Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 2nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  3. Good Wednesday, Moosekind. ‘Tis a dark and rainy morning—in fact, the rain is coming down heavily. It’ll water the new plants I’ve put out on the porch in little pots. Like our Sister Denise, I can’t plant them in the tub garden this morning because it’s raining too much.

Porridge seemed appropriate for breakfast on such a day, so we had that. Now we’re enjoying coffee. Yesterday The Home for the Aged had its first famers’ market! I scored two punnets of fresh, sun-ripened stawberries, a large, luscious lettuce and two tomato plants—grape tomatoes and Sungolds. There were tons of people there, so I was glad Elizabeth, a neighbor whom I’ve just met, and I had gone there early. I later heard the guy hadn’t been expecting such a response! Well, I’ll be there every week, for sure. One of the things I miss the most about living here is visiting the farmers’ market.

Yesterday I visited the foot doctor for the first time. After i took off my shoes and socklets, she examined my feet. “Your feet are a mess,” she said bluntly. I lifted an eyebrow. “I’m a Pisces.” “So am I,” she replied, and began grimly sawing away at some dead skin while waiting for the local anesthetic to take effect on the ingrown toenail. The doctor also tapped my feet with a tuning fork and told me I have neuropathy. Huh? This is bad news, Meese. Also, I’m to examine my shoes and socks before putting them on and making sure there are no pebbles, nails, scorpions, or whathaveyou in them. OK.

She told me to see her again in eight weeks and to take a multivitamin. What? Anyway, I really like her.

I had to take a sleeping pill last night after three consecutive nights of inadequate sleep. Therefore I’ll have to eat a lot of delicious strawberries and read a couple more chapters of The End of Everything to exercise my brain. In 7 million (or was it 7 billion?) years, our earth, in fact our whole solar system and our sun are going to be swept up into a celestial inferno and nothing will exist. That means Stonehenge, the Pyramids, the U.S. Capitol, Shakespeare’s grave, the Pont du Gard, everything! It doesn’t bear thinking of, but reading about celestial mechanics will boggle my mind. You can easily understand why I am unimpressed by fireworks. Who cares about that stuff when you can grab a telescope and see the real thing? Somewhere in the universe a red supergiant has just exploded into a supernova, which will dwindle down to a white dwarf and then be swallowed by a black hole.

I’m still in my nightshirt, drinking coffee, so that’s enough from me today. Wishing everyone at the Pond a nice, moist day, except bfitz, who I hope will have a hot, sunny day. Blessed be.

    • “Neuropathy” and “scorpions in your socks”? That does not sound good – I shall have to visit the googles.

  4. Good morning all! Gorgeous day here. May log off early & walk this evening instead of setting the alarm to walk in the morning. Maybe. Watched the first 3 Star Wars movies yesterday, and this morning they’re showing Rogue One — a much better prequel than those horrible ones Lucas did. So today’s plan: work & more Star Wars.

  5. Thank the goddess – at least another 6 months of blessed silence.

  6. It’s 47 heading for 70 (or so) and sunny. Which is really nice after the 3-KWH day we had yesterday. Started this morning with 39 as the m-t-d but if the sunshine holds we might even be to 60 by the end of today. Not likely. But possible.

Karen emailed that she’d “a little better”. I haven’t heard from Jill. Lisa sounded good on the phone. She sounded happy, mostly with her “company” but also with her progress on stuff needing doing. She wasn’t able to do as much as she did Monday but with the help of a friend she still got more stuff done. And made some new contacts that will help her get stuff done in the future. I fully expect her to crash for the rest of the week – or longer – except for gathering the energy to deal with the rent tomorrow. Step by step by step.

It would be justice if only the folks who refuse to vaccinate would get sick and die. That’s never been the way it works though. I don’t have the answer. I hope the Biden-Harris Administration does.

    I hope I can get a walk in today. The sunshine is marvelous but the temps are a bit chilly for me. It’s so nice to get out and just walk. Even if it’s only 25 minutes, it’s still nice. Moar coffee then over to twitter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 51 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. I put reality on hold and read a book yesterday so I’m just catching up with the news. A reprieve from tRump’s dangerous lies, and DOJ’s lies seeing the light. Feels important for our democracy.

I need to tend to business today, laundry, my desk, etc, so I’d best get busy. Best wishes to all.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 45 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 57. Showers are in the forecast.

Liz “Dick” Cheney is the voice of reason and integritude in the Republican Party? Holey Mackeral! I also saw that Charlie Sykes, a right-wing commentator who was the creator and enabler of Scott Walker and the scorched earth Republicanism that begat tRumpism, was trying to get his Bell Curve pal Paul Ryan to “step in and fix things” in his role as party elder and designated adult. I almost hurt myself laughing – Paul Ryan enabled tRumpism by giving it life and breath in 2016. The party needed a Lincoln Project in 2016 and they had no one with the courage to say “JHC, do we really want to be defined by this literal pile of human garbage who has no respect for democracy or democratic institutions?” There is no hope for the Republican Party – it needs to be burned to the ground. Nicole Wallace on MSNBC yesterday interviewed a Republican from Texas who ran as an anti-Trumper in a congressional race. He voted for tRump in 2020 because “he can’t vote for tax and spend Democrats and baby killers.” Well, there you have it – you can’t be anti-Trump and prop up his party, you have to vote for the only party that can stop him. Anything else is hypocrisy.

I wonder how Joe Manchin likes being a party (patsy?) to Mitch McChinless’ plan to block the Biden Agenda until Republicans can take back the Senate? Nice legacy you will have there, Joe.

It is Thursday already and I am behind. Yesterday I had to run some errands and that always throws off my schedule – I can never seem to restart work projects.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Another early morning walk/run — I did 9 30-second running segments! It was cool enough that I needed long sleeves. So the weekend day that I do will be the first of step 2. (I’ve gotta look that up). Today’s plan: just work. Gorgeous weather here, low humidity & high of 84.

  11. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s all things bright and beautiful here in Ashburn this morning, cool and beautiful with a current temp. of 53 F. It’ll climb to 65 F. later today. I’m going to wait to plant what I’ve got until Saturday, when I’ll be able to plant it all, I hope.

Still wondering why the foot doctor told me to take a multivitamin. I didn’t know feet needed vitamins, but I shall obey instructions.

Hate to say I’m going to do anything because all too often just saying it takes up 97 percent of my energy and I end up not doing it! This morning I definitely want to get my hair done and do some grocery shopping. After that we’ll see.

The Committee meeting I thought I was going to have last Thursday is actually today. It just shows what happens when one becomes old and addled. Anyway, I must do my best to get something done, however small.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and ants in their pants to all the male Rethugs.

  12. It’s 60 going to low 70s and sunny again (at the moment anyway). Yesterday was wonderful. We generated 22.8 KWHs – the highest single day since July 12, 2020. The m-t-d at 63 still isn’t on track of course. One single wonderful day of production doesn’t make up for multiple days of below-10-KWH generation. But it’s a start. Holding the Good Thought for today.

Once it’s a little warmer, I’m going out to do a shopping run. I need to resupply my supplements and a few other things I can only get at the Co-op and I’ll stop at the grocery store on the way back just because it’s on the way. I’m not out of anything now but I will be by next week and don’t want to make any more trips out than I have to. Maybe get take-out for lunch. Maybe.

Haven’t heard from Fineena. Lisa’s crashed physically and mentally but is still very much “up” emotionally from having the friend visit as well as the help with getting things done. Rent’s due today. We’ll see how much she manages to get out and do other than dealing with that. Jill’s home – the trip/traveling was OK but nothing else was. She has gotten another couple of small donations on the GFM – it’s now reached 10% of her goal. I may or may not add to that but I am going to send her some gift cards. There are problems with all forms of sending folks help but at least the gift cards won’t take a cut of the funds – and can’t be bolluxed up, held, or flat-out stolen because somebody files a complaint. & one of the folks on my/Aji’s needs thread met her goal early this morning so a W00T! for that.

    My hands decided today would be a good day to have a Raynaud’s flare. Sigh. But they’re still functional. Mostly. And that’s what counts. Heading over to twitter to do my twitter stuff before they decide to not be functional. Coffee first. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good morning, 55 and cloudy in Bellingham. Thanks to Sue’s help my house is clean and the laundry is done but I’m really weary. I want to start planting flowers in my garden containers so I may go to the garden shop and start making a plan. I know I need to keep my BCH leg elevated this morning so I’ll see what happens this afternoon.

Haven’t read the news yet so I’ll find some coffee and see what’s happening. Best wishes to all.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 43 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 54. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

It is good to see Joe and Kamala on the road pushing infrastructure and local projects. I am anxious to hear if Joe Manchin was embarrassed by Mitch McChinless’ statement that he is working 100% to block the Biden agenda. That is who is the boss of you, Senator. I hope West Virginians remind you that they need roads and bridges and broadband and eldercare also and that your siding with the Republicans will hurt them.

I was laughing at the Arizona Republic columnist who suggested that if the Arizona Senate Republicans and their “election experts” want to find out if there are Maricopa County ballots printed on bamboo paper, that they bring in some Pandas, throw the ballots in the middle of the arena and see which ones they eat! Republican idiocy would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous.

Can’t stay – I have 3 projects “cooking” and need to finish them before I run out of steam.

    See all y’all later!

  15. 44 going up to 63 here in Kingston NY.
I finally got to start my garden yesterday and am feeling it this morning – I ache all over, tho it’s a good kind of accomplishment pain.

  16. Another gorgeous day, a little humidity building. Today’s plan: work til 3, pick up groceries…..and that’s it. The Texas legislature is advancing bills to turn us into a super-armed version of Gilead, so I’m trying to ignore the news as much as I can.

    • I suppose there is little chance that they will give in to pressure and stop their assault on democracy? :(

  17. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! Well, it’s probably good for someone, somewhere. The political news makes me feel ill. Also the idea that we’re going to be stuck with ole Terry McAuliffe (most likely) as gubernator is depressing. He’s so 20th century! However, he is a Dem, and not a Joe Manchin “Dem” at that.

It’s chilly in Ashburn today, 45 F. at 5:30 when I took Monty to the courtyard this morning, only 50 F. on its way up to 64 F. now. Got lots to do, of course. Will I get any of it done? Stay tuned.

Received bad news this morning. My cousin in Texas, who is 10 years younger than I, has esophageal cancer (that’s what killed Ann Richards). His doctor told him he has a year to live. Also, my uncle, whose wife died last year, is not feeling well. I must get “thinking of you” cards out to them.

Elder Son has asked us over for Mother’s Day brunch. How delightful! Hope I can get into something decent-looking.

Glad to hear Dee has started on her garden, bfitz received some sunlight, and that princesspat is planning her flower garden plan. Tomorrow Dearly and I plan to visit Lowe’s and get our tomato and zucchini plants. Good luck with work today, Jan and another!

Wishing a good day to all. Can’t wait to see Yamiche Alcindor on “Washington Week” tonight! I was hoping they’d pick her for permanent hostess, and my wish has been granted. Yay!

    Blessed be.

  18. It’s 52 heading for 70 and sunny at the moment. Widget says clouds will move in soon and blanket us – mostly without but some with rain – for the next week. I devoutly hope the widget’s wrong. Yesterday was another 22.8-KWH day bringing us to 85 for the m-t-d. Not on track for 500 – that would have been 100 – but definitely gaining. And just good to have the sunshine.

Karen’s still got pain and nausea. Since the pain meds aren’t the cause of the nausea, it’s entirely possible the pain itself is. I know pain makes me nauseous. Anyway she’s got a doctor’s appt Monday. I wish it were sooner but if that’s what she could get, then that’s what she could get. Amelia’s still in “crashed” mode as far as physically and mentally are concerned, but still doing just fine emotionally. She didn’t even have anxiety over the rent when the credit card was denied the first time. Just called, got it cleared up, and got the rent paid. This is seriously good. Jill’s picked up a few more donations on the GFM – has 12 donors and 15 donations at the moment. With what’s on the GFM plus the gift cards I sent her (they’re physical cards being mailed so who knows when she’ll get them), she’s well over half way on the propane fridge and just over a quarter of the way on the full goal. Aji’s using anger/adrenaline to stay upright and more or less functioning. Taxes – 4-figures worth – are due in a couple of weeks, the plumbing and the damage the leaks caused can’t be put off fixing any longer which is another 4-figures, she and Wings and the horses all have medical visits in the next 2 weeks & hers is likely to run 4-figures by itself. So no sleep, lots of pain, lots of money going out, and scared about making the taxes – Hold the Good Thoughts.

I did do my shopping yesterday and am now stocked for 3 months with supplements and 3 weeks for food. Bless Fayetteville’s mayor and city council – we’re still masking in stores. (Mostly. I saw more than a few with masks on but noses showing. Even in the Co-op. sigh.) I also did stop at Sabor Guacamole and get take out for lunch – that enchilada plate I’ve been craving for months. The lawn guys were in the neighborhood and dropped by to see if I wanted mine done which I most certainly did. (I keep trying to hold out for 3 weeks between mowings but the grass is not cooperating.)

As to the “outer” world, same ol’ same ol’ – we are going to have to break up the MSM/RW propaganda machine to change it. If the MSM can’t run an “Ebil Dems – see both sides” headline or a “Dems in Disarray” story, they drop us into a media black hole. I’ve watched them do it since 1980 although I didn’t realize what I was seeing until they were doing it to Bill Clinton. sigh.

    Off to twitter, after I get my coffee of course, and check my email. I’m hoping I can get a walk in later when it warms up a bit. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  19. Good morning, 46 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I didn’t go to the garden shop yesterday but I had fun thinking about doing so :) An unexpected rain storm kept me indoors and today’s outdoor time will be spent trying to get a tree guy here to remove a broken branch way up high in the fir tree behind our house. As always, flowers will happen eventually. Best wishes to all.
