Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Aug. 20th through Aug. 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 55 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. I worked in the garden yesterday pruning the overgrown salal. It was so nice to be outdoors and to finally be clipping the plants I have been studying. My garden is mostly native plants so I don’t want them to look formally pruned, just naturally shaped. The planting I was working on is a mix of salal, red twig dogwood, ferns, a hemlock tree and a very tall laurel hedge. The salal had overgrown everything so clipping it back to a height that allows the plants to mingle yet still have their own space was my goal. The physical work is hard on my creaky joints but it nourishes my tRump weary soul!

I’m going to the pool this morning and will have a quiet afternoon. Hope it’s a good day for all.

  2. I’m home. Stopped at my little hippie grocery store on the way home. Because even their “crazy busy” is still little hippie grocery store crazy busy. I have bread & almond butter and other stuff. I have dishes in the fridge that can be eaten at whatever temperature. And experience having no electricity for days. (it was a long time ago, but I bet I’ll remember what I have to; if I have to) After I eat, I’m going to move my plants all right up to my door. I don’t think we’ll lose water, but I could fill a bathtub for flushing, just in case.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 73. Possibility of some isolated showers this afternoon.

I have nothing to say, I am “said” out. This is an important reminder to people who seem to want to try to keep what just happened dry and technical:

The timing of this pardon is one of two things:
    1. After Mueller’s subpoenas, Trump wants to show him that he can charge and convict all he wants but no one will ever go to jail as long as he is president.
    2. Hurricane Harvey was getting more attention than he was.

If it is the first, that can be fixed by Congress. If it is the second, goddess help us all because the damage he can do as he lashes out is enormous.

The pardon is done – he is well within his rights. But if there are any state charges, I hope Arizona pursues them and re-charges Arpaio – and then turns blue in a show of defiance.

Fall youth sports starts today so I will be scarce on Saturdays through the end of October. I will try to get the Fighting Back posted later today but it will most likely be tomorrow.

    See all y’all later!

  4. Saturday – and don’t even know where to start on being mad
    Trans ban, the pardon, DACA,
Will sit here and pray for TX and LA instead.

  5. Good morning, Moosekind. It’s a fair, cool morning here in NoVa, with a current temp. of 60 F. Our high today will be 78 F.

Can’t think of much of anything but Hurricane Harvey and my Texas relatives. Those in Corpus Christi and Bay City are safe, either in a hotel in Austin, or with my cousin in Brenham. I have relatives all over the state, though, so I’m hoping Austin and San Antonio won’t be hit too hard. Hope you’re all right, anotherdemocrat!

Sickened as everyone else by The Pardon. Wish Mueller would hurry up.

    Have a good day, all.

  6. Good morning, 53 and clear in Bellingham. The reality of tRump’s America is overwhelming me today so I’m grateful I have a lovely garden to retreat to. Keeping a positive focus is a challenge however!

    Take care everyone.

  7. I massively overslept, which I suppose is good news. I haven’t ventured out beyond my porch, but I don’t see any wind damage. All I see is regular rain. Got the local news on, we’re supposed to get up to 15 inches of rain, and they say wind gusts later. But for now all is well.

  8. 67 and cloudy but trying to clear off. Hope so, I need all the electricity generation I can get – lights draw very little compared to the A/C, but they still draw something and I’m doing lights in the morning when I get up now and lights earlier in the evening before bedtime. Got another 20-KWH day yesterday (which may be the only 2 this month, sigh) and the m-t-d is 314.5 – it’ll take another 35 KWHs to equal the August 2014 generation with the 2.5K system.

As far as the national news and situation, I guess I have outrage fatigue or something. It’s the Vichy France situation – yes, it’s evil. no, I can’t do anything directly about it. So I’ll keep doing what I can – which aside from signing some petitions and donating my little bit to folks I think will make best use of it isn’t much – and work harder on the “loving kindness overcomes hate” part. Speaking of which, I need to get to DK and check on my various community list folks so I can update my Sharing Saturday diary before it posts this afternoon.

    Seriously holding the Good Thought for the folks in TX, kin and not, that they come through the storm safely. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Even with the storm, the top trending thing on twitter in Austin is her. That actually makes me smile. I didn’t know her, but you couldn’t live here, especially in the ‘80’s & not know of her.

  9. Checking in from Houston, self, Vonster & Master Wufei are fine and dry. Staying put. Predictions for more rain coming are worrisome but so far so good. ;)
