Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: April 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. It’s 50 going to 53, overcast enough I have the lights on, supposed to rain later. Not what you’d call a good day. Yesterday we got 14 KWHs & 218.8 is the m-t-d starting this morning. So we’ll get to 220 but only heaven knows how much/little more.

    I’m 22 hours post 2nd vaccination. The only thing I can definitely say is a side effect is my arm at and around the site is sore and bruised feeling. Everything else could be something I normally have anyway. Sinus issues – the headache, the grungy tummy when too much mucus hits it, the mild vertigo from pressure on my ears from the inside. That stuff.

    The mental stuff – I suppose could be side effects but I think it’s Cloud. He stopped eating again yesterday after about 10 am. We got pain meds for him. No difference. (Although I will keep giving them to him, just in case.) Isn’t drinking at all that I can tell. Ate about 1 TBSP kibble this morning after the anti-inflammatory kicked in. I’ve syringed about another TBSP diluted baby food down him – as much for the water as the food. He’s alert. Here in the room with me rather than hiding. Purrs when I pet him. & I’m going out of my freaking mind because I can’t him to eat. (Hold Good Thoughts for him. He’s such a sweet cat.)

    White America, WASP supremacy, doesn’t even have a nodding acquaintance with Justice. That’s a word they/we parrot to pretend America is not WASP supremacist/Deplorable. Whether or not George Floyd’s family will see anything even close, I don’t know. I hope so. I seriously hope the killer is put in prison so he can’t do it again.

    I’ve some stuff I need to wash, some tweets I need to boost, and a cat to tend to. So. More coffee and get to doing them. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Oh, bfitz, I am so sorry Cloud isn’t well! It sounds as if you are doing everything you can for him. Sending him love and healing white light.

      Hope your arm continues to improve. If you’re a napper, might a nap help? If not, a rest period with a cup of green tea with lemon and honey? Sending you good thoughts in the hope this day will be easier than it started out to be.

      • I am truly doing my best. & he just started drinking water on his own! That last 12 ml of very diluted baby food I syringed into him 10 minutes ago seems to have at least done that much good. Thank you for the love & healing light. He certainly can use – is using – it.

        Not a napper. I wish I was. The sinusitis means disturbed nights. sigh. But some tea a bit later sounds like a lovely idea. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 46 and sunny in Bellingham. To my great relief I just realized today is Friday, so my week has a bonus day, yay! Our son’s birthday is on Sunday so we’re cooking a family taco dinner. Last year he was recovering from Covid and this year he recovering from the 2nd vaccine shot. We’ll stay outdoors until everyone is safely vaccinated so the rain or shine umbrellas will be in place.

    I saw my Doc yesterday and with his help have a plan for managing a second Moderna shot but the clinic at his office only has Pfizer so I have to find a medical site with an opening for just one Moderna shot. Not easily done via computer so I finally called a Wa State help line and the young woman was very helpful. She knew what vaccine the various sites have, info nor available to me. Now to be patient.

    Time for coffee and as always to send my best wishes to all.

  3. There was a hailstorm north of me — hailstones the size of eggs, lots of damage. My neighborhood barely got enough rain that the plants I set out can be considered watered. Ran into the office, there’s a couple of people I’ve had trouble reaching, thought I’d try calling from here to see if that makes a difference.

  4. Saturday Meese. 38 degrees, raining, going up to 56.

    More proposed voter suppression – Ohio

  5. Puerto Rico

    #AbolishAct60 advocates describe all of these changes as “predatory” gentrification. Puerto Rico’s real estate market has been gaining momentum since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017 and displaced thousands from their homes. More than 142,000 locals fled the island in the first year after the storm, according to census bureau data. As real estate prices dropped, investors moved in, and have driven up prices again in certain areas.
    The result is that many Puerto Ricans can no longer afford to live in their own neighborhoods, including those who would like to come back home, activists say. The tax break laws are exacerbating the problem as people move to the island and snap up property. Popular areas off the east coast of the mainland like Vieques are being faced with a “tsunami of gentrification” as non-Puerto Ricans flock to the archipelago, Myrna Veda Pagan Gómez, a long-time Vieques resident, said at a 2018 United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization meeting.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 30 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Mostly sunny this morning and then clouding up later in the day.

    Now you can see why the Republicans won’t institute an assault rifle ban – it is the preferred murder weapon for butthurt white males, which is their base. I just read an excellent article in Slate from Dahlia Lithwick that lays out pretty clearly what Tucker Carlson is doing and the end-game of the voter suppression movement – demonizing (and restricting) anyone who votes for Democrats:

    The most interesting aspect of Carlson’s choice to hide behind “voting rights” in his claims about “new people” and “obedient” voters helicoptered in from the “Third World” isn’t just that it’s of a piece with the burgeoning conservative trend of stating outright that some minorities should absolutely have a harder time voting—a triple lutz perfected last week in the pages of National Review. The weird thing is that in hiding from accusations of the kinds of racism that alienate sponsors, Carlson ended up saying that his biggest problem is actually with natural-born American citizens who vote for Democrats in red states. In other words, he’s building himself a pretext sandwich: He isn’t just decrying immigration or immigrants voting; he is also decrying Americans voting so long as they are Democrats.

    The anti-vaxxers are determined to make the pandemic permanent. To answer Gym Jordan’s spittle-flecked question to Dr. Fauci “how long will this go on?” – as long as you and your ignorant anti-science followers choose to spread the virus by being unmasked and unvaccinated. Things are opening up too soon and COVID Fatigue guarantees that public health officials have no tools to fight the surges. Our “Supreme” Court told Governor Evers that he has no power to shut anything down, require masks or limit gatherings without the state legislature’s approval. And since the Wisconsin legislators are proud members of the #RepublicanDeathCult, that will never happen. Thank goodness I am in a blue county – as long as I limit my travels to blue counties and blue cities, I should be safe. I feel sad for people who can’t take the vaccine and have to wait for herd immunity to kick in before they are safe – I don’t think we will ever get there and yearly boosters will now be part of our future.

    Busy day here as I try to get caught up from two unexpected projects that inserted themselves into my week. The Dreaded End of Quarter Accounting must be done.

    See all y’all later!

  7. Good morning, all. Chilly by Texas standards — 50 degrees, high only 68. I’ll probably walk this afternoon. Right now, I’m watching the news and eating breakfast. All the cable news stations are carrying Prince Phillip’s funeral, but I’m not ready to get up and start my day. Luckily the Science Channel has astronomy shows on, so I can sit & watch until I am ready to start my day.

  8. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s a beautiful but chilly morning in Ashburn, 52 F. now, 60 F. later.

    Just about to start watching the funeral on the bedroom telly while I change the sheets. I read a tweet by Ted Lieu directed to the two batshit cray-cray Rethug Congresscritters, MTG and LB. He asked if he could join the Anglo-Saxon Caucus if he sat in the back seat, and could he eat rice and nachos while participating. I love that guy.

    Later!

    • Kevin McCarthy said that his party should not be sending out “nativist dog whistles.” His party is not using nativist dog whistles, it is using nativist bullhorns – what an ass! Adam Kinziger, the beleaguered Republican from Illinois, wants to strip committee memberships from anyone in the Anglo-Saxon White Folks Only Caucus. Good start.

  9. It’s 45 going up to 55 and overcast again today. Drizzling at the moment. We only got 5 KWHs yesterday but we did get 5 – I wasn’t sure we would, as dark as it was. And is again so far this morning. (m-t-d is 222 – we’re still on track to get over 400 for April but we won’t be much longer if these clouds don’t go away.)

    Speaking of clouds, Cloud the cat is eating again! I gave him another TBSP when he finished off the 1st 2 (normal breakfast), and another after that which he ate half of. He’s eaten as much just this morning as the whole day yesterday (day before, day before that. . .) So over the hill and picking up speed. That is such a relief.

    Almost 2 days out from my 2nd Pfizer jab and still pretty much sore/bruised-feeling arm at and around the injection site. Some of what I’m taking for sinusitis symptoms could be reactions but I doubt it. They aren’t any worse than usual. Nor is the fatigue I live with. So that part’s good.

    I don’t know what the answer is to the Evil Ones. We follow the law. They don’t. But they also, when they have the power to do so as they do at the moment in way too many states, change the law to keep themselves in power – and to kill as many of us as they can get away with. The ultimate end of fascism is that the fascists get killed – but they cause a lot of damage and kill a lot of people before then. And in the process of removing them. So far we’ve managed to short-circuit that “glorious revolution” the LW wants (enough to count our deaths as being the cost they are willing to pay) with elections. Not always free and fair, but as long as we can get enough folks to the polls and enough poll watchers, election officials, & voting rights witnesses to be sure those folks actually do vote, the ballots are counted properly, and the ballot boxes are turned over appropriately to be certified (also with witnesses) – exactly what the Rs are trying to prevent – we can keep short-circuiting them. (I wish the Deplorables weren’t so stupid as well as evil. We’re the source of their wealth. Taking us down will put most of them into the sort of poverty they scorn others for being in. They are demanding to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, too stupid to know the “leaders” will eat the goose, they’ll get the feathers – and then they’ll be required to do that work they consider beneath them to keep the powerful in power.) sigh.

    Off to do my twitter stuff. And probably need to update my computer – or at least reboot – since some of Dee’s tweets this morning aren’t showing up as tweets and I can’t boost them. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  10. Good morning, 54 and sunny in Bellingham. The week of sunshine has been good for the garden but now it’s getting dry so I wrestled with hoses yesterday. The pruning we’ve done allows more light on the beds surrounding the patios so the plants that were in deep shade will need regular watering while they adjust.

    Thanks to Covid I’ve had to re think how to use the patio spaces but it’s getting easier and I’m grateful to have the options. Best wishes to all on this sunny day.
