Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 5th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good soggy Saturday, Meese. It’s raining lightly, not that I mind at all. We are almost at our normal level of rainfall for this time of year. I don’t know why Virginia is so much drier than DC and Maryland.

This morning Dearly is going to drive me to a doc-in-the-box so I can get SOMEONE to tell me what to do about my ear, other than sticking a cotton ball in it. (“Stick it in your ear” has suddenly taken on a whole new meaning.) Anyway, I’m not hearing as well with only one hearing aid, which is very awkward. The nasty antibiotic continues to taste nasty and produce nasty side effects. So far I have noticed zero improvement in my situation.

Today there’s a march against gun violence in this neck of the woods. I’m too preoccupied with my own situation to attend. Besides, who knows that the marchers won’t all be dispatched by random gunfire from some guy too ugly to get a date? That is my standard explanation for gun violence from incels. Why does no one pay attention? How is it that plain 18-year-old WOMEN don’t get AR-15’s and dispatch random others? It’s because they’re too busy trying to make themselves attractive. There is a whole industry devoted to telling us we are not acceptable as we are: if too short, we must wear high heels; if not the accepted weight, we must lose our pounds; if not pretty enough, heaps of makeup, hair dye, plastic surgery, or whathaveyou.

Oh, well, enough of that. I have the new crown. It’s a bit tender in the spot where they installed it. I’ll be glad to get home after we see the doc. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I am extremely dissatisfied with United Health Care. Why don’t they have Urgent Care?

That’s enough whining from me. Wishing everyone a nice, peaceful day at the Pond.

    • I am not even sure it is that incels are too ugly to get a date; I think they are so stuck on themselves – and feel so entitled – that most woman would not want to be around them. Their problem is a shortage of self-loathing women who don’t mind being treated like crap!

I am also finding the health care – and dental care – system a bit daunting these days. They don’t make it easy to navigate through it. I often wonder how older people who are not computer-savvy and who have no family manage.

  2. Saturday Meese. 54 and sunny here in Kingston going up to 78. Diana, we’re getting your soggy tomorrow.

I’m going to keep pushing back on the Cheney love on twitter, as are many other Black Twitter accounts

  3. Puerto Rico

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 82 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 104. Sunny skies are in the forecast. There were dark skies and lightning behind the mountains to the east – I hope it included rain as lightning all by itself is a bad thing with everything this dry.

Gas prices are at an all time high. Surprise, NOT. Anyone who has more than two brain cells knows that this was inevitable. Russia’s war on Ukraine made the moment come sooner but the West’s guzzling of fossil fuel was always going to come up against the reality that it is a finite resource and is controlled by some of the worst people on Earth. The Saudi Princes and Putin both know that they can do anything they want because in the end America will bow to their one true god – ginormous trucks to “wave” in front of people to show their manliness. It sucks for families on a fixed (and dwindling) income if they need to get to work in their cars and it sucks for all of us who depend on the transportation of goods to our grocery stores but the one thing it is not is a surprise. The people who voted to go backwards for 4 years in our battle to save the planet – including the berners and the so-called “Green Party” – own this. Sadly they won’t be the only ones suffering.

I am going to save off a few articles in Pocket to read later but I have to avoid getting distracted by the Internets this morning. I am finding that I have about a 4 hour window of usefulness in the morning and I need to spend it doing the things that are essential. This morning it is accounting.

    See all y’all later!

  5. Good morning. Didn’t walk — I actually slept till 7! Well, I woke up a few times but not that super-annoying 4:30 wide-awake thing. Watching the news, doing laundry. Later today I’ll cook lunch for the next couple of weeks. Heat advisory for the whole state, supposed to get up to 105 this afternoon. Half of the local news/weather is: drink water, get inside if you start feeling bad.

  6. It’s already 71 and I need to close up the house. But it’s sunny! Yesterday we generated 16.7 KWHs so almost breakeven for the day and only lost a tiny bit more ground. The m-t-d is 139.75 and hopefully we’ll gain a bit of ground today.

It’s Amelia’s birthday. With her pain and situation she feels sad rather than celebratory. I wish. . . Jill’s husband found a sleezy woman who apparently has her own niche in the gig economy – helping abusers lure their victims out of hidden/safe places to verify their locations. At best. Which isn’t very “best”. Fortunately Jill didn’t fall into the trap. The fire west of Aji was still at zero containment as of last night. & she’s still having to push out her next pain treatment for lack of funds.

I’m still testing negative and my O2 and pulse are where they should be. I’ve 3 more tests but that should be enough to tell whether or not I got COVID from basket’s visit. I guess it’s good I kept the tests. I’d meant to send them to either Aji or Amelia since they’re both more vulnerable than I am. My regular piddly health issues – sinusitis, headache, hands, etc – are still with me, of course. And still piddly.

    I need to do laundry today. But first off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 55 and mostly cloudy outside my window today. I had an early haircut appointment yesterday morning and to my relief the (very) young stylist did a good job so now I can relax and hope she stays at the salon for a while. I had hoped to be in the garden in the afternoon but the rain was very wet so I stayed indoors. I’ll try again today.
I talked to our son last evening and his voice is finally sounding more normal, whew. Now the fatigue needs to ease so his stamina can return. Being self employed and sick is very worrisome for him as well as for me.

Time for coffee and to get myself to the garden shop for some plants that love cold wet soil :) Best wishes to all.
