-of-state election officials in order to vote in a place where I am a resident and have a valid drivers license. Arizona Republicans would love nothing better than to disqualify the people who moved here from blue states and who are changing us into a purple state. It would be awful to have our votes challenged and tossed out in a close election.

  14. Good morning, 60 and cloudy outside my window today. Rain was forecast, but that hasn’t happened so RonK is tending to the hoses because the garden is very dry. Our water is metered now so we have to be more careful with usage. Bellingham’s water source is plentiful so using water for the garden is not a problem, it’s just more expensive with the meters than it was with a flat rate.

    We enjoyed dinner in the garden last night…..nice to light the outdoor fire and candles for Autumn Equinox and to relax outdoors. Heidi left us on Summer Solstice and we brought her ashes home yesterday so being together sharing tears and memories was needed.

    I have a few errands to do today and RonK has scheduled a zoom session with some old friends this afternoon. I always enjoy catching up with their lives but I really dislike the zoom experience. Makes me nervous and annoyed and I don’t know why. Oh well, it’s just small problem to have. Best wishes to all.

    • Bittersweet to remember Heidi and to share the fond memories. I still well up with tears when I remember the sweet dog who was part of my life for 19 years even though she has been gone for over 10 years. Letting our beloved pets “go” when it is clearly time is the hardest thing yet the most loving thing we can do.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 68 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 90. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    An Arizona judge ruled that since the incompetent Arizona legislature did not repeal the 1864 abortion ban law when they put their “new” less onerous ban in effect earlier this year, the injunction against the 1864 law has been lifted and it is now in force. When Roe v Wade was decided in 1973, an injunction was put on the law but the law itself was never repealed. We are left with no exceptions for incest and rape, only the life of the pregnant person. BUT since the penalty is prison time, good luck finding a doctor willing to risk that to save someone’s life. There is expected to be an appeal but as of today, that law is in effect. Planned Parenthood had stopped providing abortions after Roe was repealed because they did not want to risk having their employees arrested and charged so it does not change much on the ground. This law is similar to the abortion ban that rolled into place in Wisconsin (an 1849 law). In my mind it is unforgivable for any blue or purple state to have committed legislative malpractice and not repealed laws like these. I guess no one expected that there would one day be a “Supreme” Court willing to take away a civil right in service to rabid anti-woman religionists. Goddess help us. I hope this ruling galvanizes those who realize how hateful the state legislature, the governor and the attorney general are – we can vote for Democrats in November and change the state and the law. The local prosecutors here have said that they will not prosecute those who provide abortions but no sane person would rely on a promise when their freedom is at stake. Five hours to San Diego, three hours to New Mexico. I hope the abortion rescue funds are ready to help women who need abortions.

    I figured out what is going on with a gnarly coding problem that I have been troubleshooting. Now I just have to figure out the best way to resolve it. I am going to try to avoid distractions this weekend and concentrate on projects so that I can roll into the last week of September (and the end of the 3rd quarter) with a reasonable chance of being up-to-date on pressing/promised projects when October arrives – one week from today!

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning. I slept in, and mostly actually slept. This afternoon I have an in-person meeting for local candidates in November’s election. I’m going to spend as little time there as I can.

  17. It’s 72 heading for 90 and cloudy. sigh. Yesterday we generated 11 KWHs and at 233 we’re still on track for 300. I sure wish that optimizer would get in. But at least I haven’t used the A/C since mid August so I’m gaining again.

    Still groggy but the groggy of overcast and Ibuprofen not lack of sleep. I actually did manage to sleep, with only 2 interruptions, from 10 until 7. Which if combined with the night before averages to 6 hours/night. LOL. The chills have stopped and the joint aches have dialed back a lot. So basically I’m as back to as normal as I get.

    Everybody was hanging on as of last night. Healing Energy for everyone. Whatever species. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  18. Good Saturday morning, Meese! Can you believe that a week from today it will be October?

    Cloudy in Ashburn when we woke up this morning and 49 F. Now it’s 54 F. and clearing a bit.

    A busy morning ahead: change the sheets, go to the barbershop, pick up groceries at the Giant, then get ready to child-tend this evening. The Dad Cab is picking me up at 4 so I can look after the three sisters. I have some new parlor games for them to try.

    Talked to my daughter, newly returned from Greece, about Monty last night. From being a Cat Person most of her life, she has turned into a total Dog Mom, with two of her own. It was she who noticed that Monty has incipient cataracts when she visited in August. Daughter has spent the last 4 or 5 years walking dogs, pet-sitting dogs at their owners’ residences, administering medications to dogs, and so on. When I described the medications and amount of dosage to her, she said it was no wonder Monty is a zombie, the complete opposite of his usual self. She said to take him off all medications for 24-36 hours and see if he begins to return to normal. We didn’t give him any meds last night and will not today.

    Beagle Boy survived the night, ate breakfast, and indicated that he wanted to go out. He’s asleep beside Dearly at the moment. I’m sure it will take 36 hours for the drugs to clear his system.

    Wish I didn’t have to think about climate change, Putie nuking us, his war on Ukraine, mistreatment of migrants, devastation in PR (although Biden said he was taking two separate actions to help the island), and so on. Life is so much simpler when one is uninformed! No, I don’t really mean that. It’s just that I feel tired.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • {{{Diana}}} – I’m glad Monty seems to be doing better. Vets really should know better than to overdrug elderly dogs. But best I can tell they mostly sold their souls to Big Pharma a couple of decades back. I’m glad your daughter knows enough to give you the advice the 2nd vet should have given. Holding the Good Thoughts & sending Healing Energy to your household. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  19. Good morning, 55 and partly sunny outside my window today. The leaves on the maple trees are starting to turn color and I needed a fleece blankie while reading outside yesterday so autumn is officially here. I’m looking forward to doing less in the garden and more in my sewing room. Best wishes to all.
