Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 2nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, 40 and cloudy with mixed rain and snow. I did get my booster shot yesterday so I’ve got a sore arm this morning but the chills and body aches have stopped. Covid numbers are at an all time high here so I’ll basically stay home but it’s good to know I’m doing all I can to stay safe. Best wishes to all.

    • I had “afternoon of” tiredness and body aches but none of that the next day. The sore arm lingered for 4 days. Glad you got boosted!!

  2. Saturday Meese. It’s 5 degrees here in Kingston NY going up to 30. Had a scare yesterday – husband had to go to the ER because he had a period of complete memory loss – after a c-scan and various tests, which the ER doc said showed he didn’t have another stroke, he was sent home and now has to see a neurological specialist.

Deeply saddened by two losses – Sidney Poitier and Lani Guinier

      • I think it was to a position in the Justice Department, maybe the Civil Rights Job. The boys in the Senate despise strong women of color in that role – Vanita Gupta had an uphill battle last year to get confirmed.

  3. Puerto Rico

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 12 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 27. Flurries are in the forecast.

The Supreme Court seems poised to remove all emergency powers to fight health care crises from the federal government. They are now simply the legal arm of the #RepublicanDeathCult, trying to kill as many as possible in service to their anti-government agenda. I lay all of the death – all of it – at the feet of the berners who stayed home or voted for the Green Party in 2016. May you choke on your purity and gasp for air like the people who will be subject to Republican court rulings for the next generation.

Busy weekend. I did get a slight reprieve – I don’t have to travel today, my trip was put off until late next week. If I get time, I will put the Biden speech on January 6th up in a separate post.

    See all y’all later!

  5. Good morning. Sneezing my head off, stupid cedar pollen. Watching the news & eating breakfast. Didn’t freeze last night & no freezes in the forecast. I’ll uncover the plants later, maybe even spread them back out. Not sure what I’m going to do today. If I take a talk, I’ll wear a mask because of the high pollen count.

  6. Good Saturday morning, Meese. The frigid winter day is in full array at this hour (9:30 a.m.), and our current temperature is 24 F. As dear Jim Morrison used to say, “Girls, we will not get much higher.” Oh, well, the sun is lighting up the trees and beginning to light up the snow. Tomorrow said snow will develop a crust of ice, according to the hysterical EmergencyEmail people.

Well, hail, future Gubernator Glenn Dunkin’ will be every bit as bad as I feared. He’ll be installed next Saturday. He and his damned Lt. Gov. want us Virginians to enjoy our freedumbs from mandates. We should be free to refuse vaccines and masks. He’s going to go ahead and have a gubernatorial inauguration ball that will be a mask-optional, superspreader event. How long does it take Omikron to glom on to people? Wouldn’t it be funny if they all became too ill to govern?

The MSM continually fail to remind people that Dunkin’ (I call him that because his face is as bland as that of a plain doughnut) only won by 2 percent. That means that 48 percent of the people are against him and what he stands for. Someone on Twitter, I forget whom, said he is an empty suit propped up by filthy rich Kochs and Mercers just so Virginia could be a Rethuglican state again. Goddess help us all.

When Jennifer Boysko, our state senator, was here recently I asked her about the possibility of a Texas-style vigilante law against abortion. She said that so far the Senate is controlled by Democrats and that such a bill would never get out of the Judiciary committee. However, they’re all up for reelection this November.

I hadn’t known that Sir Sidney Poitier was originally a Bahamian. What a magnificent actor he was! I’m so glad that he came along when Hollywood was starting to be more tolerant. Poor Dorothy Dandridge committed suicide in the mid-1950s because things were so bad. I’m sorry to hear about Lani Guinier too. Her contribution to the cause of racial equality has certainly been underreported.

Well, here it is nearly 10 a.m. and I’m still in my dressing gown. We’ve been going to bed much later and getting up later, and for some mysterious reason I seem to sleep better because of that. By sleeping better I mean I only have to use lavender oil and magical sleep cream instead of sleeping pills. We’ll see how it goes.

Wishing a wonderful, worry-free day to all at the Pond!

    • I did not realize that Democrats still held the Senate! I thought that the November election was a mass extinction event for Democrats statewide and was too despondent to read any more about it. I hope that people who were duped last Fall into supporting the doughnut-faced man realize that they need a check on his power.

  7. Clouds moved in just after dark and the temps actually went up to yesterday’s high of 38 – it’s 40 right now heading for 50 and overcast. The PV system is on. But so are my lights. We generated 7 KWHs yesterday & brought the m-t-d to 39 so gained slightly. A gain we’re going to lose today – and then some. sigh.

Amelia’s recovering from the adrenaline rush of the other day. Jill’s fridge is dead and the base social worker wants to talk to her about her son. At least Jill still has the ice chests from living up on the mesa – and ice is both easier to get and half the price it is in Taos. Everybody else seems to be hanging on. Including me.

    Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good day, 33 and clouds and rain so the snow is melting away. And the air is still so the high tides and waves are not continuing the costal flooding that happened yesterday. I-5 is open again, but all the passes are closed due to avalanche danger. The power of nature is alarming at times. Humans need to pay attention.

I’ve had to lay low to let my body recover from the covid jab, but I’m restless so I think I’ll putter around in my sewing room this afternoon. It’s been awhile and thankfully the projects are just there for me, with no deadlines involved. Best wishes to all.
