Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Friday moaning, Moose Peeps, and moan we will! Not about the weather—it’s perfect. On a scale of 1 to 10, yesterday was a 9.5. (I took off 5 points for the 15-miles-an-hour wind.) Today at nearly 9:45 a.m., the sky is a clear blue, we have golden September sunlight, and the present temp. is 65 F. It was 58 F. when I got up at 4:45 a.m., having been unable to go back to sleep after my 4 a.m. wakeup call.

Was too rushed yesterday to be able to record that I saw a silver slice of waning moon at 5:30 a.m. when I took Monty out to the courtyard. Today I didn’t see the moon but I did see dim stars in the clear night sky.

For those who care (seulemont moi?), our rainfall deficit is now reduced to 3 inches!

But enough of this meteorological chitchat. Yesterday my doctor told me I have osteoporosis and therefore need to take something for it. I refused to take Fosamax, so I’ve got to call up a gang of rheumatologists down the street and discuss it with them. It will be Reclast (once-a-year injection) or something like that. Also, I’m shorter than I thought, not quite 5’2″.

Here’s something to take your minds off the lousy outside world: yesterday our weekly bulletin, the Purple Paper, came out. It told about the weekly 10 a.m. interviews coming up, giving dates of September 3, September 10, and so on. It said: “September 10. Diana Read, author of Saving the World Through Sex and frequent contributor to motleymoose.net. It is our understanding that the Authors’ Festival was her idea.”

Now howinell did they know I frequent motleymoose? And why mention a novel that was three novels ago? I’d be there to talk about Magical Encounters: Short Stories with a Twist. Anyway, it doesn’t matter because the interviewer and her husband have been exposed to Covid and won’t be interviewing anyone, starting today. So there goes my chance at fame. ;)

My 4 a.m. wakeup time is starting to catch up with me, so I must go lie down for a bit. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond! And, ah, a good day to the innocent denizens of the Republic of Gilead.

    • The MotleyMoose is famous!!! I wonder if they googled you to find that out.

I always thought I was 5’2″ and at some point I mysteriously grew another 1/2 inch. Maybe my heels got taller?

      • How on earth did you manage that? I’ve heard of shoe sizes growing half an inch because arches collapse with age, but I’ve never heard of getting taller!

  2. Well, I seem to be off twitter. I guess I reported or reprimanded the wrong bluecheck. I’ve been asked to “verify” my account but it sticks at demanding a cellphone number I don’t have for a confirmation code I can’t get and for some reason when I went to twitter help and tried to report this and ask for help, I can’t submit the request. We shall see what we shall see.

    • Yikes! I assume you restarted your computer and cleared cache. Sometimes little things get stuck in cache memory and thwart your best efforts to reconnect. For years, one of my computers would put up a mean message from DailyKos whenever I opened the web site to read a story (it said I had to comply with something or other). It had to be a leftover cookie because I had not logged into it since 2012. That computer is gone now.

      • I haven’t tried restarting the computer. I’ll do that now. & try to find my saved instructions for clearing the cache. sigh.

      • Restarting didn’t help. And I can’t figure out how to clear the cache without clearing everything including my saved passwords. And the blasted twitter help form still won’t submit. sigh.

  3. Good morning, 61 and sunny in Bellingham. Lisa and Ryan are here now, and have just left with Ron and our sons for a day at Mt Baker. Heidi and I are keeping each other company for the day. We’ll stay on the main floor and in the grassy side yard so her old legs can better cope.

Sorry about the twitter problems bfitz. I use chrome and can clear my cache without losing saved passwords so I hope you can find the right buttons to click. It’s a bother to sign back into various accounts but my computers perform better when I clear the cache so I do so frequently.

Nice to hear family voices in the kitchen as they make their lunches. Best wishes to all.

    • I’m glad you’ve got family with you. That kind of support is priceless. The instructions I had saved for clearing my cache worked on my laptop but don’t work on the desktop I have now. I’ll get my son or somebody to show me how sometime soon. Healing Energy & {{{HUGS}}}

  4. OK – gave them my emergency-only cellphone number. That shouldn’t have worked because they didn’t have it on file. So they took it and added it to my file. sigh. But at least I’m back on twitter. So that’s a relief.

  5. Saturday Meese. 55 here in Kingston going up to 77 and sunny – hoping my grass will dry out today, I need to mow the lawn…my yard looks like a jungle.

    Bye Bye

  6. Puerto Rico

  7. It’s 77 – didn’t get below 75 overnight – and overcast at the moment. I opened up to air out half an hour ago and will need to close back up when I post this. sigh. But this is it for a while. Rain tonight and the overnights will be dropping back into the low 60s. We generated 12.95 KWHs yesterday, m-t-d is 37.5 – not enough to cover the A/C use so I devoutly hope I can stop using the A/C again after today.

Yesterday’s big adventure – temporarily off Twitter – was upsetting to say the least. But I’m back on now. And hopefully the next time somebody (probably a berner) reports me for “unusual activity, probably hacked” I’ll be able to deal with it better/more quickly. As with DK, they can’t report me for breaking the rules because I don’t. So they have to make something up.

Jill found an old friend of her grandparents in the neighborhood. (Well, he was a young friend of them when they were still alive.) He stepped out of his truck, eyes got big, & said “You’re Ms. Emma’s and Dutch’s granddaughter!” Apparently she hasn’t changed much since she was 10. She’s still in a very dangerous situation but the pieces are starting to come together. So that’s good. My friend here in Fay, not so much. More of her pieces seem to keep falling apart. Everybody else seems to be about the same. Getting tireder but still hanging on.

    I need to close the house. The breeze I just felt coming through the window behind me was not cool. ahem. If at all possible, stay home and safe this Labor Day weekend. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 64 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 73. Rainy today then clearing this evening.

It sounds like a Texas court put a hold on the filing of lawsuits under the new anti-abortion law. I hope people don’t see this as a good sign – they will easily find another judge to override that judge’s hold.

I am going to go news light for the weekend and focus on enjoying the fall-like weather we have here over the next few days. Pretty soon the snow will fly!

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning. Watching the news — Ali Velshi spent most of his show talking about abortion rights, mostly about Texas but also about the court system and in general. And climate change, and the insurrection. I like his show. I did get one nice big chunk of sleep last night — maybe 5 hours without waking up. No idea what I’m doing today. Maybe I’ll think of something after the caffeine kicks in.

  10. Good morning, 61 and cloudy in Bellingham. So nice to have coffee and visit with my daughter this morning. They are getting ready to leave now so the house will soon be quiet again. I’ve got some garden work I want to do and then I hope to do a few things in my sewing room. Best wishes to all.

  11. Good Saturday afternoon, Meese! It’s taken me all this time to get here. Today’s low was 61 F., and the current temp. is the high, 81 F. On a scale of 1 to 10, it’s a 10.

Small joys of the morning: Getting on the scales and discovering that despite not exercising yesterday, I’d lost a couple of ounces. Seven pounds to go! Observing the thick dew on the tomato plants and the basil this morning. Seeing a skein of geese flying in V formation overhead, honking happily that while it might be too chilly to swim, the morning was perfect for findin’ worms. Coming back to our flat to find my charming Irish neighbor had left a huge, delicious-looking peach on my ledge. It’s now ripening under glass with the other peaches. I left her some newly harvested Sungold and grape tomatoes.

I was going to make a Victoria Sponge to take to Elder Son’s house this Labor Day, but DIL is making a peach crisp so I’ll skip it. I’ll do it at some point, though.

Just took the dog for a 15-minute walkies, as Hubby didn’t feel up to it. I’d forgotten his annoying habit of stopping every few yards to demand a bit of apple or carrot before going on.

Nothing more to say except that I don’t have to go anywhere tomorrow that I know of, thank Goddess!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
