Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 15th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s lovely here in Ashburn, blue skies, sunshine, wind only 6 mph. It’s supposed to cloud over at noon, however, and They allege there will be rain at 7 p.m.

    Feeling a bit tired this morning because I might have overdone it at the gym yesterday, weight-lifting. Apparently if you do it for an hour a week, it’ll help prevent Alzheimer’s. Nothing I do—treadmilling, rowing, lifting weights—seems to lower my bp or cholesterol levels. Someone has put a curse on me, I’ll bet. Can’t worry about it now.

    Busy morning ahead with a meeting with our photographer, a quick stop at the farmers’ market, and this afternoon I must get my hair done and visit the grocery store. I need chocolate for tomorrow’s meeting. The leader keeps urging me to bring some, and remarked that they missed it last time. People do like getting little treats, I’ve found. Puts them in a good mood.

    Was sifting through The Rubaiyat on line last night and now my mind is filled with stanzas drifting across like clouds. Here’s one:

    O Moon of my delight who know’st no wane
    The Moon of heaven is rising once again.
    How oft, hereafter rising, shall She look
    Through this same garden after me—in vain!

    Khayyam keenly felt the transitory nature of human life, which runs like a theme through his poems. He was not without humor, though, as this shows:

    Myself when young did eagerly frequent
    Both doctor and saint and heard great argument
    About it and about; but evermore
    Came out as in by the same door I went.

    That’s enough from me today. (What am I putting off? Oh, I know, searching through those wretched photos from the 1960s. I’d better get to it.)

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  2. It’s 70 heading for upper 80s – heat index one side or the other of 90 – and overcast. sigh. Yesterday we generated 12.69 KWHs and the m-t-d is 232.75 – sort of on track for 400 but not higher. There’s still a lot of month left. We shall see what we shall see.

    Aji got her 2nd booster yesterday and is hoping it doesn’t lay her out the way her 2nd shot did. Lisa’s still exhausted. Jill’s still living in a soap opera. I, at least, got almost 8 hours of sleep last night.

    It’s payday – I need to get some cash. Also some milk as I had the last of it with breakfast. Call the bank first to be sure my Social Security hit. Milk I can get if there’s an issue, but. . . Gonna set up on twitter first. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • I have an email transaction alert sent to me from my bank when there is a deposit for the exact amount of my SS check. Then I don’t have to log in and check that my gubmint money arrived!

  3. Good morning, 51,windy, and cloudy outside my window today. I enjoyed working in the garden yesterday, but my creaky old joints are still complaining. I’ve just about got all the pots ready for plants so I may go to the garden shop today because a few plants that I want will be sold out if I wait much longer. Best wishes to all.

  4. Thursday Meese. We were up real late here with some moon ceremonies so I have a chance this morning to check Twitter and pop in here while everyone sleeps.

    Still very disturbed about events in Buffalo.

    Puerto Rico

  5. Hi! I got in a walk this morning, yay me! I woke up 30 minutes before my alarm, not useful to go back to sleep, so I got up and got downtown super early and walked. Just 20 minutes, but better than nothing.

  6. Good Thursday morning, Meese! We were all up WAY too early (5 a.m.) because Dearly had to get ready to take our car in. He’s now waiting at the car repair shop for Enterprise Rentals to pick him up and issue a loaner car.

    Because of lack of sleep I’m sure to be as cross as two sticks today. Dearly was awakened by a MASSIVE thunderclap at midnight but the dog and I, both tired to the max, slept right through it. This morning at 5 when I took Monty out I could see it had rained and in fact a fine mist was still falling. I hastily retreated, having spent a lot of money on my hair yesterday. Right now in Ashburn it’s 59 F., going up to 84 F. later. The sun is beginning to emerge from the clouds.

    I wonder if I dare wear shorts to the meeting today? For an old bag, I still have nice legs. My Mum had them too. These are Bermuda shorts, let me hasten to add. Oh, well.

    Still have work to finish but right now, on my second cup of coffee, I feel too sleepy to do it. Perhaps I’ll be able to finish it when I wake up completely.

    That’s enough from me today, Meese. Hope everyone at the Pond will have a good day.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 66 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 93. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    I have a few stories up in tabs to read later but it looks like mostly the same news as yesterday. There will likely be no Republican Senate nominee in Pennsylvania for a while, the Republican nominee for governor in that state who ran on “never certifying an election that shows a Democrat won” is worrying people (as he should!), and the tRump coattails are fraying a bit but trumpism itself (white supremacy and wholesale destruction of democratic norms) is still very popular everywhere. One wonders how long it can survive as an electoral force without a leader especially since the Republican Party in some states appears to be pushing back. It will take more than just a few election cycles to remove the stench – I hope people don’t quickly forget which party’s incompetence killed a million Americans, plunged the world economy into chaos and encouraged a war criminal to do whatever he wanted to with Ukraine.

    I got sidetracked this morning on a project that I wanted to finish yesterday but which needed a little tweaking. I am glad I waited to dot the i’s and cross the t’s because reviewing it in the light of day revealed a few gotchas that needed further research. My best braining is definitely in the morning and with us being in the midst of a Mercury Retrograde, extra care should be taken. I may even let the project “steep” for another day.

    See all y’all later!

  8. It’s 70 heading for 87, heat index just above 90, and overcast. Drizzling off and on. Hoping it will clear off later. At least enough for the PV system to come on. Which it isn’t at the moment. Yesterday we generated 18.28 KWHs and the m-t-d is 251. We gained enough yesterday to make up for Tuesday’s slight loss of ground. We’ll see what today brings.

    Our society is a power abusing society. Whether you call it patriarchal as Diana does or colonizer culture as Aji does or something else, it’s deplorable and evil. It’s built into the very fabric and foundation. The most vulnerable, who should be helped, are seen as easy meat/targets for the abusers. And the bureaucracy looks the other way (when they aren’t perpetrating it) more times than not. Finding the good person in the mix is a crap shoot. Finding the good person who has enough power to do anything is more so. But there are good people. So we keep trying. (Rant for everybody I’m holding in my heart.)

    I was later getting up – the rain and darkness fooled my body into thinking it was still night. LOL. So I got about 7-1/2 hours of sleep. And my eyes aren’t nearly as sore as they have been. Probably helped by the rain washing the dust and pollen out of the air.

    Treadmilling is done, breakfast is eaten. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good morning, 48 and mostly cloudy. But the wind and rain has stopped so it’s a quiet morning, and will be a quiet day with laundry and general housekeeping to keep me occupied. Best wishes to all.

  10. Friday Meese – still at ceremony but am going home today – hurrah! 51 going up to 81 and thunderstorms.

    Puerto Rico

  11. Finally a bit-record hear day: merely 97. I woke up way, way before my alarm, so I got downtown even earlier and walked longer. Of course, now my body is demanding to go back to sleep. Hope the office noise helps me stay awake.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 66 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 91. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Red flag fire warning to the east and north this afternoon as winds pick up.

    The good news out of Pennsylvania is that the two Republican Senate candidates will be spending time, energy and money fighting over who won! Let’s hope that they also trash each other and make everyone hate them and the Democrat wins. In Wisconsin, a bloody Republican primary in 2012 left their eventual nominee having to defend his right-wing stands in the primary – he lost and Democrat Tammy Baldwin won the open seat (and was re-elected in 2018).

    Holy sheet – Oklahoma passes a zygote personhood bill, announcing that a fertilized egg is a human and cannot be legally destroyed. The IVF people are going to be unhappy with this – John Roberts’ two children are IVF but hey, he got his, screw everyone else! I feel sad for women stuck in the Gilead states who can’t relocate – what a horrible mess they are in – when they ban contraceptives their wombs will be state property.

    Can’t stay, I am connected to some client computers and need to finish and send off some emails.

    See all y’all later!

  13. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! it was dark when I woke up at 2:15, naturally, but I didn’t stop pretending to sleep until 5 a.m. I didn’t take a sleeping pill last night, which was why I woke up and could not go back to sleep, even though I lay in the dark with my eyes closed. Sheet.

    It’s 71 F. in Ashburn at the moment. The dark clouds of dawn have given way to a fairish day with milky blue skies and weak sunlight. It’s supposed to get up to 93 F. this afternoon, so I took Monty out shortly after 7;30 a.m. for a half-hour walkies. A tired dog is a happy dog, they say. I saw many other residents walking either themselves or their dogs to avoid the heat later on.

    Dearly is going to drive me to the dentist because I’m nervous about driving a loaner car. We’re going to drop Monty off at Doggy Play Care on the way. The dental stuff is going to require DRUGS because it will be quite painful, so I’m not looking forward to it. Probably I won’t get another thing done the rest of the day.

    I am so happy to be nearly finished with the two stories I’m required to produce. After I turn them in next week, I can get on with what I want to write.

    Must get ready, the clock is ticking and we have to leave no later than 10, preferably earlier.

    Wishing a good, noneventful Friday to all at the Pond.

  14. Pretty much like yesterday except not overcast. And yesterday’s overcast burned off fairly quickly. We generated 18.27 KWHs and brought the m-t-d to 269. Gained a bit of ground, which is nice. While 500 for the month is technically possible, I’ll be content with 400. The latter is not guaranteed even at this point.

    I’ve finished my treadmilling and am trying to eat my breakfast. Being interrupted by Murf about every 3rd bite because he wants me to hold the water dish under his nose. sigh. I’ll need to close the house up soon. But there’s a cool breeze blowing and I want to take advantage of it. I haven’t checked on anybody yet. As of last night Aji’s in more pain and is more depressed/angry than ever, Jill’s lost another very dear friend (to COVID, she was doing fine recovering from the breast cancer) while her “dying man” husband keeps harassing her, and Amelia is avoiding all the news and immersing herself in a Downton Abbey marathon.

    So. I got over 6 hours of sleep and am doing reasonably well. Better than practically anybody I know. Which sometimes I feel guilty about as well as grateful. And totally wish I could share my blessings. Meanwhile, off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, 45 and sunny outside my window this morning. So nice to see blue sky! I’ve got a planting plan on paper so I’m organized and ready to buy some flowers and plant them today. Having a plan keeps me focused, but I do try to wander around see new plants as well. It’s a balance between being creative and staying careful re stressing my old knees. Best wishes to all.

  16. Saturday Meese. 61 and foggy here in Kingston NY, going up to 95.
    Still trying to deal with people making excuses for the Buffalo terrorist – from economic anxiety to a toothache.

    Puerto Rico

  17. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 70 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 91 (feels like 86). Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Wow! Republican Senator from Louisiana says the quiet parts out loud – maternal mortality is not that bad in his state if you ignore the Black mothers dying. That is really the nut of it – only white lives matter to Republicans and any policies – or funding – that might be needed to protect the lives of Black women are unnecessary. Fk them all with a rusty boat anchor. When will the Archbishops deny communion to white supremacist politicians whose actions kill innocent people?

    I have a project that needs to be completed and which I can’t ignore any longer. I am going to put everything else on hold for 3 hours and just finish.

    See all y’all later!

  18. It’s 59 heading for 70 and raining. For most if not all the day apparently. The clouds all day and for the next several according to the widget. Temps shifted down to get with the clouds. Overnights in the 50s, highs in the 70s. And probably diddly electricity generation. sigh. But yesterday we got 18.29 KWHs and the m-t-d is 287.55 – how long to get to 300, who knows? If the sun were out we’d do it by mid afternoon. Since it’s so dark the PV system isn’t even on. . .

    I’m in the middle of my treadmilling. As in I’ve done one 10-minute session and need to catch my breath. Water for Murf, water for me, and I’ll get back to it. I haven’t checked on anybody anywhere but as of last night everything’s pretty much the same. As in not good but hanging on.

    Once I finish treadmilling, I’ll make my own breakfast and start the cookies, then get over to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  19. Good morning. I slept in — woke up several times but kept turning over & dozing off again. Had a weird dream about the maintenance/construction thing at my current place, but I was at my old apartment. Like I said, weird. Anyway, we’re supposed to get thunderstorms overnight and then blessed cool tomorrow. A high of only 80. Brrrr.
