Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 18th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 72 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 59 here in Kingston NY going up to 85 and sunny.
    I love this woman

  3. Good Sunday morning, Moose Peeps! It’s sunny and 58 F. in server farm country, on its way up to 87 F. Summer will return until Thursday, which is the day of the autumn equinox, and rain will begin. Yesterday I watched yellow leaves drift to the ground and thought, “Yes, it’s here.”

    Yesterday we went to a soccer game to watch Nora’s team win, 5-1. The odd thing was that the opposing team, the black sox, played far better than her team, the blue sox, but the blues’ goalie was terrific, according to Dearly. He helped get youth soccer going in this area 52 years ago. Two of the blues were identical twins, which added to the confusion. Our girl seemed very tired and no wonder, she’d played volleyball earlier in the afternoon and won all three games. I think it’s too much for her in one day.

    We plan to cook at home today. I’ll have to trot to Trader Joe’s and buy the few things we need.

    Daughter and SIL are having the time of their lives in Greece! They’re sending back pictures that make everyone want to drop everything and travel there. Daughter is as bemused as I was 18 years ago to see the number of ownerless cats and dogs wandering around forlornly hoping that someone will adopt, or at least feed, them. Of course, it’s easy for privileged white people to criticize people who are barely surviving for ill-treating animals. Very first-world of us. The most we can do is to give some dollars for relief.

    Monty is still lethargic and hurting from his visit to the vet. So far we have been unable to get anyone to come out and clean up the mess on the hallway carpet. Monty lost bladder control when he was really ill, I poured odor-killer on it, so it’s in a terrible state. We’ll keep trying to get someone to fix it but Goddess knows when that will happen.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and hoping that Hurricane Fiona will miss PR by making a leftward turn at the last minute.

  4. Good morning. The Beto letter-writing thing was nice. I got some cooking done, but no exercise. Slept terribly — kept waking up hot, so hot I eventually had bumped the a/c down to 72, I’ve been trying to baby it till I get the new one, but I was so miserable I had to. Anyway, I’m watching the news & eating breakfast, tea is steeping and later I’ll make next week’s breakfast.
    Oh – our highs for next week: 99-100. But climate change is a hoax. Sure.

    • I always enjoy these & of course always learn something. Learn a lot actually. And there’s always something that strikes me (that usually has nothing to do with music – LOL) as, I don’t know, call it irony or life lesson or something. The family meant Lucille to be the pianist and probably would have been quite happy if Ramsey had become a minister. But Ramsey was the musical genius – and Lucille became the minister.

  5. It was 65 when I got up but 75 now heading for 93, heat index 98, and sunny at the moment. It keeps clouding up in the afternoons though – yesterday we barely generated 10 KWHs. But we did and the 177 m-t-d is still on track for 300. Only part of it’s the clouds though. The oak tree has gotten so big the shade isn’t completely off the PV system until 2 pm. When the clouds take over. sigh.

    I’ve managed all my Sunday chores. Not that the cats haven’t already started scattering fur, litter dust, and food crumbs all over the place again. I closed up the house at 8:30 and the ceiling fans are on again. Summer’s last hurrah or something. Back to wearing shorts for a week.

    I haven’t checked on anybody yet today but as of last night nothing new. Which could be and has been worse so I’ll be happy, or at least content, with it. Healing Energy to everyone. I’m off to twitter & DK. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 54 and partly sunny outside my window today. I was outside yesterday afternoon so the patio garden is watered and as tidy as it needs to be. My appointment with the possible gardening assistant was changed to Monday so I’m resisting the urge to do any more work outside. I want the garden to look interesting to her, but she also needs to see what needs to be done. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 93. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday was oppressively hot – or certainly felt that way because the morning was so cool. Today and tomorrow daytime high temperatures start dropping as we ease into Autumn. We will soon have an impressive array of birds who are leaving the northern climes to winter in Arizona (or at least pass through on their way further south). According to a Southwestern Birds book we just got, over half of the species of birds in North America live in, winter in, or visit briefly on their migration through our area.

    Goddess help Puerto Rico. At least with Fiona, there will not be a presidential visit where a sociopath tosses paper towels to displaced and desperate people. From what I understand, FEMA is already on its way. Maybe now the money to help rebuild will be used to improve the lives of the island residents.

    I am not holding my breath that the residents of South Florida will be upset enough with DeSantis to vote for Crist. One would think that his Martha’s Vineyards stunt would make Cuban Americans cringe but one would also have thought that gay men would refuse to vote for anti-gay Republicans and Black men would want nothing to do with the party of white supremacy. Yet many of them voted for tRump and will likely vote for mini-tRump. Once again, Democrats will have to rely on the women – maybe this time married white women will get their heads out of their hindends and defy their menfolk and vote to protect their bodily autonomy.

    I am up early to get some work done before things literally heat up. I work better with the windows open and natural cool air. If I have to shut down at 7am, I have too much to do in to wait until 4am to get started.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Walked again this morning. The walk app on my phone says .89 mi, but I think it’s actually more than I walked last week. Will be hot this week — they’re predicting 100 on Thursday to welcome fall. Guess the walking will stay in the early am for now.

  9. It was 70 when I got up, 72 now, heading for 94 and heat index 97, and sunny at the moment. Afternoon clouds again yesterday and unfortunately probably today too. We generated 9.8 KWHs. At least the m-t-d at 187 is still on track for 300.

    I haven’t checked on anybody yet today but as of last night they were all hanging on. Well, I heard from Bobby by way of Amelia – he texted her late afternoon (his time) that the power was out, he didn’t know when it would be back, his phone was almost out of charge, but to let everybody know he and the furbabies were OK. So he’s not in a good place, but he too is hanging on. Healing Energy to everyone.

    I’m about to close up the house then get over to twitter & Dee’s diary. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  10. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 77 somewhat muggy degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 91. Mostly sunny skies with a chance for showers this evening.

    A Texas sheriff is planning an investigation into the fraud perpetrated on Venezuelan refugees by Florida’s governor. I doubt that they will be able to do anything to the governor himself but it would be nice to arrest the pilots and fine their company out of business. Businesses and people who are thinking of enabling Republican cruelty should be made to think twice. We will never make Republicans feel shame but we can make it more difficult for them to find willing accomplices.

    I am not sure what to think about Joe Biden’s “the pandemic is over” statement. I think what he is saying is that the worst is over – certainly people who are vaccinated have a very high chance of avoiding getting very sick and dying from the disease. But people are still dying, people need to keep up with vaccinations and, in my opinion, people need to keep masking. I hope he is not saying that the number of deaths from COVID-19 (500 a day) is acceptable. I also worry that vaccinations will no longer be free and that would be a terrible thing. In any event, this feels like an unforced error – did he really have to say something so emphatic?

    I am already tired and ready for a nap! I had to get up early to get on some client’s computers before they started work. I will be glad when their clocks get back to Standard Time and the difference is one hour instead of two.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning. Decided today’s my rest day from walking, slept in. Wfh, which is great because yesterday was exhausting. Local news is talking about Puerto Rico, even if the national news isn’t.

  12. It’s 70 heading for 96, heat index 98, sunny at the moment and supposed to be all day. Yeah, right. Like yesterday when we generated 9.9 KWHs 2 days before the equinox. But the m-t-d at 196.8 is still on track for 300. Which in itself is a sad goal for a 4K system.

    Wretched sleep and strange but not unpleasant dreams when I did sleep. I cooked 5.5 lbs of pork loin chops yesterday – lunch and dinner protein for 3 weeks – which heated the kitchen up more than I meant to. And it’s still warmer than I’m happy about considering I need to close up in about half an hour. Only today and tomorrow of hot weather, then it cools down again. And I can bake.

    I haven’t checked in with anyone but as of last night Amelia was very fatigued but had done a really good doctor visit including her booster, flu shot, and knee X-ray. Jill knew Ronald had done another “stake out” in the public park across the way by how the dogs were acting but nothing she could even all the cops about. Not that they’d have paid attention anyway. And my friend Natalia is heading for PNW today with her sisters to visit relatives/deal with family business now there’s only one of her parents’ generation left. Healing Energy to everyone.

    Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 74 F. in Ashburn, sunny, with a high expected of 85 F. There is a restless little breeze blowing the yellow leaves off the trees, sometimes quickly, sometimes in slow motion.

    Poor old PR! What it’s been through! I hope our president and vice-president will mobilize quickly to help the island. At least we know Biden won’t throw paper towels at it.

    Here on the home front we are worried sick about Monty. Yesterday morning we were convinced he was dying: at noon he still had not been out for a business meeting, he wouldn’t eat and wouldn’t drink. It finally occurred to me to give him a Frostee Paws, which at least would provide moisture and protein. He ate it all, but I had to feed it to him with a spoon. His little tail wagged.

    He was still FAR from his usual self, though. He hasn’t been himself in weeks, since he came back from the Vampire Vets after that teeth cleaning. Dearly called around until he found a vet that was willing to see him right away, so he put a very reluctant dog into the car, took him to the vet, and came back alone. The vet wanted to keep him overnight. Dearly woke up at 4 this morning, unable to sleep, so he went and picked Monty up. There is a bag with three different kinds of medicine and three droppers for the liquid med.

    Between the two doctors, it’s $1,500 later and we still don’t know what’s wrong with him. His nose is warm and dry. He did eat without any enticement just now. We gave him a pain pill. He’s sleeping on the sofa. He holds his poor little head on one side when he’s standing up. We have no idea what the problem is, nor have either of the “highly trained veterinary specialists,” but we do know it doesn’t look good.

    I am beginning to talk myself into believing this is all my fault. If we hadn’t moved from that splendid house with the huge, fenced backyard full of fascinating smells, perhaps he wouldn’t be in such bad shape today. It’s so easy to be a pessimist, I’m quite an expert at it.

    Wishing all at the Pond a good day.

    • {{{Diana}}} Talk yourself out of that thought, please. He’s an old dog. Sooner rather than later something was going to give out. Holding his head to one side sounds like either a misaligned vertebra in his neck or a neurological problem to this layperson. Neither of which is prevented by having a large backyard to run around in. The former can heal itself with the pain meds giving it a chance. Although a pet chiropractor would heal it faster. But you have to find one first. The latter. . . is a “soon” signal. As it was with my Murf. But soon isn’t immediate. Healing Energy to Monty & everyone in your household. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • So sorry Monty is not feeling well Diana. Caring for older dogs is hard and yes, very expensive. Sending healing thoughts.

    • Your moving changed all of your lives but older dogs, like older people, don’t need as much room to roam. :) I noticed my dogs, as they aged, took longer and longer to recover from dental procedures, really anything that required anesthesia. My current dog took over a month to re-attain a semblance of her former self after her dentals in 2020 and 2021. For her 2022 dental, the veterinarian made a point of using a less potent form of anesthesia so that the recovery was quicker. It worked and she bounced back very quickly.

  14. Good morning, 62, partly sunny, and a cool breeze is coming in the window. Our furnace will be repaired next week and then I’ll have to close the window. But until then I’ll enjoy the chilly house and fresh air.

    I met with with Janelle yesterday and to my great relief I think she will be the garden assistant I’ve been hoping to find. We’ll work together to get the fall pruning done and the beds cleaned up, then she’ll come for a few hours every month or so for regular maintenance. It was nice to walk through the garden and to talk about the plants and share 40+ years of garden history with her.

    Our son was here yesterday too…..so good to see his mess of tools spread out again! It’s nice to have the dryer vent clean and working as it should too. Even better to see him looking healthy again. Best wishes to all.

  15. Wednesday Meese. 58 here in Kingston NY, going up to 80.

    Yesterday there were quite a few events here in NY planned for the 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Maria – however there was little or no coverage due to Fiona flooding the island.
    My phone was ringing off the hook with people sharing messages they were receiving from family and friends – all of whom are safe and all of whom had no power.

    I want to post this here – because Rep. Velasquez gets almost zero media coverage – while AOC gets tons- yet she does all the legislative heavy lifting for the island. She is very clear here – Puerto Rico is a US colony.

  16. Good morning, I slept in again because it’s just too hot. It’s not 80 at this hour like back in August, but 75 is close enough. Wondering what the NY AG’s announcement will be. Watching astronomy while I eat breakfast.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 72 extremely muggy degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 86 very muggy degrees. Cloudy right now, storms expected off and on throughout the day as the monsoon season bids a noisy farewell. Tomorrow will be the Autumnal Equinox but I think our meteorological autumn starts on October 1st when morning lows will be in the 60s and daytime highs around 86.

    Apparently Judge Dearie is not a trumper but an actual Article III judge who takes his job seriously. He would have none of the bs from TFG’s lawyers and said that there is no legal basis for TFG to have the documents which are marked classified returned to him as somehow his property. Judge Cannon can fire the Special Master (she hired him) and refuse to accept his rulings but one would think that even a full-blown MAGAt judge would pause at that. The best outcome would be for the 11th Circuit to rule in favor of the DOJ and take Cannon out of the loop entirely. Word is that DOJ is already preparing their appeal to SCOTUS where, really, anything is possible. Sometimes Keggernaugh rules in favor of the unitary executive and he could be a 5th vote to overrule Alito’s flat out MAGAt protection racket. What happens in this case is important, we need to establish that the Presidency is not something that entitles the officeholder to break the law with impunity and we need to make sure that someone whose sole reason to run for office is to give himself and his followers literal get-out-of-jail-free cards gets nowhere near the Oval Office again.

    My day yesterday was short-circuited although I did manage to get a haircut. Today will be no better as I have maintenance people coming this morning and so everything will be on hold when they show up. I have to try to get as much done as I can before they arrive.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s a beautiful morning so far in Ashburn, but it looks as if we’re going to get a teeny shower at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Our rainfall for the year is now an inch and a half under normal.

    I have some things to do, including going to the post office, which I will get to in due course. Monty is still drugged and 100 percent not his normal self. I wish I didn’t think he’s on his way out, but I fear he is.

    My horoscope says this will be a “fun day,” but so far it’s not. Well, it’s only 9:16 a.m.! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and a very bad day to DFG and his friend Putie.
