Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Oct. 27th through Nov. 2nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, Meesefolk; 46 when I got up this morning and a cloudy high of 59 today. It feels like their is rain in the air (which my sinuses are seconding), but so far, it’s just grey. It would be a perfect day to rake leaves, but the huge old maple in the front of my house is stubbornly hanging on to its leaves. It does this every year, and by the time the leaves drop, the daytime temps are in the low 40s. Brrrr…

I had another demoralizing day of job searching yesterday, and I think I’m learning just where my lines in the sand are. I completed an online application, uploaded my resume, and was then informed that the potential employer wanted me to take one of the online service’s assessment tests…this one their “attention to detail” test. I thought it would be straightforward, so I took it, and felt pretty good…and then I learned that I effectively got a D on the test. It temporarily plunged me into a dark place; attention to detail, as a former tech editor, has always been one of my strengths. But between the assessment and last week’s FUBAR with missing the emails, I was ready to either cry or scream. My subconscious must have been working overtime last night while I was asleep, because when I woke up this morning, I realized that really I’m just pissed. The assessment I took yesterday was less about attention to detail and more about some weird kind of problem solving that I’ve never encountered at any job I’ve ever had. I may have done poorly, but in reality, it was less a reflection on my skill set and more of a reflection that an employer had no confidence in their ability to screen applicants. I strongly suspect they just saw a test touted as the attention to detail assessment, didn’t bother to take it themselves to see if it was applicable, and took that as a way out of actually reading resumes and making determinations. Anyway, I woke up this morning far less depressed and of the opinion that if I know in advance that one of these assessments will be required, I won’t apply. If I find out after the fact but before an in-face meeting, I will only do the assessment if I’m completely enamored of the job. It may be the way things are done these days, but I see it as dehumanizing and lazy. If someone wants me to take an assessment after an initial interview, I think that’s fair. But before? I don’t know if it’s a hill I want to die on, but it’s certainly something that will give me significant pause before I rush in to do the bidding of a total stranger.

And now to write the post that I was supposed to write for today. Good day to and for all!

    • {{{DoReMI}}} – re the ability screens etc when you’re job hunting. They’re as much to do exactly what they did to you – depress you and make you feel incompetent – as they are to screen for anything. If you are depressed and feel incompetent then if they decide to hire you, they can do so at lower wages, fewer benefits, and treat you like shit on the job. Because you’ll have been manipulated into thinking you deserve it and are just lucky they hired you at all. You made a very good decision not to take them any longer. At least not before an actual interview. And then you might ask a few questions to see if it’s actually a screening program for the job or an “off the shelf” HR program they bought because it’s cheaper than having an actual trained HR person.

      Lots & lots of Healing/Helping Energy for the job search. The right one is some place – just waiting for you to find it. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • An online test is an odd way to look for workers. I would hesitate to take any kind of assessment until I met with the employer – first, I am not sure I trust what they would do with an online evaluation and would feel more comfortable if I could interact with them first and second, an evaluation like that is unfair to people who don’t take tests well and – as you said – is just a lazy way to weed out applicants. They obviously don’t want the best person, just the best test taker.

Good luck in your job search! Do you still have applications out there that are being evaluated? I seem to recall that you had a fallback job that would be “just fine” but not necessarily what you want to do.

      • I’ve sent out close to 50 applications/resumes, and to date, have only received “No, thanks” notifications from 4 jobs. But I’m also sure that a lot of places don’t bother with the “no, thanks” anymore. The fallback jobs I have in mind aren’t a sure thing, but they are the sort where I could leverage my age as an advantage, not a drawback (store clerk type jobs which have typically been held by seniors). The pay is far less than I would like, but more than unemployment, and since they’re in my village, they are within walking distance. And I’m very, very fortunate that I don’t need benefits (Hubby is retired military). At this point, except for state and county jobs, I’m unconvinced that applying by internet has any real value, but my network of working friends in this area is quite small. I’ll be reminding the few who are still here that I’m still looking, because I really think a job is more likely to happen through the grapevine than through the internet. But then, I’m an official old fart, so maybe I’m just too skeptical of the new-fangled intertubz.

  2. Good Tiu’s Day morning, Meese! This will be a drive-by as I have exactly 25 minutes to get washed and brushed for my interview. I’ve had to change the focus of the article from “Women Pioneers” (I’m the only woman here who admits to being one) to “Women Who’ve Made a Difference.” The woman I’m going to interview sounded rather cross in her email but (shrug), whatever.

Currently it’s 56 F. in Ashburn, on its way up to 67 F., and cloudy. It may rain. It may not rain. After the interview I’ll take my Kindle to the gym and do half an hour on the treadmill. Need to get my act together with watching a dumbbell vid on YouTube. It’s important to start lifting weights—so far I’ve collected 1s, 2s, 3s, 5s, and 8s.

Good news—I don’t have to pay for the table I’ll have at the bazaar! Now I need to do a stand-up flyer along the lines of, “Would you like a story with your sweet?” Old people seem to love chocolate, so I’m going to have a dish of Ghirardelli squares on my table. If Miss Pink Cheeks can get permission from Tiger Mom to come and help me, I’m sure I’ll sell every booklet.

Gotta run—wishing everyone at the Pond a good day today, and sorry about the nasty weather you’re getting!

  3. Today didn’t start well. All “first world problems” but still not well. The bra I’d planned to wear was “broken” – as in the hook was twisted. It’s fixed now – nothing a pair of needle-nose pliers couldn’t deal with – but first I had to get dressed & feed the cats. Freddy (name comes from “fraidy cat”) is/was upset about something which means he didn’t use the litter box. sigh. Three hairballs – not sure who. double sigh. So dealt with all that, put the laundry on, did the floors again (always have to do the floors before I hang out clothes indoors – the detritus accumulates so quickly with 5 cats), fixed breakfast & ate it “on the run”, got a batch of peanut butter and jelly muffins in the oven, got a fire going, and hung the clothes on their racks in front of the fire. Oh, and brought in the trash and recycling cans after the solid waste guys went through. So. Online and more or less recovering with the help of coffee and muffin. 😁😁

It’s 43 heading, maybe, for 48 in Fay., AR. Cloudy at the moment. We got some rain overnight and are expecting more this afternoon through tomorrow and maybe Thursday morning. We might or might not have sunshine for All Hallows’ Evening – but temps will just barely get out of the 40s so not good trick-or-treating weather anyway. Even if I had anything to hand out, which I don’t. We shall see what we shall see. Yesterday we got right at 4 KWHs and with today’s driblet thus far we’re at 230 for the m-t-d. The goal is still possibly but getting less likely by the minute.

I hope I can find a clip or a transcript of Kamala’s part of the forum yesterday. I’ve read her CJ plan and it’s good. I’d like to see the questions – & the reactions – of the folks who know the current system all too well.
CJ reform is aired as if it were a “Black” problem/issue. It’s a problem with all groups but especially BIPOC. & only the BIPOC candidates seem to really care as opposed to give lip service when they “helicopter in” somewhere while their plans are same ol’ same ol’ based on white mythology. As I’m trying to ally with more than one group, I’m actually paying attention to how much overlap there is in the benefits for the different groups. There are only 2 candidates who really care about #MMIW, have plans to find them/their bodies & stop the evil. There’s only 1 who’s actually already been working on that. Same 2 candidates know what ICWA is & have plan to make sure it’s complied with. Same 1 who’s already been working on that. Who is the one protesting anti-sovereignty judicial appointments in the Senate. I sometimes see one of those candidates tweeted out via the Native Twitter folks who are on my TL (I’m following about a dozen & then there are the folks they follow & RT showing up in my TL). The one who’s actually done the work is never mentioned by name & when she’s alluded to it’s as an enemy of Indigenous. sigh. Well, I’m not gonna change anybody’s minds. Kamala’s a target from a lot of different directions but she has some support from the Black and Asian communities. I wish she had more support from the Latinx and Indigenous communities. Because her programs/plans work for everybody but the further down the ladder a person or group is the better the plan works for them. She’s the only one who seems to know that it’s all about communities. That “safe” is a function of “healthy” – and healthy requires a whole host of interlocking actions, most if not all are in Kamala’s plans. Castro is good. He’s better in a few specific areas than she is. But overall, the most synergistic of programs to make thing better are hers.

    So. Need to tend the fire & then check out DoReMI’s post & twitter. More coffee I think would also be good. Healing/Helping Energy to everybody as needed and accepted, shared to your need. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good day, 39 and sunny in Bellingham. Ready or not the holidays are coming so my morning was busy planning family comings and goings. Our grand girls are dancing in a Christmas production on Dec. 21st and the tickets go on sale next week. Our extended family will all be here to share the fun so I needed to get a ticket list and hotel rooms organized this morning.

And now I need to do what ever my aching knees will allow. I know arthritis flares come and go but I’m going to grumble until this one is gone anyway!

    Best wishes to all.

  5. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 37. Cloudy this morning then snow this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow – a couple of inches of accumulation expected. Yesterday’s snow turned out to be 3 inches after I got a chance to assess it; it was all cleared by the time I headed out to run errands around mid-day. I have a travel day planned for Friday and I am hoping that the forecast is accurate and the snow will be tonight and end on Thursday.

I wanted to scream at the Twitter machine when I read about former Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy’s claim that people born in other countries – even when they come to America as 3-year olds, for crying out loud! – will always be more loyal to their birth country. Fk you with a rusty anvil, you ignorant jackass! CNN needs to be shunned for giving a microphone to these xenophobic pustules on the asscheeks of humanity. CNN is determined to put people on who will fluff up their preferred candidate, Donald Trump, and that is their prerogative – but JHC, can’t they find someone who isn’t being fed talking points from right-wing pundits – fact-free hatred of The Other pulled straight from the fever swamps of right-wing radio and Fox.

Nancy Pelosi is getting a lot of kudos for the way she is putting together the impeachment investigation resolution, making sure that chairmen are still given quite a bit of leeway in their inquiries. The right-wing claims that putting forward this resolution is an admission that the current investigation is “illegal” is frustrating to hear but, really, we can’t expect anything else. The tRump turdpolishers will do nothing but spin and lie; we just need to move forward comfortable in the knowledge that the Constitution – and increasingly public opinion – is on our side.

    See all y’all later!

  6. Good Woden’s Day, Moosekind! It’s completely cloudy here in Ashburn as daylight dawns. Right now the temperature is 58 F., going up to 65 F. later. We’re going to have evening rain, which makes me deeply thankful that today is not one of my school bus-meeting days.

Can’t imagine having snow this early, Jan! In 2011, however, we did have snowflakes on Halloween, so anything is possible here. Halloween itself is supposed to be rainy all day, with a possible break at treat-or-treating time.

Yesterday when I was giving Miss PC her tea, I noticed that Younger Son plans to hand out little packets of pretzels to the kids tomorrow night. As much as I applaud his reluctance to hand out sweets, I remember how horribly disappointed I would have been to receive pretzels instead of candy at Halloween when I was small! I actually hate pretzels so much I have taken to bringing my own snacks when I fly.

Today I have a lunch planned with Darling Niece. While in her neighborhood I’ll wash the two dog beds at the Surf-n-Suds there. I’ll also pick up some dog food at the pet store in our old neighborhood. When you’ve bought 12 sacks of the stuff, the 13th one is free.

Started waking up at 2:30 this morning, finally said hail and got up at the mildly respectable hour of 5 a.m. Of course I’ll crash right after lunch, but that’s a given. Once I get up, that’s it. I can’t get back to sleep because all the mistakes and failures of my life race through my brain, creating a boatload of guilt and regret. Ugh! Even waking up and reading the newspaper is better than that.

Feel bad for all the people who are getting laid off at this time of year. I wish employers wouldn’t bloody well do that! Christmas is coming. Oh, along those lines, anyone who has teenagers, please let me know what teenagers would like for Christmas. We do the “Toys for Tots”thing here but everyone rushes to buy dolls, trucks, and teddy bears. I always think of the teenagers who hope to get something for Christmas, but are too old for dolls.

And with that I will close, after noting that yesterday’s interview went very well. We had a really good time talking and she’s a staunch Democrat. She spoke wistfully of a future President Pelosi after Trumpence are taken down. OMG, if that were to happen you’d never get me to stop dancing!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and may your plans for the day go well.

  7. Cold (to a Texan) morning — 45 degrees. I was so going to walk this morning, I had a warm cap set out to wear & everything. But stuff happened & I didn’t. Tomorrow morning, it’s supposed to be in the (upper) 30s & I will need gloves with that hat. I am going to get a walk in this week. Glad to see people pushing back on the Katie Hill story, and standing up for Vindman. There is some hope, after all.

    But on the streets
    You can see them gathering
    And in your heart
You know they feel like you do

    Sound and pulse and volume
Hands just reaching out for hands
    This is almost overload
    I said almost overload

(that’s the 1st chorus to Empress)

  8. It’s 36-feels-like-29 in Fay., AR and cloudy. Drizzling too and expected to do so most of the day. Yesterday we didn’t get even 1.5 KWHs, the m-t-d is 231, and it is not possible to reach 250 for the month even if today were sunny. I’m hoping these overnight freezes we’re getting the next few days will convince the oak to drop her leaves. That would so help generation for November. Just reaching 200 is the goal for both November and December – and doing so requires both sunshine and a leafless oak tree.

Dee put the link to the JusticeVotes2020 forum in Black Kos yesterday. I didn’t watch all of it but I did watch the opening and Kamala’s part. As Kamala herself said about the AG’s office – they expect her to undo hundreds years of racism in four years, as they expected of Obama, and that’s not possible. But she’s got some good plans of action about where and how to start. As Hillary did, she’s got 3 tracks worth of plans: on her own without Congress, with a bare-minimum majority in Congress, with a solid blue Congress. Everybody else – including Castro who I’m very disappointed in that he didn’t attend that forum – has best-case scenario plans. Which is why even if they’re actually good plans, and most of them aren’t, I ignore them. If you can’t show me that at least some progress can be made under the conditions of a hostile Congress and an undependable Court, you’re not my candidate.

Hold the Good Thought for Amelia who’s got a doctor appt this morning & needs to scrounge up more motel money by tomorrow, for Aji who is in so very much pain it hurts to think about it & needs sales before she can see her doctor again, for Fineena who’s getting a spinal injection today and cataract surgery Monday. & of course Dee that her husband get transferred to rehab – maybe today even.

    I need to get a fire going and coffee – if Cloud ever gets off my lap. Until then I’ll read stuff on the internet. 😁😁😁 Healing/Helping Energy to everybody who needs and accepts it, shaped to their need. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good morning, Meesefolk; 41 when I got up (very, very late) and only headed to 46 today. It looks like we’re in for steady rain for the next 24-36 hours, which stinks for the trick-or-treaters. I only bought 15 bags (which may have mysteriously shrunk to 14 bags in the past few days), so at this point, I’m almost hoping the rain sticks with us.

I have to head up to Port Huron today for a session with the unemployment office folks. It’s a “re-employment and eligibility assessment” which tells me absolutely nothing. Of course, nowadays I hear “assessment” and get a bit jumpy, but I keep reminding myself that they WANT me to get a job so the state doesn’t have to keep paying out. If they have tips for improving my resume, I’m all in, although I feel like asking folks to bring in their printed resume is a bit of privilege-assuming. I’ve got my base resume printed out, but for most applications, I’ve been using my base resume+whatever I add for that particular job. Ah well, if they can give me a hand, it’s all good.

Good day to and for all!

    • There is a lot of “privilege assuming” in thinking that everyone has access to a computer much less a printer. Governments are putting so many essential things online without thinking about – or caring about – those who have no access to technology. We need to elect people who will free up money – in the states and the federal government – to give people the tools they need to be full participants in our cyber-society. It has to begin with schools – school districts need to give kids computers if they are going to require them to do school work online. And they need to provide a place and time where they can access the Internet if their families don’t have it at home. Our country desperately needs a government that cares about the needs of people again – the 111th Congress with a Democratic president, a House majority, and a filibuster-proof Senate majority, for one of the years, was too short and the distraction of cleaning up from the Bush Recession seriously limited what we could do. I don’t think we will ever have a filibuster-proof Senate again – and even the 111th Senate did not have an ideological majority – Ben Nelson and Joe LIEberman did a lot to block and water down the legislation passed by Nancy Pelosi’s House. But I hope everyone finally understands the power of the executive branch to ruin – or help – the lives of people. We can’t afford to lose the presidency again.

      • I have been pleasantly surprised at how well MI usually does at NOT assuming privileges. All of the MIWorks offices and all of the unemployment offices have banks of computers, and I did verify yesterday that access to printers is included with that. The biggest problem I see is that the locations are very few and far between. There used to be a lot more, but when MI went to phone (and now online too) reporting for unemployment, many of the offices were closed. Most of that was planned during the Engler years (1991-2003), and Granholm didn’t change it up much. Yesterday’s checkin was 70 miles round trip; I have to go to another office next week for a workshop, and while that one is only 40 miles round trip, the gas starts adding up. And I have a car and access to another income. I hate to think what people in less comfortable situations face.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 34. Snow this morning, they were predicting 1-4 inches which is quite a range so I am not sure what I will find when I assess it more closely.

Blessed Samhain! Here is Lisa Thiel and a song from her Circle of the Seasons album.

Samhain, Samhain, let the ritual begin,
We call upon our sacred ancestors to come in
Samhain, Samhain, we call upon our kin,
We call upon our dear departed loved ones to come in

The Veil between the worlds is thin
Our hearts reach cross the sea of time
To bring our loved ones in
Samhain, Samhain we honor all our kin
We honor those whove gone before
As the Great Wheel turns again

“The Great Wheel turns again.” Time to pause and reflect on the past and prepare for what’s next. This time next year, we will be 3 days from the election of 2020, one that will define who we are as a country. I am going to prepare my ancestors for the fact that I am really going to call on their help over the coming year!

I am going to go news light today – other than watching for the impeachment investigation vote I am going to put my nose to the grindstone to get my October projects done. November will begin a huge push to get promised 2019 projects done.

I was glad that the baseball team that enabled and encouraged the misogynistic pig who was angry about having to respect women’s rights to not have the crap beaten out of them, lost the World Series. I would like to think that the negative energy they drew in led to their demise but it was probably a failure to hit with runners in scoring position. :)

    See all y’all later!

    • Thanks, Jan, listening now! Thiel has a beautiful voice and I’m enjoying the lyrics. When I was Christian I loved the liturgical year of the Episcopal church, but now I am devoted to the concept of the Great Wheel. It would be nice to receive messages from my parents. Have been thinking of them almost nonstop for the past week, wishing they had lived long enough to meet their great-grandchildren.

Sorry about the snow. Yes, November is one of the busiest months of the year for women! Good luck with the projects!

  11. Blessed Samhain folks

61 and raining going up to 71

    Puerto Rico

  12. Happy Halloween! Even though we had the party at work yesterday, I’m in black & orange again today. It is just ridiculously cold: 37 degrees. Second coldest Halloween ever, coldest since 1991. Multiple layers, plus hat & gloves.

There’s a house in Austin that goes all out decorating as Diagon Alley (the shopping street from the Harry Potter books). Here’s a story about it. They started it as distraction from a cancer diagnosis, and it has grown & grown. They raise money for charities, it is so cool. Her cancer re-occurred this year, so the family (with help from friends & just people who love it) made the display even bigger, because of course they did. Story here.

  13. Happy Thor’s Day, Meese, and WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP! Our team won the World Series! Although I’m not a baseball fan many people are, and this weary city of Washington, District of Champions, needed this. Our capital city is much maligned in the media and by those who live in flyover country, but the people who live and work here are just as real and deserving of respect as any other citizens. So I’m happy this morning because everyone else is happy, and may the delirium continue.

Also happy because I went to bed early and managed to get eight hours’ sleep without any help except from lavender oil. This morning when I took Monty out at six it was already 62 F., with a soft, damp wind blowing. Today we’ll have thunderstorms and rain but the temp. will go up to 74 F. It might stop raining long enough to let little ghosts and hobgoblins go trick-or-treating.

It’ll be interesting to see what transpires on the Hill today.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and a blessed Samhain to all who celebrate it.

    • I was worried to see the tweets flying around about her campaign being in trouble. I hope it is just belt-tightening – no, she doesn’t need California staff right now, the focus needs to be on Iowa, South Carolina and Nevada (New Hampshire has no room for people of color with their favorite lefties on the ballot). I can’t believe that she is in danger of bring excluded from the December debates! These early polls do not gauge candidate interest and do a disservice to those who are still introducing themselves to the electorate. That Mayo Pete – a man with no discernible talents and who wants more justices like Anthony Freaking Kennedy! – is polling in the double digits shows how useless these polls are. If the DNC has no people of color on the stage in December’s debate, they will deserve every bit of scorn heaped on them.

      • I’m furious that she’s being pushed to the side – here’s hoping for a high placement in NV, Iowa and SC

    • The tweet I quoted yesterday is spot on and kind of goes with Ono’s theme. We can’t win with a candidate who won’t be able to do what President Obama did: “Just as Obama had to manage a Dem caucus that ranged from Bernie Sanders to Ben Nelson, the next Dem president will have to hold up a current Dem tent that ranges from AOC/Bernie to Manchin/Tester/Sinema.” Sorry, that won’t be Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren on the left, it won’t be Mayo Pete or Andrew Yang on the right – the best candidate would be Kamala Harris, in my opinion, or possibly Amy Klobuchar (although I am still irritated with her about her dig at Hillary related to Wisconsin). If Biden is the only alternative left to Sanders and Warren, he will get my vote.

  14. Happy Samhain! At 7:30 this morning it was 26-feels-like-11 so I’d say Winter’s here. It’s supposed to go up to 40 or so today and clear off before noon. Which would be nice. Yesterday we got 2 KWHs and the m-t-d is 233 – it will take a sunny day to get us over 240. This has been a cloudy year. If I truly depended on my PV system for power – was off-grid – I’d have cut the old cherry tree and the new oak tree (planted it 15 years before I knew I was ever going to be able to have a PV system) when I installed it. But I’m not dependent on my own production although I’ve produced more than I’ve used since I upgraded to the 4K system. And I’m really not into cutting trees. (My firewood has always been either deadfall or sawmill “waste”.) Especially not one I planted. Doubly especially not an oak. Brighid would not be pleased.

Much internet argument that Kamala’s not gonna make it. Even from folks who have supported Kamala since before she decided to run for president. Mostly comes down to media coverage and money. And those kind of feed each other anyway. MSM mostly erases Kamala and when it doesn’t the coverage is negative. (Just like with Hillary but Hillary already had name recognition that Kamala does not.) And the only way to fight that is to buy time which is expensive as hell and goes through resources very quickly. But then, the MSM started the campaign a year early for the exact reason of using up Dem resources. (Back to “who owns the media” & “we have to break up the R propaganda machine to make progress” I’ve been saying for years now.) On this we shall see what we shall see. Meanwhile I don’t know what the latest R evil is, I just know there is one. At the current endpoint of a long line of evils. An endpoint that has already been added to as I type. #RsGottaGo – or we will. The Allied forces of UK, France, US, USSR, China, and a whole lot of smaller countries combined together managed to stop fascism and give Germany, Italy, and Japan their countries back at the cost of 10s of millions of deaths, 100s of millions injuried, and trillions of dollars/dollar-equivalents. Who will give us our country back – at any cost – if we lose it?

Amelia’s Social Security Disability pays tomorrow so she can handle the next week at the motel by herself. Which is good because the day-long mostly wait at the doctor’s office plus the pharmacy visit (she’s got all her meds again – Yay!) took all of her energy and she wouldn’t have been able to do the FB and other social media contacts with people who might help her. Fineena said the spinal shot didn’t hurt, but the shot to deaden the area first sure did. She’s got cataract surgery Monday. And Aji had a fall yesterday that seriously bunged up her left knee (“2 long gashes, a hole, and tons of swelling”), did not-much-lesser damage to her entire left side, and destroyed her last pair of jeans. On top of everything else. Somebody (probably basket or MVgal) is gonna replace the jeans. I would if I could. My money is really tight right now – partly from last month, partly because we’re gonna take on last shot at finding/stopping the leak in my roof. I can cover my “regulars” but anything else is…

    Meanwhile since there was a (small) bed of coals in the stove I managed to get the fire going without smoking up the house. It’ll be putting out some heat in another half hour which will be nice. Probably the last day-long fire for a bit – I’m OK without one as long as the sun is shining and that’s what’s forecast over the next several days. For now, fire plus coffee plus internet are next up. Healing Energy to everybody who needs and accepts it, to their shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, 37 and partly cloudy in Bellingham. I’ve started cleaning the insides of our kitchen cupboards and yikes……it’s long overdue! I’ve kept the front edges presentable but how does so much grime get to the back? Ron is happily collecting mushrooms, making wine, and drying herbs so the basement smells earthy and wonderful. He’s not taking the “I think we need to move” muttering from me very well :) Oh well, by the time we do move I’ll be to old to clean anything so it will be someone else’s problem.

We’ll be at our son’s house for pizza, snickers and Halloween fun with the dogs and grand girls tonight. Our neighborhood used to be a Halloween destination so it was a busy night. It’s quieter now so it’s easier to just turn the lights out when we get home.

    Best wishes to all.

    • He’s not taking the “I think we need to move” muttering from me very well :)

Princesspat, I feel your pain with respect to that. I’ve put off my blog about life in a home for the aged forever, partly because Trumplestiltskin manufactures so much drama every day my diary would sink like a stone, and partly because I fear it would sound like whining.

Yet there is a conflict of feelings and attitudes. The biggest disillusionment has been the food here—so laden with fat, salt, and sugar it has sent some residents’ blood pressure and cholesterol levels soaring. If only they would let us off the meal requirement so we could cook at home! But meals are supposed to be a way of socializing with other residents, although as the topics of politics and religion are forbidden, conversation is limited to “did you move here because you have children in the area” and other such bland conversation starters. My husband especially hates the “what work did you do before you retired” topic. He worked for years as a bricklayer, not a high-up government official or a pilot or an Army general.

Perhaps after the election I’ll have time to finish writing that essay and perhaps the drama will die down sufficiently that the essay will be read. We’ll see. Meanwhile, I loved your description of what Ron’s up to in the basement!

  16. Friday Meese

47 going up to 53 here in Saugerties NY.

Hordes of Berners and AOC’ers went after Soledad OBrien for this

I’ve been following Soledad’s career since she got started, and have met her at several gatherings of black journalists.

Berner’s accusing her of being a rich privileged white woman in defense of Ocasio – are making me furious.

Ocasio’s comments on Bernie made me cringe. Ugh.

    Puerto Rico

    health update
My husband is now moved close to me, for rehab – really nice clean modern facility – caring staff. The hospital downstate “forgot’ to send his dentures – had to get a friend in the Bronx to go get them since they were not being helpful correcting the error. Sigh.

    • Bernerism is a personality cult which is why his adherents sat out 2016 and helped Donald Trump win the electoral college votes in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. They will do it again which means we need to swamp the vote in 2020. That quote by AOC is gross – I got creeped out reading it. If her “awakening” came from finding Bernie Sanders, she fails history. I hope to hell that is not the future of the Democratic Party.

Glad to hear your husband will be closer! That sure took a long time. :(

    • So glad he’s closer to you so you can be with him. Sux Boo! to the hospital downstate. Healing/Healing Energy. & {{{HUGS}}}

    • Absolutely thrilled to hear that your husband is not only closer but at a facility that sounds like it meets your approval/standards. And thank goodness for friends willing to go the extra mile, even when they shouldn’t have to.

I have no love for AOC, but the fact that Bernie is truncating her actual quote is even more bizarre to me than what she said. Per Kev:

It still grinds my grits that AOC became some sort of golden girl, when people like Rep. Jahana Hayes and Rep. Katie Porter are receiving so little attention. I personally think they’re more impressive and don’t have the baggage that AOC carries so proudly (e.g. Justice Dems).

  17. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 23 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 34. Isolated flurries this afternoon and light snow tonight. I think yesterday we got at least 4 inches and probably 5. It took two shovelings!

The House voted to approve the next phase of the impeachment inquiry including public testimony and how subpoenas will be managed. It appears to be a well thought out document and the people conducting the inquiry are solid. Of course, that won’t stop Republicans from complaining about “process” – it is such an obvious attempt to distract from the facts, the only people who will believe that spin are Fox News viewers. The witness yesterday said that there was quid pro quo but that it wasn’t illegal – which sounds suspiciously like “if the president does it, it is not a crime.” Go with that, Republicans! It was so effective the first time!!

Katie Hill, in her farewell speech, reminded everyone that there are two (confirmed) sexual harassers on the Supreme Court and one in the Oval Office. Of course, that doesn’t excuse her conduct but it does show the double standard. With our zero tolerance policy, Democrats are held to a higher standard than Republican men will ever be. I am okay with our policy – how hard can “don’t date people who work for you” be? – but it should make everyone angry that Republicans are never held accountable. I hope that Hill’s estranged husband is punished for his part in the cyber exploitation (he is a creepy looking guy, doesn’t it make you wonder what she saw in him?) – we know that the right-wing “reporters” who published the photos won’t be, they never are.

I am going to go news light again and try to stay on track for November projects.

    See all y’all later!

  18. First freeze here — 5 weeks earlier than normal. Craziness. I’m deeply bummed Katie Hill went through with her resignation. Hope she sues her ex, and every place that published the pictures. I hope she goes to work for a feminist nonprofit, we have some work to do. Today’s song: Ultraviolet, with the speech. “the great women… who stood up of sat down for their rights, who resisted, and insisted & persisted!”

    • I can’t imagine she won’t find another job, she is whip smart. I don’t know anything about her personal finances but I hope she can afford to take some time off to allow the healing process to begin. The scars will always be there but time and distance will help mitigate the pain.
