Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 12th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning. Near freezing, maybe I should have brought plants in, we’ll see. Today: groceries, maybe some cooking (long weekend so there’s no rush on next week’s lunch), definitely my 50th walk in a row. High today will be in the 50s, so that will be nice.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 54 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 66. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The local TV guys say we will get 74; when the sun warms things up, it will be quite pleasant.

    Fox “News” giving a platform to liars is under scrutiny. I hope the judge does not issue a summary judgement in their favor – this case really needs to go to trial. What are the limits of turning over your extremely powerful microphone to crazy people and cranks to lie about something as important as the validity of a presidential election? That they helped foment the deadly riot at the Capitol on January 6th is a given – will they be held accountable? I remember when Bill O’Lielly literally encouraged a gunman to attack and kill some years ago, they claimed 1st Amendment immunity and “who could have known that encouraging people to kill would lead to their killing people!” Maybe there needs to be some limits – certainly yelling “fraud” to a demented viewership and encouraging them to “fight the steal” should be looked at.

    I am trying to figure out how to block the 2024 Republican Primary stories from my brain. At least in 2016, we had our own primary to keep us entertained. The RNC is demanding an endorsement pledge for their sponsored debates – all participants must sign a pledge to endorse the eventual nominee. Ha! You know that tRump won’t agree and some candidates are planning on running on “tRump is a menace” so how will that work? I am glad we don’t have a primary.

    Today is day four of my cold. It starts as a sore throat and laryngitis then moves to my head then my chest and then moves out. The problem is that I have not had a cold since 2019 and all my cold meds are expired! Last night I got generic Nyquil to knock the snot out of me and it worked to sleep. I understand from the googles that I can’t get Comtrex Maximum Cold tablets any longer, my go-to med, and that snotdryer Sudafed is behind the counter. I will go to the store later today and see what the current generation of cold medications looks like. Today I need to deal with drying my head so that I can function enough to get some accounting work done. It is mostly mindless work so I don’t need to be alert, just not having to reach for a Kleenex every five minutes.

    See all y’all later!

    • Sudafed is behind the counter these days but at least the price has come back down. And it does keep you awake. Good luck with finding something that works for you. Healing Energy. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Oh, Jan, poor you! Alka Seltzer Plus for Colds does it for me (they have day and night capsules), but I can’t take them more than three consecutive days. The fourth day, they make me feel nauseated.

      Hot news—since I started taking a daily Vitamin C tablet along with my other pills, I haven’t had a cold in a year and a half! I used to get one every four to six weeks. I don’t even care whether it’s psychosomatic, I’m just so happy not to be out of action and sniffling and blowing for a week at a time.

      Good luck with yours!

  3. It’s 36 going to 52 today and sunny. At the moment. The widget says clouds will move in midmorning. I hope they are wrong & it’s late afternoon. But these climate-collapse days it’s always safe to bet on clouds. sigh. SolarEdge is doing an update so I can’t get to my electricity data right now but we reached 12 KWHs yesterday – I remember that because it’s the highest single day we’ve had this year. Since 9/8/22 in fact. I looked it up. That 12 was the highest for September, too, which wasn’t really good. But it’s good for February. I don’t remember what the m-t-d is but I’m thinking it’s got to be around 112.

    Nothing new that I can think of. Including I still can’t spout on Spoutible. I’ve tweeted & DM’d Chris but I’m not really surprised I haven’t heard back. The man’s got to be crazy busy.

    Sometime later today I need to mix up and fry a batch of breakfast sausage. One of which I’ll have for lunch. Making them in smaller batches has the benefit of being done sooner and the drawback of not lasting as long. LOL. Meanwhile, off to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good Saturday morning, Meese. It’s bright and beautiful here in Ashboring, 31 F. at the moment and going up to 50 F. It was in the 20s when we woke up. I didn’t get out of bed until 7, which is unusual for me, but I enjoyed it.

    We’re off to a very slow start this morning. It’s past 10 and I’m still in my dressing gown. Really must make a move soon. I did go back to the gym for the first time in ages and took it slowly. In the past I’ve overdone it after being away, much to my regret. My goal is to lose 10 pounds by Christmas.

    Elder Son and family are in Seven Springs, PA this morning, skiing. Nora’s birthday party is tomorrow. I wonder what they’ll be doing, and whether Younger Son will send photos. We had tremendous wind and rain yesterday, it was quite fierce. We ended up with .55 of rain, which brings us to 1.20″ under normal for the year to date. That’s better than a couple of weeks ago.

    It makes me want to cry that the weather is so unnatural. The poor little buds that will die when it freezes again—who wouldn’t cry? Next week will be even more unnatural, with a high of 70 F. predicted for next Thursday.

    Dearly returned from his two doctor appointments yesterday, exhausted. The oncologist said his leukemia has worsened a little, but not to the extent they need to begin treating it. He always feels cold, now, his hearing has worsened, and he sleeps a great deal. Not good.

    Well, I really must get dressed and start being productive. At least I turned in one article yesterday, now for the next one.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  5. Good morning, 41 and raining in my garden today. I was outdoors for a few hours yesterday and despite my creaky joints it was nice. I did make two spring arrangements for the patios using real twigs and branches, faux flowers, and containers that won’t freeze. More snow and cold are in the forecast but ever blooming bulbs are going to survive regardless! Best wishes to all.
