Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

  1. Good morning meese. 68 degrees with a projected high of 86 and 100% humidity. Feels like I’m back in Singapore. 😊

    Had a very enjoyable chat with bfitz and her friend/neighbor yesterday followed by some online adventures. Today should be interesting too and I’m looking forward to it. Even doing laundry. 😂

  2. Already sticky & warm & tomorrow will be more so. Yesterday I bought groceries and made breakfast for the week and 4 days’ worth of fruit bowls. Alarm was soooo early this morning after the long weekend. Here’s City of Blinding Lights from the 2nd Chicago show.

  3. Good morning, Moosekind, and it’s another cloudy day. The current temperature in Ashburn is 66 F., going up to 82 F. later. I’m not sure whether rain is forecast or not. It certainly looks as if it might rain.

    Will be spending the day two counties away in Arlington, Virginia. Elder Son’s nanny is on vacation this week, so Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday the grandparents are taking it in turns to provide child care. Mr. Toddler, who will be three years old on Lammas Eve, will attend what used to be called “nursery school” in September. MONA (the “Mothers of North Arlington,” a name that convulses my DIL because of its pomposity) recommended the nursery school.

    Got tired of thinking about my stupid problems, so last night I actually did a little work on the book, for the first time since January! Payday is Friday, so I hope Dearly Beloved will be moved to hire a carpet cleaner. That will facilitate the creative process as The Smell is confined to the carpet in my office.

    Our place is looking better. We have cleared out 90 percent of the boxes. My office is habitable; the dog’s new, larger bed fits exactly into the frame of the French door. The other French door opens to the balcony. It’s nice to sit here typing and looking out at the woods.

    Is it just me, or are things relatively quiet on the political scene? Do we want them to be anything but quiet?

  4. Good morning, 53 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. I woke up early, got coffee and ice packs for my knees, and went then went back to back to sleep. So I’m starting over with a fresh cup of warm coffee and hopefully, happier knees. I know I won’t live long enough to benefit from new knowledge re living with arthritis, but for my kids sake I hope something is in the works. Sorry that the state of my knees is my morning lament!

    I’ve got a fun sewing project to work on today. Our daughter will be 50 yrs old (!) in June so the family will all be here to celebrate. She has requested a lunch on the patio, featuring our version of barbecued tacos with lots of fresh salsa, sangria made with RonK’s blackberry wine, and chocolate cake. So that’s the menu, and today I’ll hem the napkins made of various chilie prints and make a center opening in the table cloths because we’ll need the umbrellas for sun control. And if it rains we’ll just move indoors.

    • I hope your second attempt at starting the day went better! I would not mind a reboot – I feel like today got off on the wrong foot and my brain feels muddled. An early nap may be in my future.

  5. According to the weather thingy that’s part of my PV system, it’s 71 with 100% humidity, heading for 86 (yeah, right). Got 19.5 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 461 so 500 for the month is definitely still doable. basket’s laundry is running. Soon as it’s done we’ll hang it out then go visit the Farmers Market and wander around town a bit. :) Definitely enjoying basket being here.

    Hoping to visit a couple of local museums – the Clinton House by campus and the Shiloh up in Springdale. Local history stuff, not the “big gun” of Crystal Bridges unless he decides he wants to. Then dinner at a local BBQ place with my older son. Nice laid back sort of day. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 72 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 75. Rain is in the forecast. We set a record here for 4 days in a row over 90 in May. I don’t like the heat!

    There was not a single story in my news aggregator this morning about the Puerto Rico death toll. There were 20 stories about Roseanne Barr and her firing. This is why people despise the “news” media, it is celebrity driven and if you don’t know the celebrities, it is meaningless drivel. The things Roseanne tweeted are mild compared to some of the things that the right-wing – some of them elected officials – spewed during the Obama presidency. As much as I dislike her, I can’t help but think that her quick firing – and being kicked to the curb by Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity – has to do with her being a woman. Why any woman would be a Republican, knowing the misogyny that drives the party and its leaders, is a mystery.

    Time is running out on the Mueller probe if he wants to get indictments out before they can impact the midterms. If they hit in the fall, they will be called political. If they come out after the election, they will be called political! If he needs the Supreme Court to rule on something, he only has until June 30th after which the justices scatter for vacations. That the stories leaking out seem more focused may be an indication that things are coming together.

      • That photo of the grinning Rosello taking a selfie with the sociopathic paper towel thrower is enraging! I hope it is used in campaign ads against him. He sucked up to people who despise him and the citizens of Puerto Rico and he provides comfort to their oppressors.

  9. Good Woden’s Day morning, Meese! It’s cloudy again today, with actual rain expected in the afternoon. The current temperature in Ashburn is 68 F., with a high of 82 F. later today.

    Yesterday was fun but exhausting. It takes nearly an hour to drive the 27 miles from here to elder son’s house. Mr. Toddler did not want to play in the park after I took him there. “Let’s go to Mommy’s house,” he said. He continues to astound me with his verbal ability and his brilliance.

    We had a good time playing ridiculous games until it was time for his nap, after which I was free to go. When I arrived home I was so tired I took a nap of my own, having got up much too early.

    Mr. Preschooler, whom I’ll see tomorrow, is four years old today! We were all ecstatic when he was born. He’s adorable, although like many children he’s easily upset when he doesn’t get his own way.

    Just confirmed my hotel reservation in Corpus Christi. I’ve posted a Litha story so y’all won’t miss me too much this weekend (snort). The chances of actually being able to check into the Moose are slim while I’m away, unless I can get to the site on the hotel computer.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and a Bronx cheer to Roseanne for deflecting attention from the disaster in PR.

      I have gotten bogged down in project work and Life and have not had time to test my iPad to see if there may be a trick to getting Safari to allow Moose logins. I assume you can read the blog – just can’t log in – so I will report back my findings in a comment after I have time to research it. Maybe we will see you after all!!

Good morning meese. 69 with predicted high of 86 and 92% humidity for Arkansas, where we will be for a bit before heading up to Sedalia, Missouri where the weather is 69 with a projected high of 86 for today and 91% humidity. It will get as hot as 93 with 30% chance of rain this weekend. As I just told bfitz I hope it doesn’t rain while we’re outdoors!

    • Basket, my friend, no wonder the weather reminds you of our beloved Singapore!

      If it weren’t for those air-conditioned “tall malls” and places like that, Singaporeans would have to walk about starkers. It’s just too hot and humid.

      • We survived before air conditioning and will continue to survive even if we grumble. 🤣

        • Yes, well, you know what the late Lee Kuan Yew thought—that air conditioning was the greatest invention of the 20th century.

          As for me, I think the greatest invention was The Pill.

          It all depends on one’s point of view, I suppose. ;)

  12. 64 with 99% humidity and sunny at the moment although we got rain before dawn and there appears to be more in the forecast. Got 20 KWHs yesterday and we’re at 481 so if we get a day as good as yesterday we’ll crest 500 by this evening, otherwise tomorrow (unless we have a “black as night” rain front move through – which is not in the forecast). So that’s a YAY for May. :)

    basket and I wandered around Fayetteville yesterday – got strawberries at the Farmers Market, looked at a few historic buildings, checked out some murals and other “public art” both downtown & at the library (a certified silver LEED building), had Thai for lunch then visited the Clinton House Museum. Came home for to rest a bit, then had dinner with my son at a local BBQ place – stayed until they were trying to close the dining room just chatting. I hope some of our storied didn’t freak basket out too much. Some of my son’s freaked ME out. LOL. Leaving shortly so we can visit a museum we’d meant to yesterday but ran out of time on our way to Sedalia. I’m taking my computer so I expect to be able to check in while I’m gone.   13. Good morning, 55 and partly cloudy in Bellingham. Seems I may have a new morning routine, coffee, and ice for my knees. It helped yesterday so I’m doing the same today. I’ll go to the pool soon and then see what happens.

    • Good advice from Danny. By now it should be plain that the “personality” is purely a distraction – and there is no “fix” for that, he will be a vulgar talking yam for as long as he is on the earthly plane. But we can look at the Republican policies and get riled and get to the polls and vote for those who will provide the “checks” part of checks and balances.

    • Thanks for the link to the article about the voting rights court case. This comment is insane!

      The appeals court in January issued a decision, rejecting the appeal, stating the plaintiffs lack legal standing to challenge overseas voting laws.

      They aren’t overseas voting laws – they are United States territory voting laws!!

      I think someone should sue that U.S. citizens living in U.S. territories are deprived of representation because they can’t vote in presidential elections. Let’s give them some electoral votes and see if they get more than a roll of paper towels tossed at them when they are in crisis.

      I have been retweeting a lot of the death toll tweets so that it doesn’t fall off people’s radar.

    • Reporters on the ground in Puerto Rico knew the death toll numbers were very high, Why didn’t anyone listen to them? It

      No one listened for the same reason no one listens to women: they’re not white, English-speaking males. Those are the only people that matter to the media and the mis-administration.

    Good news out of Virginia and an example of what can happen to a state when a blue wave hits it! Medicaid expansion will give 300,000 Virginians access to health care and all because people knocked on doors and called, got out the vote and got out and voted. Heady stuff.

    A quick scan of the headlines shows that the ADHD president* has started a dozen messes around the globe with his impulsiveness and upended U.S. trade and U.S. foreign policy. Turns out trade wars are not “easy to win” and foreign policy is difficult when you have hollowed out the State Department and have no one with the expertise to conduct diplomacy. Running the United States of America turns out to be a little more complicated than running a business where the hired help is only family members. Whoda thunk?

    Last day of May, too much to do.

  16. Sleepy this morning, even though I only woke up 15 minutes before my alarm. Shouldn’t make that big a difference. Blech, sticky & hot — 99 again today. I used City of Blinding Lights for energy yesterday, so today I’ll use one of the new Snow Patrol ones — Empress, which is happy & bouncy & about the Resistance — I’m sure of it.

  17. In Sedalia, MO it’s 73 heading for 80 (ha!) and rumbling thunder. Hopefully if it does rain, it will finish up before we head for the old downtown area where all the symposia and concerts are held. Several are in outdoor venues. Well, yesterday my PV system generated 21 KWHs and we reached 502! W00T!! Today is gravy. :)

    I think I got dehydrated yesterday (that or no coffee) & ended up with a headache. We had to leave last night’s concert at intermission. I’m seriously hoping/working on that not happening again. I do not want to spoil basket’s trip/event. He’s been coming to these for years and knows lots of folks. The music is fun – ragtime always is – the concert last night was more Eubie Blake and “newer” composers than Scott Joplin showing how much life it still has. Not history, just historic. Anyway, I need to get some breakfast soon and heaven knows when I’ll get back to the computer. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  18. Good morning, Moosekind! This Thor’s Day morning hasn’t produced any thunder so far, but we’ve had some rain. It’s very gray and gloomy at the moment. The good part: the plants on the screened porch look very perky from being rained on during the night and early this morning. The current temp. in Ashburn is 66 F., going up to 81 F. later.

    Boy howdy, Trey Gowdy! (R-Benghazi, as Dana Milbank puts it.) Now that he’s leaving he’s suddenly started sounding almost like a human instead of a robot-fanatic. Have always loathed him, and wish him nothing but male pattern baldness and one mid-life crisis after another.

    The Washington Poop for once made the right decision and endorsed Jennifer Wexton for the Democratic primary. I can’t wait to vote for her on June 12! Last time the 10th District was in contention, the Poop endorsed The Woman Comstock, in spite of her many failings. Dear Goddess, I want that woman out of the 10th!

    Not much news except that yrs truly stayed up way too late last night reading a thriller, consequently getting only four hours’ sleep. I wish I wouldn’t do things like that, but there it is: no will power.

    Will spend the day getting ready to fly tomorrow. Hope it’s a good day for all at the Pond and beyond!

    • Trey Gowdy still wins the award for ugliest man in Congress – and he has many challengers although Trent Franks resigning gave him a clearer path. I know people cannot help their looks but surely his hair style – which is a large part of his grossness – is optional. I will always remember him as Sweat Boy for the way he looked after his 10 hour grilling of Hillary Clinton. That he is trolling Trump on the FBI story is hilarious but I don’t doubt for a moment that he is happy to have helped weaken our candidate and install a corrupt ignoramus in the White House.

  19. Good morning, 56, breezy and partly cloudy in Bellingham. A quick twitter read tells me to try to avoid doing so again! I’m going to take my padded knee friendly gardening bench to the patio and clean up the remainder of the spring bulbs and the faded blooms from the bergenia. The climbing rose bush is in full bloom so I’ll be in good company.

    Yesterday listed to a panel of Democrats running for Congress in my district – NY19. The all say they are progressives

    I will not vote for either of the two Bernie Bros. I’m going to vote for the only one who did not say Nancy Pelosi should get out of the way ( a question they got asked) to make room for “new ideas”
