Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 24th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 42 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 59. High winds, dust storms and rain are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 29 degrees here in Kingston, going up to a sunny 41.
    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. I did so much yesterday that even without a specific workout, my watch had me at 1 1/2 times my exercise goal. This morning, it’s just loading time the dishwasher and making my gallon of tea. Do love the smell. Watching local news. Forwarding #NoRonna things on Twitter.

  4. It’s 57 heading for 64 and sunny at the moment but the widget says afternoon clouds & even showers (which I’ll believe when I see it falling). Yesterday we generated 18.2 KWHs and the m-t-d at 321.4 is on track for 400 and has a bit more cushion.

    The orange cranberry nut muffin bread I baked yesterday is indeed very yummy. And may even last the 2 weeks it’s supposed to. LOL. I’ve managed my Sunday cleaning chores, hands & back protesting and groggy from less than 3.5 hours of sleep. Now I’d best get to my boosting chores. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Palm Sunday morning, Moosekind! Lovely and sunny in Ashburn, but the temperature is 37 F. and the wind is blowing again. Ugh. Our high will be 54 F. at 5 p.m.

    Just finished watching the Christian Interfaith Palm Sunday service on the in-house TV channel, only because one of my writers (who was a preacher before he retired) wrote and delivered the sermon. He did a magnificent job of bringing that first Palm Sunday to life! I’ll have to write and tell him so.

    I rested really well yesterday, didn’t do a THING. Today a DVD of “Oklahoma!” will be delivered (I hope), so we’ll watch that tonight. There would have been an easier way to watch it, but Dearly hates Amazon.

    Dearly is spoiling me! He brought me early morning tea in bed again. Yesterday afternoon he had to rescue Younger Son, whose car wouldn’t start. DIL and Nora were in Richmond, Virginia, for the volleyball trials or something. Anyway, he’s letting Son use our car for a couple of days so he can look for a new one. Friday and Saturday evenings Son works from 5 to 10 p.m. as a sushi chef because his main job brings in a very low salary. Sniff.

    Well, that’s enough from me. Do you know this poem by G. K. Chesterton? It’s stupendous:

    The Donkey

    BY G. K. CHESTERTON

    When fishes flew and forests walked
    And figs grew upon thorn,
    Some moment when the moon was blood
    Then surely I was born.

    With monstrous head and sickening cry
    And ears like errant wings,
    The devil’s walking parody
    On all four-footed things.

    The tattered outlaw of the earth,
    Of ancient crooked will;
    Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
    I keep my secret still.

    Fools! For I also had my hour;
    One far fierce hour and sweet:
    There was a shout about my ears,
    And palms before my feet.

    As I told my writers, no matter how downtrodden and despised a being may be, that being may have experienced a magnificent moment in life, one which ennobled him or her.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. Good morning. We’re getting some nice rain. Not enough, but we’ll take it. Just a walk this morning. I definitely want the aid of a treadmill for 7 minutes running. Anyway, I see the political world is the same as ever. I hope the backlash against NBC’s latest hire actually accomplishes something.

  7. Monday Meese. 26 here in Kingston, going up to a sunny 50.

    Paying attention to Angela Alsobrooks campaign in MD:

    Puerto Rico

    • Angela Alsobrooks—YOU GO, GIRL!

      I do hope she gets elected. Of course, she has to defeat billionaire David Drone in the primary. He’s a Dem only because the Rethug spot was already taken.

      As a Virginian, I appreciate having nice old Democratic Maryland across the river. AND they have their first Black governor in history!

  8. It’s 54 heading for 62, dark and raining. Not hard but steady. We’ve gotten just over an inch since it started sometime after midnight. The lights are on and the PV system isn’t. The rain’s supposed to clear off this afternoon so hopefully we’ll get something today. Yesterday we got 9.7 KWHs and the m-t-d at 330 is still on track for 400 with enough to spare that I think we still will be even with diddly today. We are already over our “at least” goal for March (326) so that’s good.

    Talked with one of my sisters and my brother last night. Together as he’s visiting her right now. I enjoyed it very much but am embarrassed by the reason. I’d gotten so caught up with worrying about cats I didn’t get the twins’ birthday cards mailed and since I always send them birthday cards they were worried. Their 65th birthday too. I’m ashamed of myself. I’m not going to mail anything today, it would get wet and probably torn up in the sorting machine, but I’ll get something out to them tomorrow.

    Otherwise nothing particularly new. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  9. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! Another beautiful, bone-dry day in Ashburn, but never mind. Sunny and windy, so I’ll walk inside. There will be a music rehearsal tonight, so I’ll get to see the Full Moon! I wish She had a nicer name than the “Worm Moon,” but one supposes the earthworms appreciate it.

    Younger Son and DIL, who have the week off, will come to tea today to return our car. That means Dearly and I will be able to go to the barbershop tomorrow. We had to get rid of our beloved truck when we moved here.

    We watched the 1955 movie of “Oklahoma!” last night. I was bored, bored, BORED by the women dancing in their underwear, and by Laurey’s dream of Parisian can-can dancers. She was supposedly living in the Oklahoma territory of 1907, so how would she know about can-can girls? Also, it was not very nice of Curly to visit Jud in the smokehouse and suggest that Jud hang himself on the meat hook. Reminded me of Putie defenestrating *his *rivals. But then, I’m an old grouch.

    Natasha’s blue beret arrived in the mail. She may wear it to the UU dinner Friday night. I’m afraid for her to show up at rehearsal again, because I don’t think the Director likes her.

    Time to get moving, Moosekind. Wishing everyone at the Pond a good day and I hope you all get to see Herself shining in the black velvet night tonight!

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 42 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 61. Partly sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday we had very brief glimpses of the sun in between rain, light rain, drizzle, hail and general cloudiness. We expect the desert Spring to return by Wednesday. I am hoping we have enough clearing to see the now waning moon while she is still very bright tonight – we last saw her on Saturday but she was not quite full.

    What on earth was NBC thinking by hiring Ronna McDaniel? Did they just want to “own” a news cycle, even in a negative way? Do they think she will simply stop lying – and showing her contempt for democracy and the rule of law – now that she is on their payroll? What an embarrassment and a complete self-own – there is no demographic that was clamoring to see a self-loathing woman who changed her name to please her dumpster-fire boss and helped him in his attempt to overturn an election. NBC shall join CNN on my list of “no clicks, no shares.”

    I got two projects done over the weekend, finishing up the most important one this morning before dawn. It turns out that a lot of people are taking Holy Week off so there is little urgency for the other projects. I have one I want to get done because I am sick of it sitting on my desk and will turn my attention to it after breakfast.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning, 48 and cloudy outside my windows today. The grey skies and my grumpy mood are not a good duo so I’m going to try to take a nap and hope for a better outlook when I wake up. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning. Slept in, have set reminders about going to the gym later. Yesterday was exhausting, just tons of work every minute I was there. For now, I’m watching astronomy & eating breakfast. Loved Rachel just reaming Ronna last night as an enabler of fascism. Lawrence was also pretty pissed. He asked about the name change: how did you explain that to your kids?

  13. Good Tuesday morning, Meese. Dearly is making coffee, so the delicious aroma is permeating the air. Outside it’s 36 F. and completely cloudy, BUT I saw Herself last night, and She was lovely. I agree that “Snowcrust Moon” is a much nicer name than “Worm Moon.” I’m not a fan of squirmy creatures.

    Nothing much to say except that I haven’t been near the gym in ages. It seems I have only so much energy, and I have to save it for rehearsals. I do wonder how this whole musical is going to happen. We’re all so ancient that some people simply cannot remember their lines, and—gulp—the new musical director is so absent-minded she forgets to show up for the music rehearsals! The first music director ended up in the hospital, the second one was on loan, and now this one can’t be bothered to show up? It doesn’t need a crystal ball to foretell disaster.

    Younger Son, DIL, and young Karl came to tea yesterday. DIL was doing exercises against the wall and with my free weights. It seems she has to undergo physical therapy after years of hunching over a computer. Karl imparted the information that he does not want to spend his working years hunched over a computer. Perhaps he’ll build rockets—that’s his favorite hobby now, building them out of Legos.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, this cloudy, cold, not-very-inviting March day.

  14. It’s 32 (windchill 22) heading for 49 and overcast. Not so dark as yesterday. The PV system is on and the lights are off. But that’s about all you can say for it. Yesterday we generated 3.1 KWHs. The m-t-d at 333.85 is still on track for 400 but it won’t be by sundown if we don’t generate more than we did yesterday.

    Today is my older son’s 53rd birthday. Time does keep tromping on if not exactly fly. In the Sikh tradition one celebrates one’s birthday by throwing a party at gurdwara to thank the community for their support, both past and future. So I’m giving him money for his birthday to help him do that. I still have enough of my tax refund to do that and I want to thank that community too. They have definitely given my son support on many levels during some really trying times.

    I’ve got to go to the grocery store today and also do laundry. Which may or may not use up the last of this season’s firewood. So I’d best get to my boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, 48 and partly cloudy outside my windows today. I basically slept the day away yesterday so I hope I can do something more interesting today. I’m used to having gardening thoughts and tasks to do this time of year but that’s on hold for now. I know I need to make some reality based changes to how I live here but it’s not easy. As always, my best wishes to all.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 61. Partly cloudy skies with a chance for thunderstorms.

    It is just barely morning and I got back from some errands and now I need to have lunch and watch a taped basketball game.

    See all y’all later!

  17. As a women’s basketball fan – seeing this was very upsetting

    (Idaho) March Madness

  18. Good morning. Didn’t get in my workout yesterday — someone asked for a callback after 4:30 and of course they didn’t answer when I did. So I’m going to take a long lunch today and go to the gym then. For now, I’m getting ready for work, waiting for my astronomy show to start. Loved the reaction to Ronna getting let go from NBC, though why they thought hiring her was a good idea….

  19. Good rainy Wednesday morning, Moosekind! I’m wildly happy because (1) it’s raining, and another half-inch would put us an inch over normal; (2) there was a HUGE Democratic win in Alabama, of all places; and (3) for once, the old Beach Boys hit, “Help me, Ronna*” turned into “Get outta here, Ronna.”

    It’s 47 F. here and by dose is drippig. It bust be allergies, because I don’t have a cold. I just took an allergy pill.

    I’ve stopped masking when I leave this campus but perhaps that’s a mistake. Darling Daughter and Hubby came back from the wedding in Boston with COVID! We’ll never get rid of it. I’ve asked for the latest Covid jab, so any day now I should be hearing a summons.

    What else…rehearsal tonight and tomorrow night as Friday is Good Friday. (Note to self: buy some more hot cross buns.)

    Dearly sleeps more and more, although when awake he’s as perky as ever. Yesterday we went to the barbershop and got haircuts. We also went out to dinner as we didn’t care for the offerings here. Tonight I’ll either have to cook at home or get food at lunchtime to heat up later. One never knows how long it will take to get something from the restaurants in the evening.

    I know it’s really, “Help me, Rhonda.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • I am trying to find a Pfizer booster because the Moderna shots knock me out for a few days. I need to get my shot soon because I have a trip scheduled for late April (to a red state) that will require air travel. A friend of my daughter traveled late last year fully masked on all her flights and in the terminals and still got COVID. It is there and for people who are at risk of getting sick, it must be frustrating.
