Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 19th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Morning, meeses. Saturday …

It is 75 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies, clouding up with a chance of rain this evening. Light feathery clouds are over the mountains right now.

I have no words to describe how I feel after SCOTUS repealed federal protections for a fundamental human right and turned it over to the states. Already a half dozen states have declared themselves Ready to Allow Women To Die and are giddy about the prospect of the next steps – finding court cases they can take to SCOTUS to repeal Lawrence, Loving, Griswold, and Obergefell. Heck, why stop there! That pesky 19th Amendment, that terrible “freeing of the slaves”, the encroachment of Brown v Board of Education on the right to keep their children away from The Other. It will be interesting to see what SCOTUS does with religious freedom cases when the religious freedom is for Jewish people to continue to have access to abortion. All eyes are on that Florida case.

This year’s statewide elections are a big deal; in Arizona, the candidate for Attorney General said she would not prosecute abortion providers – she said that the Arizona Constitution does have a right to privacy written in (not just imputed as it was in the U.S. Constitution which led to Roe) and she will honor that. In a lot of other states, women – and men who realize that they have also lost the right to plan their family size – will have a chance to vote to restore their rights. We need three new Senators to dilute the Sinemanchin votes and kill the filibuster to pass a law guaranteeing a federal right to abortion. Then we just need to freaking VOTE LIKE REPUBLICANS and vote in every election to keep the destroyers from regaining power.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good Saturday morning, Meese. It’s a beautiful day here in old Ashburn, 70 F. going up to 90 F., blue skies and so forth. Had a delightful surprise—I put on a pair of size 12 shorts, not expecting them to fit, but behold—they did fit. That’s because they’re Gloria Vanderbilts, who always thoughtfully includes a little Spandex to account for burgeoning elders.

Must do lots of housework before my nail appointment at 11. Must do lots of writing this afternoon, including my obituary. I have some peaches, ripening under a glass bowl. This afternoon I’ll either make Peach Ice Cream or Peach Cobbler with them.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, with healing to princesspat’s son and lots of sunlight for bfitz.

  3. My friend Laurie in Mississippi posted this – hope to give her a boost

  4. Good morning. Well, this is terrible. I thought there might be a protest at the Capitol yesterday, so I walked over after work; but it was at the Federal courthouse instead. There’s another one on Sunday with Beto. I might go, but it’ll be 105 so maybe not. I’m glad that Thomas said the quiet part out loud — they are coming for contraception, gay marriage….hell, they’re coming for GLBTQ existence.

    • The right-wing kept expecting violence from protesters and hoped they could show it on their newscasts. The only violence I saw was a guy in Cedar Rapids who drove his truck through anti-SCOTUS protesters and sent at least one to the hospital. The idiot had a vanity Iowa football license plate, easily memorized – what a maroon.

I think people realize that rallies and protests are not going to be enough. Democrats need to mobilize to GOTV for every election not just the presidential election; I am hoping that enough people care that a fundamental human right has been taken away and that this will propel them to the polls.

  5. Yesterday was the punch we knew was coming. I hope that along with all the loud “Just vote” (which yes, we should do) messages and all the fundraising being done off it by people who aren’t doing/can’t do a thing about it there’s a lot of quiet organizing. First to help people who need it right now and second to get pro-reproductive healthcare Dems elected at the state and local levels. That’s what we can do now. It’s all we can do now.

The heat index never got below 80 so I didn’t open the house. And probably won’t until tomorrow morning. It’s 81 now heading for 98/heat index 104 – except our temps and heat index have been running 5 or more degrees higher than the forecast lately so. . . But we’ve got that cool spell starting tomorrow to look forward to. Yesterday we generated 19.79 KWHs and the m-t-d is 407.79 – on track for getting ahead of June 2021 at least/last. IF we continue getting 18+ KWHs per day we’ll make it.

    Everybody’s upset enough about Roe they really aren’t talking about anything else. So at least their own problems aren’t loud enough to drown the national ones right now. Off to twitter to set up. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning. We had a big, loud thunderstorm last night — over an inch of rain. So lovely. Possibly more today. Wfh today, so I get to watch the hearing.
