Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Jan. 15th through Jan. 21st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. 51 heading for 65 and at least sunnier than yesterday morning. (It did clear off later – I got just over 5 KWHs yesterday.) It’s Friday. I’m at work. Nothing new under the sun. I don’t have to like what’s officially starting today (and I don’t) to know what the Evil Ones are trying to implement isn’t new. But like Barbara Jordan, “My faith in the Constitution is whole; it is complete; it is total.” I believe the foundation is strong enough to stand even the bevy of madmen with axes attacking our national walls.

She went on to say, “And I am not going to sit here and be an idle spectator to the diminution, the subversion, the destruction, of the Constitution.” I am no way, shape, or form as strong a woman as Barbara Jordan, but I will do what I can – phone calls, cards, and community building – to protect what I can from those axes and get them out of the hands of the madmen. And then get rid of the madmen. It is my hope that, like El Alamein and Pearl Harbor, these are very dark days but they are the “end of the beginning” – Loving Kindness will overwhelm Hate, democracy will overwhelm fascism. We can do this. And we will.

Need to get some work done. Bright the day and wind to thy wings, Meeses. {{{{{HUGS}}}}} – and Healing Energy to the Spirit.

  2. Good morning, 40 and clear in Bellingham. The moon was shining behind a tall cedar tree when I made my coffee this morning……a reminder to me to stay aware of the power and beauty of nature.

I finally decided to witness some of today……seeing the Obama’s leave the White House, and watching HRC arrive at the inaugural is important to me. Then I’ll turn off the tv and go about my day.

    • I forgot to add this link to the Obama Foundation

“I won’t stop; in fact, I will be right there with you, as a citizen, for all my days that remain.”
—President Barack Obama, January 10, 2017

  3. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

It is 36 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 46. Rain and fog this morning and mostly cloudy skies this afternoon.

I was having a conversation with a friend about what the right level of anger should be as we begin the reality of an America where good people no longer hold any national political power. I think too much anger can consume us, and certainly anxiety is not good for our bodies, but we need to be fighting mad.

One of the first acts of the Republican Unified Government (RUG) was to have their Department of “Justice” notify the courts that they would be pulling out of the Texas voter id case. It is expected that this signals that they will refuse to enforce any voting rights laws and that the burden will fall on the ACLU and the NAACP. I hope our backup institutions are strong – we will need them to save our democracy.

For people who unfollowed @POTUS, @FLOTUS, and @VP (and some of the other White House accounts), Twitter decided you must have made a mistake and refollowed them. Actually, what I suspect happened is when they transitioned the Twitter handles, and the new potus had only 26,000 followers, they made a decision that people had been following the “office” and not the person and reloaded the follow database. I noticed the problem when I started getting Sean Freaking Spicer’s bleatings in my stream as @PressSec which I know I unfollowed. Then Twitter erupted and the extent of the change became apparent. So go back and check your unfollows from yesterday. Some people got “called out” for following the yam even though they didn’t!!

I can’t find a Democratic Party Weekly Address yet but will try to find something later. I am experimenting with logos for the new feature. I envision a kick ass donkey.

    See all y’all later!

  4. I have not only un-followed POTUS on twitter – I’ve blocked it too. Have no interest in having toxic pollution in my stream.

    • I am encouraging people to go back and make sure they Unfollow, not just Block. If you block him without unfollowing, you still show as a follower! That will make him think he is popular. I went and checked this morning and I am successfully not following. I laughed out loud to see that the potus account is retweeting the trump account and also liking the trump tweets. He will create his own reality of his worth, won’t he?

      • I’ve just posted this over at DK in the morning Village diary. I’ll carry it through the day at least. Glad I’m not on twitter at all.

  5. Good Mourning, Meese. It’s foggy and gray—46 F. now, 56 F. later. It’s pretty much going to stay this way until Wednesday, at which point it will become colder. We are supposed to have lots of rain for the next several days, which is fine. This looks like being the Winter of No Snow.

As I knew I would, I cried when I saw the chopper bearing the Obamas lifting off from the Capitol Grounds yesterday. It wasn’t that I wanted to watch the InHoguration, but Hubby did, and we were eating our pizza lunch at the time. With the departing Obamas went intelligence, grace, compassion, and dignity.

So The Awfulness has already begun. Thing’s policies will result in another major recession, so I told Dearly Beloved that we are going to have to be very careful with money. We may not travel at all this year. Yesterday the cleaners were here, which is why we were eating pizza in my husband’s office, and the woman in charge told us she greatly feared being deported. She sends money home to El Salvador to support her mother every month. I hope the deportation never happens.

    Wishing everyone a good Saturday.

  6. Slept in because my group is meeting at the park way outside town. Going to the march, then to visit my friend. I’m going to park far away & get in some walking to get there. Waiting for Joy Reid’s show — had to flip away from MSNBC, though because they are interviewing a “pro-life feminist” & my blood pressure doesn’t need that.

  7. 45 climbing to 65 and clear so far. As the Dark descended on our country yesterday, ironically I got the sunniest day of the month (8.5 KWHs) and the sunniest since pre-election November. Hope I get some good generation today before the front moves in.

Welp, we knew it was going to be bad. And it is. And we are just starting to find out how bad. But we survived it before and climbed out of that swamp back when we were just hoping there was an out of that swamp. Now we know what solid ground looks and feels like. They are shoving us back into the swamp, but they aren’t going to shove us as far back as we started – and they aren’t going to be able to keep us there. We know what solid ground feels like now. My little bits feel very inadequate when I look at the enormity of the issues – but I will do them anyway, trusting that all the good Americans Hillary said made America great are doing the same. We outnumber them. We will overwhelm them. I have to hold on to that.

    Need to get some more coffee and get over to DK. Working on my Street Prophets Sharing Saturday diary – and have found out about 2 more folks with cancer who need help. I’ve kosmailed them to see if they want to be included but haven’t heard back yet. Wonder what would happen if I suggested we “share” the gofundme site links with our congresscritters and the current WH resident? Like flood their sites with gofundmes for people who need the help these Evil Ones are denying them. Interesting thought. Bright the day and wind to thy wings, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
