Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 12th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It’s 69 heading for 88 and overcast. Revision in the forecast shows no 90s for the 10-day. Maybe some rain. Not likely. But we get the clouds whether or not we get the water. We generated 12.5 KWHs yesterday and starts the day at 179.3 m-t-d. Probably not gonna get 12 – or even 10 – today. Sigh.

    Jill still needs a ride to ABQ on Friday so she can sign paperwork. All the folks who said they’d help are conspicuous in their lack of response now she’s asked for it. Yes, it’s a 2-1/2 drive each way. She’ll pay the gas. And her life is on the line here. It’s hard enough on her to have to leave – living up there was her dream. Her husband turned it into a nightmare. But why it was her dream is still true. The sunsets, the grandeur of the landscape, being on multiple bird migratory paths, the clear air (at least when there isn’t a wildfire upwind), the relative quiet/privacy.

    Amelia got her ballot turned in, did some grocery shopping on the way home, and rejoiced to find they’d won by the time she got home. Decency beat Deplorability in CA. Everybody’s just hanging on. But the rope they’re hanging onto is getting frayed.

    My Tractor Supply trip was frustrating. No woodbricks in, can’t order them online. The clerk was sweet and did what she knew how to do – but neither of us thought to get the manager. Which would have saved me a phone call to Customer Supply and another to the manager. Woodbricks are “in-store only” items so they can’t be ordered online. My store has them on order but that won’t show up in their computer until the woodbricks are actually on the truck heading toward them. Truck’s due 17th so probably in the computer on the 16th. Meanwhile, the manager can – and did – give me a raincheck on a pallet. So possibly Friday, probably Saturday, I’ll be making multiple trips to Tractor Supply to get them. At least they’ll load them. I’ll have to unload them and the stress of that may mean it’ll take multiple days to do this. But at least that’s in train.

    Here’s to coffee, Decency, and less frustrating days. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 56 and mostly cloudy. I can see color changes starting in the leaves of my old maple trees and the morning air is chilly so it’s time to close a few windows upstairs. We can enjoy some fresh air in the bedrooms for a while longer. I wish I could still wash the outsides of the windows as they really need it. But my time on ladders is over now and I haven’t scheduled with our window washing firm so I guess I’ll just wait for rain.
    Time for coffee and to get a few bills in the mail. We still have a mailman and a mailbox on the front porch and I still write a few checks every month. I wonder how much longer that will last? Best wishes to all.

    • I have had rural mailboxes in the last 4 houses I lived in, my first house was right in the city and I had one on my porch. For new homes in my neighborhood, they are not even doing rural mailboxes, they are doing standalone banks of mailslots in a location “convenient” to the homes. I would not find that convenient at all and would not want to have to drive to get my mail.

  3. Thursday Meese. 61 going up to 75 and rain all day here in Kingston NY.
    I know it is callow of me, but I cannot look away from the travesty that is rapper Nikki Minaj who has 22.7 million followers on Twitter

  4. Puerto Rico

  5. Good morning. Slept poorly last night, brain not working yet. Highs in the mid 90s, so it ain’t fall here yet. It might rain next week — we’re not in a drought, but it has been a few weeks, so rain would be nice.

  6. I got an email from Diana. Her laptop is in the hands of the geeks and she’s not sure when she’ll get it back. She usually can’t get here from her IPad but she’s going to periodically try. & said to say she misses us all.

    • I hope she gets her computer repaired soon! As I mentioned, I have no problem getting to the Moose from my iPad using a real browser. The problem is Safari.

  7. It’s 65 heading for 89 (heat index 90) and sunny. Yesterday we generated 12.95 KWHs and 192.26 m-t-d starts the day. We should get over 200 by tonight, 205 is possible but not likely considering what we’ve been generating lately.

    Well, I got over 7 hours of mostly not interrupted sleep but woke up with a skull-banging headache and a muscle spasm in my right foot so I’m groggy anyway. sigh. Older cats are sleeping, younger cats are playing. Jill’s situation has a path out – if she can get the transportation. Once she is out, she’ll be in a place where transportation won’t be a problem. Amelia’s cratered after her exertions Tuesday. Diana’s laptop out of commission. Other folks I haven’t heard from so hoping things are at least not getting any worse. The world and environmental situations are getting worse but there’s not much I can do about that either. Holding the Good Thoughts all around.

    Coffee and close up the house and twitter. Today as far as I know I’m not going anywhere. Tomorrow I need to get milk and we shall see what happens as far as the woodbricks are concerned. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    Quick check-in as my morning projects ran long and I need to get to an appointment. I have no weather since my weather widget crashed yesterday and I forgot to restart it. It feels a little cool but if it is like yesterday, it will get hot enough to turn the air conditioning on later this afternoon.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning, 46 and partly cloudy in Bellingham. We have days of rain forecasted so the family lunch planned for my sister may or may not happen on Sunday. I don’t think it’s wise to be inside yet so I hope we’ll have a few relatively dry hours outdoors together.

    I’ve nearly got everything I must do done so today I’ll tidy the patio plantings and make some hydrangea bouquets. The bushes are tall this year and the deer have been eating the easy to get blooms but there are plenty remaining. They are just over my head so I’ll need to stretch to clip them. Grateful to have such choices! Best wishes to all.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 64 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79. Sunny this morning then showers expected in the afternoon. Our one extremely hot day has been moved from Monday to Sunday and will feature highs in the upper 80s instead of 90s. Next week we return to more normal September temperatures, whatever “normal” means.

    I spent a news-less day yesterday as I was too busy to do more than check my email for BREAKING NEWS. To my surprise, my lack of attention to what was happening did not cause the world to end! I need to take more news breaks – news immersion is really not healthy. Today I will scan the headlines and call it a day.

    I am making good progress on clearing work. I have a large furniture donation pickup scheduled for next week and I need to tag everything so that my not-donated furniture does not get scooped up! I will need to clear out two file cabinets so that they leave empty. These guys will also take junk and I will need to have them take the big things that are clearly junk to make the final junk pick up pass easier and less expensive. I have an appointment for my seasonal over-65 flu shot so that I am protected from the ordinary viruses that can sicken me. I have no interest in the flu+COVIDbooster and it sounds like the booster may not happen anyway.

    See all y’all later!

    • Jan, just reading about your clearing/packing work make me tired! But thinking about having fewer possessions to manage makes me wish I were doing the same.

      • Some days it feels like I am being lazy to contemplate bailing out on home ownership, I am not that old. But like an old car, an old house needs more and more things done to it to keep it running smoothly and it makes no sense for me to break into my retirement nest egg to keep it maintained. I have not done anything major to upgrade it for at least 15 years and it shows – there are things that look tired and out of date. The “missing” upgrades will be paid for at the back end (by a lower sales price) which is really a win win for me (nest egg intact) and the potential buyers – who will be able to put their design style in place.

  11. Good morning. Short workday today, and then I’ll pick up groceries. The weather is getting better, I should start back to my walk/run program.

  12. Friday Meese. Another rainy day here in Kingston – 66 going up to 73.
    Still can’t get over idjits following a rapper instead of scientists.

    Puerto Rico

    The 34-year-old woman was shot and killed by the police in an eviction process in 1980.

    About 10 days ago an attempt was made to extinguish a fire in the municipal landfill of #Vieques , which remains uncontrolled. There are asthmatic patients with affected respiratory diseases.#PuertoRico

  13. Today’s supposed to be like yesterday – high 90, heat index 95 and more or less sunny. Which at least it is at the moment. Looks to be a break in the weather along about next Tuesday. Yesterday we generated 10 KWHs (at least no A/C) and we start today with 202 as the m-t-d.

    Holding Good Thoughts for everybody – goddess knows just about everybody needs them to one degree or another. Looks like some jerkwad reported the NDN Silver account for “unusual activity” – Aji hasn’t gotten it back at this point. Jill’s got some important stuff today. The litany is too long. So. Holding Good Thoughts.

    I need to go get milk. But I need coffee first. (I had enough milk for that.) So I’ll do some twitter while I’m drinking it then get gone before the day heats up. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Good morning, 53 and raining in Bellingham. While cleaning up the patios yesterday I was remembering all the college lunches we hosted when RonK was dean. I had help from WWU catering for food and service but setting tables in the garden for 35+ people was my job, and having a rain plan was nerve racking. I’m so happy we’re retired now!

    Sunday’s lunch is just family so we can easily be indoors if it’s raining. We’ve all had our shots but I still worry about covid so I hope we can be outdoors. Best wishes to all.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 50 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Another anti-mask anti-vax right-wing couple dies of COVID. It almost feels like divine retribution – something that Pat Robertson would surely attribute to his god as a form of punishment. Of course it isn’t, it is simply that science plays no favorites: if you don’t protect yourself from a deadly virus, you will sicken and often die. If the anti-vaxxers choose to ignore that the unvaccinated are 10 times more likely to die of COVID, I will choose to not give a rats ass when they die. The school board in Fort Atkinson, a town southish of here voted to make masks mandatory after a 13 year old student died of COVID. Even after the child’s death – and classroom quarantines sending students home – the debate at the school board meeting was “contentious.” Good lord, we are a stupid people.

    It is Saturday and I made it to the weekend without angering any clients by my lack of focus on their projects versus my personal projects. House Clearing Phase II is progressing well with a few “this will feel like real progress” projects nearly completed. I am feeling a little unmotivated this morning, tired from a busy and tiring day yesterday. I got my seasonal flu shot and there are no side effects that I can discern. The pharmacist at Costco is very good at giving shots and I never have the sore arm that other people have reported. Anyway, I have to put together a very short list of what I should do today so that I am not overwhelmed by the longer list.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Saturday Meese. 64 going up to 82 here in Kingston NY.
    Disgusting anti-vaxxers

  17. Puerto Rico

  18. Good morning! I went for a walk/run, since our overnight lows are now below 80, and my ankle isn’t swollen any more. 24 minutes, 1.11 mi. 4 90-second segments running, 1 at 1 minute. Not bad for having taken over a month off.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} Yay! for ankle not swollen & getting a walk/run in. moar Healing Energy moar {{{HUGS}}}

  19. It’s 65 heading for 89(heat index 95) and sunny. At least for the moment. Yesterday we generated 12 KWHs and start today at 214 m-t-d. At this rate it’ll take 3 days (including today) to reach what the 2.5K system did in 2014. (Of course the oak tree is a lot bigger now.)

    I keep seeing the good stuff Biden-Harris are doing and my tummy settles down. Then I look at Puerto Rico or the toxic pipelines being forced through on the Reservations and I’m back in knots. You can pretend you’re interested in the environment and stopping global warming, make a lot of mouth noises, but if you’re backing tar sands fuel or the pipelines to carry it anywhere, you’re just pretending. And if you’re forcing it across Native lands in violation of Treaty Rights, you’re not only not interested in dealing with climate change but all your mouth noises about Sovereignty and better relationships with the Nations is lies. And all the reports in the world about the failures of the twitler administration to act in Puerto Rico mean nothing if the current administration isn’t acting either.

    Jill came back to the place yesterday to the gory mess of another dog fight. The dogs she’s been trying for over a month to rehome, surrender to the shelter, anything to get them safely away, killed the elder dog in the house. One of the killers ran off when she got home and the coyotes got him last night. But she spent the night barricaded in her own home as the other one tried to break the door down and get at the remaining dogs. Animal Control wouldn’t come last night when she called. (“He’s not that big a dog.” Well, the dog he killed was bigger, a husky-pit mix.) This morning they’ve promised to come. We’ll see. (“Oh gee, you’ve been barricaded in your own home? That’s bad.”) The good news is the paperwork is done. The hauler is scheduled and next step is rent the Uhaul. Then she and the remaining dogs (all of the killer dogs were her husband’s he’d dumped on her & she’d done her best by) can go somewhere safe.

    Twitter won’t unlock the NDN Silver account. Apparently doesn’t have a human being in twitter support any longer to actually look at both the account and the account of the person reporting. So she’s back to using her main account for everything. Amelia got up enough energy to make homemade marinara (has to – she’s allergic to stuff in all the commercial ones – but it takes time & energy) and cook the raw chicken. For her this is a win. I haven’t heard from anybody else.

    Smoke after dark last night – sinusitis attack and close up the windows so warmer than I was happy about. Sigh. House is open now and will be for another couple of hours. Meanwhile, coffee and twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  20. Good morning, 56 and cloudy in Bellingham. Thanks to a very good conversation with my dil yesterday I’m feeling better about moving our family lunch indoors tomorrow. Learning to take the proper precautions so we can live with covid is hard, but it’s impt to do so.

    Lots of wind and rain yesterday so it’s looking even more like fall outside my window. Best wishes to all.
