Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: April 16th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 64 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 57 going up to 75 here in Kingston. Looking at the latest insanity from DeSatan/Floriduh

    Puerto Rico

    The countdown to what will be an important exchange between Puerto Ricans has begun. In 7 days @VictoriaPorPR arrives in Florida to carry the message of change that our country urgently needs. Accompany @manuelnatal and @MVCDiaspora. #ElCambioVa

  3. Good morning meese, waking up slowly here. Can’t believe I am going back tomorrow night but such is the nature of holidays.

  4. Good morning. Got my tea steeping, watching the news & eating breakfast. Really happy morning — I got a huge donation and am over my goal for the AIDS Ride! And a friend mailed a check, so I know I’ll be at maybe $2500 or so raised. So, a very good weekend for me, and the people who benefit from the Ride.

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 64 F. in Ashburn, going up to 84 F. later, and it’s a lovely day. Pale blue sky, fuzzy green trees, blossoms, the lot.

    Yesterday we had an 80 percent chance of rain. Duh. It rained a teensy-weensy bit when I came out of Trader Joe’s and was gone by the time I drove into the garage here. This is so awful.

    Well, sigh. The latest news from the ranch: Nora did not get into Thomas Jefferson Magnet High School. DIL said they got the news Friday night. You have to be on the honor roll and taking advanced courses even to take the entrance exam, and Nora had those qualifications. DIL said they’re proud of her anyway, and so are we. I’m half-relieved and half-disappointed. Relieved because there won’t be so much pressure on Nora, and she’ll be spared the three-hour daily round-trip bus ride to the other side of the county, but disappointed because it’s the best high school in the USA, as we know.

    Sigh. First-world problem. I’d be more depressed if I thought academic success had anything to do with success in later life, but when I think of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and even Ray Croc, I feel more philosophical. Who knows where her path will take her? I just hope I live long enough to see her graduate from college.

    Elder Son has invited us to a barbecue at his house this afternoon, so that’s nice. I had a rotten night’s sleep (woke up at 4:30), so I must hasten to get done what I can before I collapse after lunch. I’m still croaking away. I DO wish my voice would return!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. It’s 42 heading for 62 and sunny. Yesterday we had clouds, a little thunder, and if the splots on the solar panels are any indication, about 25 drops of rain. It would have been nice to have gotten the rain we were told we were going to both because we need it and to wash a layer of pollen off the panels. We generated 10.5 KWHs not on track for the day but 222 m-t-d is still on track for the month.

    No further word on my nephew but he’s supposed to be released from the hospital today starting the 2-week break before his next round of chemo.

    I’m just getting online and haven’t checked on anybody (or their fundraisers) yet. All my Sunday housecleaning chores are done – plus I went out and got milk (also gasoline since I was out). Hands are not happy of course. Sinuses are settling down. Not sure why. The pollen certainly hasn’t. Anyway, time to get over to twitter & spoutible and get started. (& Dee’s diary at DK for jazz to boost fundraisers by. LOL.) Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  7. Monday Meese – 43 only going up to a damp and rainy 45 here in Kingston.

    Not much Puerto Rico news today

  8. Good morning meeses, more or less packed (just need to brush my teeth after breakfast and then pack that) and ready to head to the Rhinecliff Amtrak station for a train at 10:51 am.

  9. Good morning. I’m writing a thank you/celebration diary for having surpassed my goal for the AIDS Ride. I’ll post it tomorrow. Did my walk/run this morning, limited my running because my stomach is unhappy. Still did all 9 segments. Going to try to watch some of the Boston Marathon online, I like watching marathons.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday, Emancipation Day …

    It is 57 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny skies are in the forecast. So far the place stays cool enough from the overnight lows to stay comfortable until about 3pm then we have to turn on the air to make sure it will be comfortable into the evening when it will cool down again.

    Well, it would be a bummer if the Dominion v Fox lawsuit settled and the complete perfidy of Fox News and its celebrities wouldn’t be put on full display. Although it is unlikely that it would have changed a single Foxer’s mind – as it is also unlikely that it would even be covered on Fox News.

    So Marj’s Kevin plans to cut food for poor children to balance the budget. Good lord, these people are not just cruel but math challenged. The cost of SNAP is a drop in the bucket in an annual budget. The awful part is that this will appeal to the Republican base because “feeding the poor” is only words to them, not any concrete thing that they believe requires action. Deplorable.

    I need to get ahead of my projects this week. We are already halfway through April and I have things that were promised for March 31st that are not yet embarrassingly late but will be if they go past April 30th.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 56 F. and sunny now that the morning clouds have cleared away, going up to 67 F. The drought is so noticeable that the WaPo even carried a story about it in the Metro section and the weather wenches on TV are starting to say, “We need the rain.” Well, duhh. Still 5 inches under for the year to date. It’s probably because of La Nina. (Wish I could do Spanish accent marks but the stupid Geek got rid of them.)

    Anyway, we had a lovely time at Elder Son’s last night. How did I grow two sons who are such good cooks? DIL was still helping out at the school after “Fun Day,” so Ethan and I took the old, ailing Labrador for a little walk down to the park. I reminded the 7-year-old that when he was a toddler I used to take him to the park and he played on the tot lot equipment. He said he didn’t remember, which is not surprising.

    Arlington County is lovely just now, with the dogwoods coming out, the other trees a misty green or fading purple.

    Had a lousy night despite the sleeping pill, so I’m running on two cylinders today. Luckily today and tomorrow are “empty square days” on the calendar so I can get some work done, even if it’s in somewhat desultory fashion.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  12. It’s 39 heading for 75 and sunny again. Yesterday we generated 19 KWHs! The m-t-d at 241 is on track and gaining ground. Even with a layer of greenish yellow pollen on the panels.

    As far as I know, everybody’s doing as OK as they ever do. JoanMar’s GFM for her Jamaican family is stalled again. And since it’s all Amazon egift cards I won’t know when/if Aji’s non-stick non-toxic cookware will be covered unless she remembers to tell me. She’s in so much pain she’s hard put to remember anything no directly connected with running their business. It’s only 13 more $25 egifts so surely between our several thousand followers that can be done soon. (I know. Don’t call you Shirley.)

    I hate days when I have to use the pliers to open a new jug of milk. And use a knife to get the seal off because I can’t grip the pull-tab. sigh. Oh well. Obviously I can type. Slowly with lots of typos I’m so far catching and correcting. But typing. Heading over to twitter & spoutible (which had a Deplorable Troll attack yesterevening – by 10 pm CB & his team had found & banned almost 200 racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic, homophobic accounts and was still at it) to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good morning, 41 and mostly cloudy. I saw a bit of blue sky earlier this morning, but now it looks like another rainy day outside my window. My sister returned home yesterday so my house is very quiet. I enjoyed her visit but am ready for a rest.. I’ve got loads of laundry to do so I’ll stay downstairs and rest between cycles.

    Saturdays family lunch was fun but very busy. I had hoped to be outside for part of the day but it was too rainy so we were cozy (and noisy) indoors. So grateful my sons are good cooks. I can get my part done before and then they take over and finish. My grand girls are great helpers too, so serving and clean goes smooth too.

    It was interesting to listen to my grand kids talk about school and their plans for their young adult life. Ryan will be 22 yrs old this month, and his baby fork and spoon is still in the silverware drawer. So many memories! Best wishes to all.

  14. Good morning. Posting my “thank you” diary at 11am central (I’m only posting it there because it has lots of music videos). Taking my walk later, right now I’m eating breakfast and watching astronomy.

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 50 F. and sunny at the moment, going up to 70 F. and breezy later. We’re under a fire alert until 8 p.m., so no tossing lighted ciggies out of car windows! Mah gawd, in October it’ll be 40 years since my last cigarette.

    My big problem (besides croaking like a frog, obviously) is that I don’t have enough energy to do what needs to be done around here. I should tell myself: “OK, you can now devote 1 hour to cleaning up your office. Not a minute more, not a minute less.” A few days of that and it would be perfect.

    I have a half-formed plan to gather up all the charcoal bags in this place and put them outside to absorb sunlight for an hour, then redistribute them. It’s supposed to help with the smell. This carpet has been so, um, abused by animals that no matter how many times we get the carpet cleaners in, it only smells okay for a couple of days. Then it starts smelling bad again. First-world problem, I know.

    I seem to be joining a karate class for seniors, starting this Saturday! Wonder whether I have to have bare feet. I have such ugly feet. (Another first-world problem!)

    That’s enough nonsense from me this morning. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • Someone once told me that an overwhelmingly long list of things to do should be pared down at the beginning of each day to three things you will concentrate on actually getting done. I try to do that (I am not always successful) but having a List of Three does help focus. I often only get one done and sometimes two but rarely all three.

      Can you petition the landlord to replace the carpeting if you promise not to have pets again? It sounds like the smell might be in the pad or even the floor. I had a condo once that I shared with a badly behaved cat and the smell had gotten into the plywood flooring. They have methods to treat the wood but the carpeting (obviously) had to go.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    It sounds like the Dominion v Fox trial will happen although I have seen settlement deals made in the courtroom before the trial begins. In theory, they can occur at any time before the final verdict – I suspect that if Fox is not happy with the final makeup of the jury, they might settle. In a civil case, you do not have to have unanimous verdicts to find for the plaintiffs, I think it just needs to be a majority (varies by state). There will be audio but no video of the trial and only a limited number of reporters allowed into the courtroom. It will be interesting to see how it is reported.

    Old white guys with guns shooting people who go to the wrong house. Wonderful. The 85 year old white guy in north Kansas City shooting a Black teenager is not shocking at all but my news feed suggests that a 20 year old white woman was shot in upstate New York for driving into the wrong driveway. The young man from Kansas City did not die but the young woman did. Too f-ing many guns, too f-ing many unhinged people.

    It sounds like we all need to prepare for a debt default. Kevin “Doodiehead” McCarthy has said that there won’t be a clean debt ceiling increase and vowed to stand firm on that. A man who sold his soul to Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar, literal nazis, to win the Speakership, is not going to be reachable by any sensible person. He knows that the minute he would cut a deal to get Democratic votes to pass the increase, he would be booted out. When he finally does give in – possibly when the stock market crashes? – he will look foolish, a look that he has already shown he doesn’t mind. Terrible way to run a country.

    There is a lot going on and I have a few stories up in tabs to read later. Right now I need to finish a project and get it delivered.

    See all y’all later!

  17. It’s 60 heading for 81 and the predicted clouds for today have already come and gone. Which is good considering the rest of the 10-day forecast has us socked in. (Maybe we’ll at least get the rain predicted for 2 or those days.) Yesterday we generated 17.6 KWHs and the m-t-d at 258.7 is on track and gaining.

    Sinusitis flare early this morning so disturbed sleep and consequent grogginess. Hands achy but they’ll get over it by afternoon. Otherwise I’m fine. Wish all my friends were too. But they’re trucking along with their varying levels of pain and/or disability. I haven’t heard from the family. If somebody doesn’t call me today I’ll call them either this evening or tomorrow.

    Between groggy brain and achy/shaky hands I’m moving really slow this morning. More inclined to sit and stare off into space than do anything. LOL. But there’s stuff to boost at twitter & Spoutible so I’d best get to it. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  18. Good morning meese, 47 with a high of 61 in Folsom, CA. Need to adjust to going back to work, lol.

    • {{{basket}}} That’s always a tough adjustment coming back from vacation. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}
