It Takes A Village – VNV Saturday: Random Tweets Edition Open Thread 2/25/17

I won’t be able to be around much today, but I wanted to make sure there was a Saturday space for conversation about the consequential and inconsequential. Chat amongst yourselves…

I just love this site; the name is irreverent, but the daily news brief is solid:

From another of my Twitter favorites (Al was described once by a favorite, equality-minded Berner as “pompous and arrogant”); wasn’t Ed one of the purest of the pure?:

It’s likely to be Perez, but this is someone to watch…a home state opinion writer sure likes him!

Can’t do without a daily dose of alt-POTUS 45; it’s worlds better than Dolt-45.

Thread. But this is something we must keep pushing. Call your reps/Senators and tell them an independent commission is a necessity!

And ending this with cuteness and love, because we all need more cuteness and love in our lives.

  1. Thanks and good morning, DoReMI.

    Looks like I now have a new, favorite news site (WTF Just Happened Today?)
    Excellent!

    Good on the pack of geriatric chihuahuas for being cool about the kitten.

  2. good morning DoReMi and thanks for the informative roundup. I never could stand Ed Schultz, he was why I quit MSNBC when they gave him a program. I thought he was a smug, pompous asshole who could never be counted on when it was important. The Susan Collins of newsmen if you will. And now look at how he’s finally confirmed that publicly, I wish I’d been wrong instead.

  3. Thanks for the interesting news roundup and cute doggy video, DoReMI! Greatly enjoyed it. Hope everyone will have a good day.

    So you are also a Sewing Goddess—now we have two! Princesspat is one too. I love her descriptions of her sewing room and the articles she makes to beautify her home and her granddaughters.

    • Goddess might be overstating it. But I won’t be falsely modest either…a minor demi-goddess in the pantheon would be acceptable!

  4. {{{DoReMI}}} – what a lovely surprise to see a Saturday Hangout at the Moose Pond. I just put one up over at DK although I’ll be hit and miss online today everywhere. My back is still very painful and I need to move frequently. Sitting here typing is not any more comfortable than anything else, but it gets worse the longer I sit. sigh. At least it’s not as bad as the first couple of hours after I bunged it up. Love the chihuahuas and kitten – definitely cuter than 3 Men and a Baby (or any variation thereof).

    Need to get up and walk around, then work on my Street Prophets diary. No movement whatsoever on gtghawaii’s March rent in 2 days. I’m very grateful to the 3 people who stepped up Thursday evening and Friday morning to take care of Alexandra Lynch but… there are 11 other people on my list. And the fact that it was only 3 people for that $480 says something right there. sigh. Anyway, back as soon as I can. moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • {{{CBD}}} – it’s not being helpful, that’s for sure. I’m not managing to get much done online or offline. sigh. But there are some offline things I have got to get done – like cooking – because not eating is not an option. But it’s better than it was yesterday, to that’s good. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • Movement is key with bad backs, which I know seems counterintuitive to a lot of people. This is something I’ve dealt with most of my life. I don’t have that much trouble with it now — I’ve had one really bad episode in the past decade that I can recall — but it’s because I stay as active as I can, do weight-training (this is particularly helpful for me) — and I STILL sit too much and it’s really frustrating how hard on one’s body that is and how so many jobs require it.

      Yet another reason this whole going after marijuana users has me so utterly steamed. Pot is great for back pain, for me. I have a jar full of really strong painkillers and I find even a quarter of one to be a bit much in terms of how it makes me feel. Pot just takes the edge off and reduces the inflammation over time.

      I’m in my fifties, I’ve officially crossed into the latter half of my fifties, and I’m a pretty active person. I like to travel in less than easy circumstances, and I want to keep being able to do stuff like that. Cannabis is a great fucking thing when you hit your “middle ages,”and I’ve really come out of the closet about it. I also recently got some “VetCBD” drops — medical stuff formulated for your kitties and doggies. It’s not psychoactive. I’ve been giving it to my very elderly fading kitty, who just isn’t quite ready to give up the earth, and it has made a really noticeable difference in how he acts and therefore how he feels.

      I am so fucking sick and tired of the waste of money and the damage to peoples’ lives that the war on drugs has caused and particularly the war on marijuana, because that is a genuinely helpful drug in addition to being enjoyable.

      • Amen to everything you said. I don’t use “the weed” myself (it gives me headaches) but many members of my family have for one reason or another – and the worry that goes with what can happen to somebody who gets caught on top of the reason why they’re using it… And that they OK and even push opioids but don’t allow marijuana, that’s just nuts.

  5. Good morning everyone, it’s nice to have s spot. I hope the compromise candidate with the odd name wins the DNC spot. I’m in north metro Atlanta and will probably hear the screams from here if Ellison doesn’t. The party needs to take the Berners down a few pegs in my opinion

    • the Berners must be marginalized before they do that to the entire Party. They have gotten perilously close already, enough so that I actually dislike them more than the Branch Trumpidians who at least are sincere in their ignorance. My whole life I’ve felt a need to go up and poke at the puffed up self-important mostly because I’ve always assessed them as no threat to my immediate life and they make great sport. I fear it will get me banned one day at teh gos and I’m sure I’ll care a little bit when that happens. Before I move on satisfied that I got at least one admin’s goat good enough to prompt retaliation.

      • Having other Villages makes it easier to say what you think even if there’s a danger of retaliation. You know you have a place where you will still visit with Village friends and can have your say – DK no longer has that “it’s my only…” hold on us.

        • I’ve been conflcted about my participation at DK ever since kos took the side of the racist bigots and ran off so many POC. At least I had no illuisions about kos/admins and have dealt with them and the site at an arm’s length ever since. There are some decent folks there but their numbers are dwindling faster than hopes for sanity from trump.

          • Yes, same here. Three communities hold me there. The pootie peeps I’ve been involved with for years. The community fundraisers I’ve been involved with for months. The Village I’ve been involved with since before it became official. That’s it. If the DK Village is shut down, that’s a third. Once the folks on my community needs list are dealt with one way or another, that’s another third. I’ll be there for the pootie diaries as long as they run – so far so good and it’s almost a year since Tricia died.

          • I really admired how Tricia outsmarted kos to establish that community, she was such a special person and that’s why nearly a year later her influence remains. It’s going to get down to the only place of decency and that’s something I don’t want to stick around to see.

          • Yeah – I don’t want to watch DK purity itself to death. There are other very strong communities there – but only two that are recognized and accepted as a “safe space” – the Pootie diaries and the IGTNT diaries. Even so, I’m not sure how strong that designation is going to last. Remember karma got permanently NR’d for flagging a jerk in a pootie diary fundraiser. And should that ever go, I’m gone. I’ll find other ways to keep in touch with the Pootie people.

      • I am in some ways angrier at the Berners because they claim to be progressive and they should know better.

        • White Male-supporting berners claiming to be progressive have a lot in common with conservatives claiming either compassion or patriotism.

      • Nina Turner managed to be the most irritating off-putting Bernie supporter of his whole campaign and that covers some mighty pretentious ground there. She’s like our very own Kellyanne spouting fact free assertions of grandeur about the object of her devotion. The problem is her existance gives cover to the Kellyannes of the other side or at least reasonable justification for both side-ism from all corners.

      • If they get any nastier about it, the “future of the Democratic Party” is going to walk if he does win. Actually that’s not true. We won’t walk. But we certainly won’t be encouraged to do the kind of work necessary to win elections. I really have no idea why they think we should pay any attention to the opinions of people who back a losing primary candidate who isn’t a member of the Dem Party and spends all his time trashing the Dem Party and taking credit for the things real Dems do/propose. They trash us, they trash our candidates, and they totally disregard every issue that is important to us. And we’re supposed to do what they say? I do not suffer from Stockholm’s Syndrome nor am I a masochist.

    • I’m seeing the DNC fight as a Bernie v Barack referendum, more than Bernie v Hillary. If that interpretation is correct, Perez should win. But as per usual, the Berners on Twitter are already engaging in preemptive bitching and moaning about…something, something. For me, that means it’s a good day to turn off social media, do laundry, and maybe even get some sewing done.

    • I never really watched him on MSNBC except during the first round of WI protests. The fact that he’s sold out so completely makes it clear in retrospect that he was only supporting the WWC, rather than the rights of all workers.

      • He wasn’t supporting anyone but himself and his wallet…Kind of like a certain independent we all can’t stand.

    • Him telling Democrats to not bother voting in the 2010 midterms was a dump truck load of ick.

      • What…I don’t remember that…boy I would have stopped watching the little I did, I had I heard that…my god!

        • From Schultz’s radio show July 30, 2010:
          “…But I’m not giving up on this (advocating for extension of jobless benefits for long-term unemployed). And I think the best way for the 99ers (Schultz’s pre-Occupy name for those without work nearly two years) to get the attention of the Congress is to form an unemployed coalition and just flat-out tell the Democrats, we’re not voting in the midterm. Look, if they don’t realize the seriousness of this, then they don’t deserve to be in office…. The people have to be heard! This isn’t about saving anybody’s congressional ass. This is about saving lives at this point…We’ll just have to go through this generational fight and make it a lesson for the Democrats and make sure that they know that the grass-rooters are serious, that we mean business, and you gotta do it for people and if you don’t, we’re not going to vote!”

          • That’s sort of like saying, “The Rs cut my hand and if you don’t take care of it right now, I’m cutting my hand off! Then you’ll be sorry.”

      • Later rather than sooner. :) Having breakie with my sister and then shopping all over the place – TWO dollar stores!!! ;)

  6. Thanks DoReMI…morning meeses…Strangely enough I kind of liked old Eddie…sure he was pompous but he said it like it was or at least I thought so back then…however right before he was fired things started going a bit sideways so I’m a little surprised about the CPAC gig but not shocked…loved the three dogs and a kitten video…

  7. Morning Sherry…Thanks for the weekend tweets…While I don’t particularly like Chihuahuas because they for some reason think my ankles are for biting the vid was cute.

  8. Morning DoReMI and everyone else! I don’t have a hangover but I still feel very tired. Nevertheless, I shall Purrsist.

      • {{{{fitz}}} Healing energy sent your way for your back…Mine was hurting me Thursday and yesterday…downed a Vicodin…:)…stretched,went for some walks and have a massager for my puter chair.Feel much better now…moar{{{{Hugs}}}}

        • {{{Batch}}} – thank you and to you for yours. I don’t have anything stronger than Ibuprofen nor do I have a massager for my chair, but gentle stretches and walking helps. Glad you are feeling better. moar {{{HUGS}}} back.

          • I do and I have. It worked better yesterday than today. Today mostly gentle walking is helping.

    • Yup, known about that for years. Racists can come up with all kinds of BS to excuse their abuse. Nixon loved it – he could jail black folks and war protesters with one set of spurious drug laws and the DEA.

  9. This DNC battle is not going to end well. Ellison seems to be pulling ahead. Damn Bernie and the Bros they had to make this another bloody war. Its bullying again, and people should focus on drumpf

    • The good news is that Ellison isn’t playing their game. So if he wins, we’ll be fine. Expect the Berners to turn on him in a heartbeat if he doesn’t toe their line.

  10. Er mah gawd, that video is all kinds of cute!!! Thanks for posting that, DO RE MI!

    I haven’t been paying attention to the DNC election, does that make me an oligarch and a corporatist?

  12. p.s. I am having some really weird issues with the site. It keeps telling me that I’m not logged in and when I try to log in it tells me that cookies are disabled and I must enable them. Well the cookies ARE enabled. IDK, I participate in several other word press sites and am not having this problem. We shall see what happens.

    • Diana has that problem sometimes. I think she has to clean the cache to fix it. But don’t quote me on that. {{{Other Lisa}}}

        • Do you visit Chris’ site? Both are on wordpress and your cookies, bread crumbs, whatever may be getting confused as to which wordpress site you’re trying to get to.

          • I figured out that this is what was knocking me off – if I go to sob, I have to log in, then I come back here, I’m logged out and have to log in again.

            Suggested solution, on a laptop or desktop, use two browsers, one for each site?

    • I have that “You are not logged in but my WYgal is showing”. I log off and log back in and I’m fine.

  13. Welp, Perez won and immediately invited Ellison to be Deputy Chair. You’d have thought that gesture would have satisfied the berners. Oh no – 9 of them chanting about big money (what do you think the job of DNC Chair is you nimrods) and he who used to be the great orange satan before the guy with the tribble on his head took the title immediately tweeted out some BS about how the race was between 2 guys neither of whom laid out a “vision for real reform” and it will change nothing.

    Some folks want to take the battle against the Rs. I only know of one place to find them on DK and their numbers are dwindling. But we’re here and we’re Resisting the Rs, not the other Dems. We’ll manage. We always do. It just takes longer when we can’t count on all our people.

    • I saw that tweet from kos and was so discouraged, that’s not how you win people over. It makes it so easy for those on the right to laugh at us and dismiss our concerns. It’s hard enough that the Democratic Party has all these rules regarding fair treatment and transparancy. The Republicans never look as silly as we do because they do all this in secret to come out and announce to the loyal followers what the decisions are. Democrats wouldn’t stand for that so we need to formulate better defenses when the uncommitted gets distracted by how the media reports these decisions. I repeat my amusement at people who disdain membership in the Party while demanding a say in how we govern ourselves.

      • I really wonder what the heck happened to kos though. He started the site to elect more Dems. He understood about party leadership. He understood that blue dogs were sometimes the best we could do in a given area. I always knew he didn’t like Hillary and I assumed that was why he didn’t do his usual purge of naysayers during the general (although he did make them tone it down). That he’d go full-bore Alt-Left bern-it-down has surprised (and disappointed) the heck out of me. Oh well. Thank god/dess for MM.

        • I think he’s afraid of the alt-left berning DK down (similar to MyDD, Firedoglake, etc.) and thinks that pandering/appeasing them will prevent that from happening. What is likely to happen though is everyone else will leave.

          • Kos has out-lasted them all because he’s never pandered to the Alt Left before. Now he seems to be determined to do everything that brought down the other sites. Does he have the hubris to think he can do what failed sites did and get away with it? Actually, he might. But if he does it will be because of all the strong communities that have built up over the years and not the FP. He’ll drive off everybody who is there for the politics, but keep the ones who stayed for community. {{{basket}}}

        • Actually I’ve never seen kos have anything besides totally bad political judgment. When he backs a candidate it’s like a kiss of death, when he jumps on a bandwagon it’s because it’s a spectacularly bad idea. I’ve known guys like that and all I can say is that if they have no other entertainment values they’re best dismissed to make room for better company. What kos is good at is knowing how to build a really great blogging platform, no where else I’ve gone comes anywhere close to what he’s done. That being said content matters to the sentinent.

          • Kos has always loved the most liberal candidates and backed them in the primaries. He’s never gotten the point from all those losses that America isn’t ready for those most liberal candidates unless said candidate was also a “progressive who likes to get things done” – which by Alt Left definition means they really aren’t in the most liberal category even if their voting record says they are. But he’s always put the full weight of DK behind the Dem in the general. He didn’t this time. His blogging platform is really good but he’s shooting it in the foot by going off his original focus of elect more Dems.

  14. Evening Village! Haven’t been online much today, haven’t even been over to DK at all. Maybe I needed a mental health day or something. But I’m glad the DNC chair thing is over and done. Good on Perez. Alt-Leftists, go sit on a tack. Who’s next? :)
