Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Saturday Meese. It’s -7 degrees here in Kingston. :( I made sure to leave water slightly dripping in the sinks to prevent pipes from freezing.

    relates to this story:

    • I found you on Spoutible! It looks like you are already providing a lot of content there. I won’t be able to Spout because I don’t have a shareable cell phone number but it looks like I can Echo (retweet) and Like. My main purpose for the Twitter-like platform is to find things to read and to amplify other voices.

The Spoutible rollout was quite dramatic! A lot of people signing up all at once crashed the website more than once. There was some confusion – some folks (me included) thought we had pre-registered and were waiting for an invitation. Nope, we were just signed up to get notification emails. In any event, anyone can sign up at spoutible.com, provide an email and a user name and get started. My advice is to find someone who is likely to have good follows/followers (like Dee) and choose to follow some of her peeps. It seems easy to use – I am hoping someone builds an app so I can use it from my phone but the web site works fine for now.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 46 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 70. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Tomorrow is the end of Solar Winter but I think that must only be for places like the Desert Southwest! There is a whole lot of winter everywhere else in the country.

The news is awful – everywhere I look, Republicans are destroying everything we hold dear. I hope the media calls out the lies about Republicans not setting their sights on destroying Social Security and plunging millions of older Americans into poverty. “Reforming Social Security”, when it is on the lips of a Republican, is code for privatizing and gambling my retirement on the vagaries of the stock market. Any media outlet that lets them get away with their denials of what they literally ran on in 2022 needs to be called out and shunned.

I did not get back to the Moose yesterday but will check everyone’s comments this morning. I am trying to complete work on a project that needs to be done before next weekend when I am hoping to take a short driving trip. I think I am finally ready to get into a car again for a road trip (the memory of last year’s difficult trip is finally fading enough). I am hoping that I have recovered enough so that trips to Phoenix to watch Spring Training baseball games later this month seem routine.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning. I think it’s done freezing, I’ll uncover my plants today. Got groceries to pick up & lunch to cook. Eating breakfast & watching Ali Velshi. They’re having a special segment on the Banned Book Club with Nicole Hanna-Jones.

  4. It’s 39 heading for 52 and overcast. It must have gotten below freezing last night even though the widget says not because the ground was hard when I took out the mail and put out birdseed. It took several hours yesterday for the sun and warmer-than-freezing temps to clear the panels, but they did get clear and we did get 5.4 KWHs of production. The m-t-d is 6.6 and off track for even and “at least” of 190. We shall see what we shall see.

    I’m figuring the servers at Spoutible will crash again Monday when open enrollment starts so I may wait until Tuesday to sign up. While I kind of doubt it will become the small business and fundraising venue that twitter is, I most certainly want to find and follow my friends. And that’s why I signed up for twitter in the first place. Speaking of which. . . Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • There is no “open enrollment” period – it is open right now. I did not get an invitation nor did I preregister, I was just on a mailing list about features. I found out that it was accepting signups via a Tweet by CBouzy. It doesn’t much matter, there won’t be much content initially. My biggest concern was making sure that my cross-platform user id @JanF_Blogs was not co-opted. Mission Accomplished!

      • Interesting. When I tried to sign up on the 1st I got a message – after the servers came back up – that since I hadn’t preregistered I needed to wait until the 6th. Oh well. Just hoping nobody gets my bfitzinAR user id.

  5. Good morning, 51 and cloudy, perfect weather for clipping ivy. I made progress yesterday, but didn’t finish so I’ve got more to do. I’m going to take an antihistamine before starting because yesterday the dust and pollen triggered sneezing and hives. How I wish this old body of mine were easier to manage! Oh well, garden therapy is still good for my soul regardless. Best wishes to all.
