Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: April 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Saturday, May Day …

    It is 46 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    I had lost track of the holidays and it wasn’t until about 6pm last night that I realized that today was Beltane. Something was tugging at my brain, thinking “it seems like it has been a while since we had a pagan holiday.” It had been, we are at a quarter!! We are halfway between Equinox and Summer Solstice which seems crazy – it feels like the year just started but then I realize that the spring college semester ends in about 2 weeks. Yikes!

    See all y’all later!

  2. Puerto Rico

  3. Warm, rainy day here — this afternoon, there’s actually a 100% chance of thunderstorms for the area. I’m getting groceries delivered from Amazon — yes I know they’re evil. But neither the local grocery chain nor even Walmart (also evil) has had frozen cherries or blueberries for the past few weeks and I was tired of making do with other fruit. Definitely a “first world problem”, I know. Anyway, plan for the day: watch the news now, put away groceries later, and maybe squeeze in a walk before the rain hits.

  4. Merry May Day, Meese! It’s a beautiful but nastily cold and windy day here in Ashburn. Yesterday winds up to 70 mph knocked down trees, killing an unfortunate park ranger in a car and depriving thousands of electricity. This is the windiest spring I can ever remember although last year was bad enough. Climate change!

    Anyway, right now it’s 52 F., supposedly going up to 69 F. later, with winds up to 20 mph. I’m going to the gym as soon as I finish getting dressed.

    Celebrating 40 years of sobriety today! It hasn’t been difficult, although there were times, traveling in France or California, when I really, really wanted to try the local vintage. However, I didn’t. From time to time I read something in the media that tiresomely asserts that AA “doesn’t work.” Well, Meese, I’m here to tell you that it does. Moreover, it’s free.

    But enough about that. Today’s ambitious agenda is exercise, shopping at Trader Joe’s, and vacuuming the living room and study. We ran out of orange juice yesterday, so this morning I had to squeeze our one and a half oranges for Dearly’s morning OJ.

    I’m doing better weaning myself from sleeping pills! Haven’t taken one in a couple of weeks. Last night I had 7 hours and 15 minutes of sleep of non-druggy sleep.

    News from the outside world continues to be horrible. To escape, I want to work on my short story today. Going to work in a brief description of May Day traditions, which I hope to make amusing. We’re going to Lowe’s to get our plants, too. I’m going to hold off on the basil for a couple of weeks: she’s very sensitive to cold, but our danger of frost will be over by May 15. Basil gets so leggy if she isn’t watched closely.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Meese!

    • {{{Diana}}} Congratulations on your 40 years! 👍🎶🎉✨💕 (AA is a tool and like any tool it can be used properly or abused. The free part is very helpful for those who need that, but the tool part is what’s important for those who need it most.)

      Bright Beltane & Merry Month of May. moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • Thanks, dear bfitz! Well, I couldn’t afford megabucks for one of those 30-day rehabs, so I just went to a meeting every day for 90 days back in th 80s. The thought of having to go to a meeting every day for the rest of my life if I “slip” is what keeps me from ever drinking alcohol again.

  5. It’s 60 heading for 77 and cloudy already. Not the way I’d hoped to start the new month. Yesterday we got the highest single day since early last August at 21.3 KWHs with a total of 405.69 for April 2021. That’s a solid good and also 4th place for the 4K system generation. I don’t have May data for the original 2.5K system – I didn’t have internet at home at the time. The “meet or beat” number for May is 516 KWHs but over 475 is good and over 500 is wonderful. Last year of course with the system offline for a week while the roof was replaced got under 400 but I hope we don’t deal with anything like that again in the foreseeable future.

    Happy Beltane! Or Beltane Week. I did a minor you’d-only-know-if-you-were-in-my-head ritual yesterevening. Too warm for a fire (although it looks like I’ll have one Tuesday night so I’m gonna count that. 😁🌞😁) that I wouldn’t be jumping anyway. But the Bright Blessings of Beltane are acknowledged and appreciated. Including that while most of the cherries were destroyed by that late freeze, there seem to be just enough still alive and growing towards ripening to give me a nightly serving for the week to 10 days days they normally do ripen towards the end of the month. Gifts come in many shapes and sizes. Like the goldfinch family at my feeder this year. I haven’t seen goldfinches here for years. And the irises – tightly wrapped buds still, but they’re there. And maybe will decide to bloom this week.

    Evil Ones still being evil. Killing for fun and profit. Especially fun. Decents at the helm mean we’re managing to hold them off, do massive cleanup of their destruction, and even – maybe – make some progress. We need a bigger majority in both Houses but especially the Senate. Big enough to make the blue dogs irrelevant. I don’t know if we’ll even hang onto the majority at all but that’s what we need.

    Amelia’s still recovering from laundry Monday. That’s what MECFS does to people. From what she hasn’t said, I don’t think the person who helped her with the car is responding to texts now that Amelia’s recovered enough from that to send them. But I will ask her today and see what she says. Fineena’s got Henry home. Which may or may not be a good thing as far as the physical health of a person recovering from surgery with little or not Home Health assistance is concerned but is still a wonderful thing as far as her mental health is concerned. Jill got one more donation on her GFM as of last night when I checked. So 10 people and 13 donations. A disabled person on what passes for income as far as Disability is concerned being the end-of-life caregiver for someone with stage-4 cancer living in the back of beyond because that’s what she can afford, no electricity, water has to be trucked in, no refrigeration (among other things). Her income is too low to receive “low income” grants that would at least pay for the 2nd water tank she needs and the propane refrigerator. And 10 people, 13 donations, less than 10% of what she’s asking for (which isn’t enough), on the GFM. sigh. I’m not going to say I hate people but I certainly hate our society.

    Off to twitter to do twitter stuff. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 49 and now sunny in Bellingham. I woke up to a cloudy sky but a light breeze is blowing the clouds around. We’ll be busy today getting ready for Ryan’s birthday dinner tomorrow. It’s still a surprise to me that he’s now 20 yrs old! Oh well, I’m older too and we both still love nachos, hot fudge sundaes, and chocolate chip cookies so that’s the menu. It’s a simple menu, but with 10 people I need to be organized and pace the work so my knees don’t rebel.

    Best wishes to all on this sunny May morning.
