Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 14th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 74 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 96. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast with possible rain around 11am.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. Woke up to temp of 54 (brrr)- here in Kingston, only going up to 85 today with no humidity. Lovely weather.
    Puerto Rico

One of the more than 600 schools that have closed in Puerto Rico is now a Save a Sato shelter. The classrooms are FULL of animals rescued from the streets or left behind. It is a situation that is repeated around the entire island. It is urgent to attend to this

  3. Good morning. Watching the news while my tea steeps. Got a lot of housework done yesterday. Today it’s just the tea and my overnight oats. Glad to hear that Salman Rushdie is recovering.

  4. It’s 75 and I just closed up the house – it’s been open since 10:30 last night. Sunny at the moment. We’re getting partly cloudy afternoons that are mucking up the possible electricity generation lately and probably today too. sigh. Yesterday we generated 13 KWHs. The m-t-d is still on track for 450 at 196.5 but just barely. And even if it manages to stay on track for the next few days it probably won’t be after Wednesday. But Wednesday’s bringing a cool spell and hopefully some rain. So that part’s good.

I’ve finished my Sunday cleaning chores and my hands are not happy with me. We’ll see if I manage to get all my twitter boosting done today, much less any FreeCell games in. LOL. Sort of.

Jill’s stalker/harasser called 911 last night and reported Jill as being a danger to herself and others. EMT and cops all over the place. Fortunately one of the cops on duty knows Jill’s story and settled everybody down. EMTs were totally pissed, as they should be, but harasser used one of those magic disappearing phone numbers so they can’t legally trace it back to the person everybody involved knows who did it. That’s the drama for my group. I hope. As far as I know. Holding Good Thoughts for everybody anyway.

    I’m off to twitter & Dee’s diary. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moose Peeps! It’s another lovely day in Ash-be-bugged, with a current temp. of 79 F. Our high will be 84 F. When Dearly returns from walking Monty, we will have our elevenses on the screened porch.

Yesterday was a perfect day in Northern Virginia. We went over to Elder Son’s house to have dinner with him, daughter-in-law, and little Ethan. We had a Zoom call with the family in Kent—Sweet Niece, Excellent Nephew (who took days off from his work, bought a minivan, and is now driving Younger Son and family around the south of England), and Younger Son and DIL. I brought the birthday cake for Dearly, on which we carefully arranged a “9” candle and a “2” candle, and lit them. Elder Son prepared a really nice meal of grilled chicken and corn, marinated tomatoes, onion, and cucumber, and a slightly spicy sausage.

It’s so great to have a family! Dearly enjoyed his birthday. Imagine being 92. It’s not terribly comfy, mind, there are lots of aches and pains, but on the whole he enjoys life with me and Monty.

Today will be fiendishly busy. I’m finishing up laundry, have cooked breakfast, of course, and must pick up cards in the main building so I can write to voters. This afternoon I’m going out with the Raging Grannies from 1:30 to 3:30, after which I will be child-tending from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. I haven’t seen the Three Sisters for ages, so I’m looking forward to hearing all about their European vacation. I’m also bringing the ingredients for Apple Smiles.

One of the writers in my group says she looks forward to “empty square” days on her wall calendar. I’m hooked! Monday and Tuesday are “empty square” days for me as well! I have a great many writing chores to do as well as hanging on the phone with that bloody Vanguard to find out how to solve my access problem. I forgot what my password was, so tried too many times to change it, with the result that it locked me down.

First-world problem, I know. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. We are about to have an entire week of early September temperatures (highs in mid- to low 80s), so I’m already in September mode.

    • What an excellent way to describe them!

One of the writers in my group says she looks forward to “empty square” days on her wall calendar.

I look forward to those as well! I have had several months of appointments to establish myself with a health care provider, a dentist, and an optometrist as well as getting the dog a veterinarian, finding a hair cut place, drivers license and plates and setting up local banking. I have one appointment in September to find out how to get on someone’s list to monitor my cataracts (I really can’t see well at all) and a dental implant that I need but will probably wait until the end of the year to start so that it can be on my 2023 dental insurance. It is nice to begin a week with no places I have to be – a week of empty squares to be filled with whatever-the-hell-I-want-to-do. :)

  6. Good morning, 64 and sunny outside my window today. I’m slow and sleepy this morning, but ice packs are in place so my knees will soon be ready to move. I’ve got a few napkins to hem and flowers ready to arrange so my day will be easy and tonight’s birthday barbeque will be fun. As always, my best wishes to all.

  7. Still 100+, no rain in my area this weekend, there’s a 30% chance on Friday. Even if it does, it won’t be a drought-ender. Anyway, sitting in the office, catching up on what’s going on in the world. Eating overnight oats and getting ready for the work day.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 73 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 90. Mostly sunny skies with rain expected at noon. Yesterday’s storm came from the south west which is quite odd – I wonder if it has to do with the hurricane in the Pacific Ocean.

I am going to ignore the news today and focus on gathering my notes and getting my to-do lists in order. It is already half-way through August and I feel like I just closed the month of July! I had a too-busy week last week and I need to rebuild the lists to match what I have done and what I should be working on.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Morning Meese. Our drought watch here in Kingston has moved up to level two. I am allowed to use a watering can in the garden – but no hose. It’s 63 right now going up to 86.

    State of the schools
Campuses are afflicted with old problems: lack of cleanliness of green areas and exteriors, stains on walls and slime on the ground, and broken structures, among others

  10. I can’t post my usual check in. I get a 406 error when I try. I’ve removed all the quotes and parentheses but no good.

    Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • I am still not 100% sure what causes the 406. I stopped using quotes and that solved the problem for me but I am pretty sure some of my earlier posts had no quotes. There is still something else that it hates. Sorry!

  11. Well, since it accepted this – PV 16.8 KWHs yesterday, m-t-d 213. I just did grocery shopping and am about to hang out laundry. Then I’ll get to twitter.

  12. Good morning, 59 and sunny outside my window. I’m slow to start my day but will ne at my desk soon. Long phone conversations with my daughter are so nice but they do slow down our morning activities. They just returned from a few days on the Oregon coast so it was nice to talk about their adventures.

We enjoyed our birthday barbeque yesterday, but the girls aren’t the only ones getting older…..the rest of us are too! Good to be with family regardless. As always, my best wishes to all.

  13. Hi, Moosekind, it’s still Monday and I can’t find the long, saintly post I banged out this morning about my child-tending experience, how overcast and cool it is today–we certainly aren’t burning in Ashbuggy—and how today, August 15, was known as Diana’s day in ancient times. I’m supposed to take my hunting dogs into the woods today but I’m too exhausted from a much-too-busy day yesterday. Only 3-4 hours’ sleep. It was terrible.

Hope everyone is having a good day. I’ve already had two naps. Daughter is urging me to cut down to one meal a day to lose weight. Gawd, during birthday cake week? Not bloody likely.

    Hope to see you tomorrow!

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Surely I can’t be the first to arrive at the Pond this morning? I thought Jamie Raskin was going to lead a hearing on the Hill, but so far I’ve heard nothing about it. It’s supposed to be a surprise hearing because they have found out a bunch of new stuff. Admittedly, I’ve been away a lot, owing to activities and fatigue, so I’m way behind on the news.

We must have had rain early in the morning because I saw traces of it when I took poor little Monty out to the courtyard for a business meeting. Dearly is even now driving him to the vet for a tooth cleaning and Borditella jab. One of the questions I have for the vet is that Monty’s “male equipment” seems to be hanging low. Meese who have boy dogs, is this normal? Monty is 11 in human years. Just wondered whether or not this is to be expected.

Currently it’s 64 F. in Ashburn. This cool weather has been a real surprise in mid-August! Today’s high will be 82 F. In fact, the whole week we’re supposed to have temps in the 80s. This foretaste of fall has me thinking of September things, including ordering Christmas presents. They can hide under the bed until wanted, no one ever looks there.

Daughter texted heaps of materials yesterday on Intermittent Fasting, causing me to be so paranoid that I ate rosemary-flavored nuts, a thin slice of birthday cake, and 1/3 cup of strawberry ice cream during the day and evening. It would be nice to lose a few pounds but I don’t know that I’m up for fasting.

Enough about my first-world problems. Wishing a nice, not-too-hot day to everyone at the Pond, including sunshine for bfitz and princesspat!

    • I looked for your missing comment from yesterday in the bit bucket and could not find it anywhere! I admit that having to right-click select-all copy before posting a comment is tedious and I fervently wish that the Comment process on WordPress was more reliable. But it is what it is – the alternative is a third party commenting process that I refuse to consider because then we lose control of our ability to manage logins. The main reason I post here is because the rude Internet cannot join in. It may mean we are often quiet but in this day and age (maybe my age?) that is a blessed relief.

      • I’m sorry I caused you to look! I found out what happened. I wrote an email to my poor friend, who is laid up with a new injury to her foot, and copied what I wrote here, describing my afternoon with the Raging Grannies and my evening with the girls. Unfortunately, with the fiendish Apple Pages, when you press “Copy” it frequently “Cuts.” This has happened too often to be carelessness on my part, which is one of the reasons I’m abandoning Apple and its sheety products.

Usually I notice this before too much damage is done, but this was Before Coffee. I should never post Before Coffee.

      • I vote for quiet. Even when WordPress logs me out in the middle of typing a comment or 406’s me. I still vote for quiet. 💖

  15. Tuesday Meese. 61 going up to 86 here in Kingston NY and no rain in sight for at least week, and can’t water my garden under the drought restrictions. :(

HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN PUERTO RICO: Hospitals affected by blackouts

The construction of the Vieques hospital is delayed
They could wait up to a year for the dialysis center

    • Polls are showing Demings running even with Rubio and Beasley within striking distance in North Carolina. Democratic Senatorial candidates need to press their advantage with women – maybe this year even white women will vote for the pro-Roe candidates instead of the candidates that their husbands prefer. We have some excellent Senate ads by Mark Kelly here that remind people just how extreme Blake Edwards is on the issue of women’s reproductive rights. It is a winning issue – we need to make the Republican Supreme Court realize that they may have the power to take away women’s rights but that we have the power to restore them. We need to use that power before Alito repeals the 19th amendment.

    • Dee, I’m so sorry your area is in drought mode. When we Zoomed with the family in the U.K. on Saturday, they said they were too, so they’re not permitted to use a “hosepipe” for the garden.

    • Dee, I hope (presupposing you’re physically able) they’ll let you at least use a bucket to water around the roots of the most delicate stuff. Or perennials/trees who still need establishment water. Holding the Good Thought for rain, soon. Gentle, soaking, rain.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 73 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 91. Sunny skies with clouds and rain expected around 1pm. Yesterday the rain did not materialize and it got very hot! The afternoon monsoonal rains definitely cool things down.

I am enjoying that tRump’s band of election lawyers may finally be paying a price for their attempts to interfere in lawful elections in Georgia and elsewhere. And that the Department of Justice appears to be closing in on those who organized the January 6th attack on the Capitol as a coup. Nothing will stop tRump from running again and nothing will stop Republican voters from supporting him. The host of one of MSNBC’s afternoon shows asked his guests whether Republicans would nominate tRump even if he were indicted and the consensus was that yes, they would. The most prescient comment from the 2016 election is that Trump could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue in broad daylight and it would not change how his base feels about him. A true cult. So an indictment won’t hurt him personally but if enough of his enablers end up in prison – and he is sued into poverty – maybe he will change his mind about running.

I woke up with a plan to get started on a long delayed coding project and I can’t find the code snippet I remembered and which I need. So I need to start a deep search which means eyes forward.

    See all y’all later!

      • I did not find the code snippet but I found references to it in January 2018 emails. My guess is that the snippet is in an old database file and it will be nearly impossible to find because I would have had to keep a backup of the file from that time period which is unlikely (I keep code files but not the actual data). Many of my notes back then were scribbled onto screen prints of the thing that didn’t work and they were likely shredded during my downsizing (I was brutal!). NOW I create Word documents with my notes and the screen print pictures embedded in them and I save them into the cloud so that they will exist for as long as there is electricity on our planet.

  17. Late start today, I got a new work laptop yesterday and the 3rd password (yes, I said 3rd) didn’t work, I had to drive downtown to change it. So now I’m back home, eating breakfast & watching astronomy tv.

  18. Sinusitis last night/early morning. Fell asleep just as I was about to give up and get up. So. Late start, groggy & moving slowly, & backache from sleeping on my back. sigh. Anyway it never cooled off enough to open up. It’s 81 now. Even with the clouds and all I am so looking forward to tomorrow’s coolth. I won’t have to close up again for at least 24 and maybe 48 hours. We generated 15.8 KWHs yesterday and with the m-t-d at 229 we’re still on track for 450.

    As far as I know everybody is still tromping along. Nothing particularly better (except Amelia’s living situation which is immeasurably better), nothing particularly worse. Off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  19. Good afternoon, 72 and sunny today. I had a 9:00 am hair appointment today and slept late so I had to hurry out the door. I really like the latest stylist, both color and cut suits me so I hope she says at the Fairhaven salon for awhile. Time for lunch now, then to a garden shop where terracotta pots are on sale. I really like the rectangular shape for winter plants and arrangements so I hope to find some more. Best wishes to all.
