Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 5th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Wednesday Meese. Thunderstorm here atm. Sigh.

    Puerto Rico

    Reduction of Social Security benefits would be fatal for Puerto Rico

    In Yauco, the Ernesto Ramos Antonini specialized school was flooded. Given the emergency, the director instructed the students to go up to the second level.

    • Social Security benefits everywhere are going to be reduced in 9 years if our cowardly do nothing Congress can’t figure out how to fund it. My social security pays my rent and I am certain that I am not the only one who is in that situation. A bunch of homeless seniors is not going to be a pretty optic – the next Democratic Congress should bite the bullet and fix Social Security once and for all by eliminating the cap on earnings.

  2. Good morning. Yesterday’s testimony was rough. I listened to about five minutes of news, then had to move on to something to get that out of my head. Going to the gym at lunch, taking a long one so I can run/walk and lift weights.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The new moon was last night (and at 0.3% illumination this morning) so it is unlikely that there will be a visible moon this morning. Moon rise is at 5:40am MST and it takes about 30 to 40 minutes for the moon to clear the mountains – even if she were big enough to see, there will be too much light in the sky from the sunrise.

    Good lord, I made the mistake of opening a story about tRump cursing in court and read about the testimony of the porn star’s sexual encounter with him. MY EYEZZZ!! I CANNOT UNSEE!! It is interesting – one of the newspapers I read called Stormy Daniels a “porn star” and another one called her an “actress.” I wonder if the sanitized version is to avoid right-wingers writing profanity-flecked letters to the editor?

    Biden will be in Wisconsin touting a Microsoft investment to turn Walker’s Folly, the Foxconn “manufacturing plant” in Racine County, into something that brings jobs and money to the state. That was a horrible boondoggle with Scott Walker and his legislative lap dogs handing billions of dollars over to Foxconn, grabbing the land then bulldozing over centuries old family farms and then being shocked – I say – shocked that no more than a handful of jobs would be created. I am glad to see something coming from the complete disruption of the quiet farming community and the billions of taxpayer dollars squandered on that project.

    I am getting fairly close to clearing my head from travel brain and clearing my to-do stack down to a doable list of projects. I want to try to get my Inbox under control this morning – I have a lot of things tagged for followup and I am going to guess that at least one of them should have been followed up before now.

    See all y’all later!

  4. It’s 77 heading for 82 and sunny at the moment. Clouds & rain are supposed to move in later today, much less and later than last night’s forecast thankfully. If both clouds & rain can be shoved just a few more hours out, we’ll get a good production day. Like yesterday’s 21.1 KWHs. The m-t-d at 90 is still not on track, even for 400, but it gained some ground.

    Fineena didn’t call last night. If she doesn’t call me sometime today, I’ll try to call her this evening. One of the bolts holding the tank to the bowl on the toilet rusted through and fell out last night. Always something in an old house (not that 59 years is really old for a house). I’d replace it myself except a piece of the bolt is still stuck in there and I haven’t got the tools to get it out. Nor the bolt and seal to replace it with. So I called the plumber. He’ll be out sometime tomorrow. At least it’s not a major job.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good morning, 50 and mostly sunny outside my windows today. Our son was here yesterday working on 3 more storm windows. That project moves along as he as time for it, as does cleaning out the gutters. Elsa was good company for me, wanting to sniff everything I touched. She is a curious and fun companion :) My sister is sick with either allergies or a cold so tonight family dinner is postponed until she knows. That’s fine with me because I’m weary and my right leg really hurts. Per PT I am making progress rebuilding strength in my legs but it’s a slow process.

    I’m also making progress with my desk mess, but online bill paying is not as easy as it should be so I’ve got to go to the Verizon store and try to get a real person to help me access my online account. I manage our plan but all the info is in RonK’s name and my request to change the log info so I can respond with my phone has locked the account. I was on the phone nearly an hour yesterday but the rep couldn’t sort it out so I’ll see what a person can do. For now the account is locked, the bill is due and there is a charge to pay via phone. This is the 3rd month of trying to “fix” this so I don’t have high hopes. One more try and then I’m looking for a new carrier. Best wishes to all.

  6. Good morning. Did my walk — just a walk because it is 77 degrees already. That’s normal, even cool for July or August. Wrong for May. Anyway, I’m in the office, enjoying the a/c.

  7. Thursday Meese. 58 going up to 68 and sunny here in Kingston.
    Puerto Rico

  8. Good Thursday morning, Meese! ‘Tis gray and 67 F. in Ashburn, and they’re predicting rain this evening. Well, that’s better than the tornadoes they originally predicted, isn’t it?

    Yesterday was spent preparing for the Cast Party, getting through the Cast Party, and recovering from the Cast Party. Had an awful night, so I’ll have to spend at least part of the morning getting over that. I’m still scarfing down oatmeal porridge every morning in the hope of acing it on the fasting blood test next Tuesday.

    The next thing I need to do is plan the Summer Solstice Ritual. I’ve reserved the space, they’ll let us have a fire in the fire pit, so Betsy and I need to plan the details. Last year a 101-year-old woman attended. Speaking of 100+ year-old-women, I’m sending flowers to a 102-year-old family friend. I used to send her cards and letters but alas, she can hardly see to read any more.

    Woke up at 3, could not get back to sleep, and feel awful! And today my writers’ group meets!

    That’s all my news for now. Wishing a good day to everyone at the Pond.

  9. It’s 58 heading for 78 and sunny. At least at the moment. We generated 15.5 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 105.6 is at least on track for 400. Barely.

    I did talk to Fineena last night for a few minutes. She’s in pain and having some confusion. She fell coming back from the bathroom. And thinks that’s the only time she’s fallen. (It’s not.) She doesn’t like the place she’s in and is worried about her stuff back in the apartment. When we had to get off the phone (we were having a storm here & my lights were flickering) she was waxing wroth about the doctor there who, his first visit after she was told her diagnosis, said it was pretty much up to her as to when she wanted to let go. She wants a doctor to say “this is how we fight this” not “tell us when you want to quit”.

    As far as I know everybody else is truckin’ along. Including me. Waiting on the plumber and getting started on my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 57 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    :::scan headlines – see that RFKjr has a brain worm and Barron tRump is enterring the political arena – closes news feeds:::

    I am in the midst of switching to a different computer for my daily work and it is making my head spin! The computer I had been using is old and slow and has started failing to launch my email program on the first attempt on most days. I will be using both computers for a period of time until I migrate the settings I need on a daily basis. Today, I am trying to get the bare minimum I need and then I will set aside the complete migration until I have more time.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning. Feels much better out this morning, only 5 degrees cooler but no hot wet blanket over the city. Did my walk/run, posted fundraising links on Twitter, Blue Sky and FB. Hope I can stay awake all day.

  12. Friday Meese. Raining here, so no gardening today.

    Puerto Rico

  13. It’s 60 heading for 74 and mostly sunny today. Yesterday we generated 16.1 KWHs and the m-t-d at 121.8 is on track for 400 and gaining ground.

    Fineena didn’t call last night but Edrie called to get an update on Fineena. Basket gave her my number. (We agreed that he is a treasure as he most certainly is.) We also spent about 2 hours catching up on why each of us is no longer at DK. She took herself off DK due some issues w/ the “kool kidz” that bled over into RL relationships shortly before I was banned so she didn’t know anything about that and hadn’t realized I hadn’t left voluntarily. She met and visited with Fineena some 10 years ago, Fineena even loaned Edrie her car while Edrie was in Charlotte dealing w/ some legal issues back when she was still living on the west coast. Edrie said she’d try to call Fineena some time this morning.

    My plumbing issue was easily fixed – by someone with the proper tools to do it – and only $50. A lot less that the last plumber I called, over 15 years ago, charged for just coming out. So. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    I was forced to update my FireFox browser and it disappeared my tabs so I can’t read the news and post on the Moose at the same time. Maybe eliminating news reading is a protection device – FireFox said they would protect me!

    Busy day as I try to finish the setup of my new computer.

    See all y’all later!

    • I figured out what happened to my FireFox. I had at one time customized the menu bar experience (using css code I found on the Internets) to put the tabs BELOW the address bar where my brain prefers to see it. When the new FireFox was installed, it applied the code in a way that killed the tabs. I was able to remove the code and it restored my tabs – not where I had them but at least where I can see them.

      Phew! Now, after spending several hours on this, I am exhausted and will go sit and play word games and solitaire.

  15. Good morning. On my way to my Saturday group workout. Got to remember to take pictures to post on the social media things for fundraising.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Steve Bannon lost his appellate court appeal to stay out of jail because of his contemptuousness, I mean contempt, but will likely appeal to tRump’s SCOTUS and stay out of jail in the hopes that his old boss will pardon him should he return to power. Another example of the rogue’s gallery of felons and traitors who will be pardoned and probably given jobs in any new tRump administration. Goddess help us if we can’t stop him.

    I had an easy week with no new projects heaping on me and successfully deferring work on my current projects. I now have a fairly good to-do list and will be able to begin work once I finish my computer rearranging. It will be nice not working on a computer manufactured in 2013 and with layers of operating systems and software. It will take some getting used to, though, Things Are Different.

    See all y’all later!

  17. Saturday Meese. I’m pissed off today because the Puerto Rico national women’s basketball team is playing the Las Vegas Aces today in Columbia South Carolina -to a sold-out crowd and the game is not being televised.

  18. It’s 63 heading for 80 and “mostly sunny” today. Hopefully the same kind of “mostly sunny” we got yesterday when we generated 22.5 KWHs. The m-t-d is 144.36 – on track for 400 and gaining ground on 450.

    I talked to Fineena last night. She’s not doing great but she says she’s “OK” – other than she doesn’t like the place she’s in and if she can’t go home she’d rather be back in the hospice wing of the hospital. They were cleaner and had better cooks.

    Nothing new that I know of going on with anybody that I know of. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  19. Good morning, 59 and sunny outside my windows today. I’m going to lunch with son #2 today and after we’ll visit a garden shop. It’s nice to just be together. I love our family times but when everyone is here it’s hard to visit with him. It’s been a busy few days with a funeral service for an old friend on Thursday and spending time with my sister yesterday. Lots of memories to process. Best wishes to all.
