Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 17th through May 23rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 55 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 57. The forecast calls for rain.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

    “Doing what feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy — that’s how little kids think. Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grown-ups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way — which is why things are so screwed up.” https://nyti.ms/2X7pzTg

    • Sorry! For some reason, your Puerto Rico comment ended up in moderation. WordPress version 5.4 turned out to be a bigger update than a normal dot release – a lot of things changed behind the scenes. You are an Editor and your comments should never go into moderation! Usually I am up posting at the same time you are – on Sundays, I am generally off line. I will keep an eye on it this week.

    • rec’d & shared – love that story about the song – singing it & her neighbor loved it….

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! Here I sit, full of blackberries, waffles, and coffee on another cloudy morning. It’s going to be cloudy all week, which means that my spirits will be overcast too. Right now in Ashburn it’s 62 F., on its way to 71 F. Our two lovely days, Friday and Saturday, are history now.

    Nothing good to think about this morning, I fear. With Thing’s occupancy of the White House, his racist base has been given free rein to exercise its nastiest, most white supremacist and woman-hating instincts. I LOATHE Ronnie Ray-Gun for vilifying government! People who hate the “gummint” taking away their “freedumbs” should live on an island with no sewage system, no hospitals, no taxes, and nothing to eat except fish and coconuts. It would serve them bloody well right.

    Rant over. I’ve put off changing the sheets on the bed until tomorrow so I can concentrate on laundry today. Also, I need to concentrate on writing, as the June 1 deadline looms ever nearer.

    Wishing everyone a nice, peaceful Sunday. Do stay away from the news.

    • When I went to my food co-op yesterday, they not only had the sourdough sandwich bread that I went there for, but this lovely sour cream-dill bread….. omg it is sooooooo good. I’m having it toasted, with almond butter. Ambrosia, manna, nirvana….. whatever other words describe heavenly food.

  5. So happy to be back online. Friday & Saturday were very long days. Anyway, hi! I’m doing laundry & watching Ali Velshi. He showed a rocket launch & was geeking out because rocket launches are great; and of course there are several people on the hashtag talking about wasting money. I’m resisting asking how much they like cell phones, GPS, weather radar, cordless power tools, etc. Anyway, happy Sunday.

    and I was unable to resist, I put a tweet with a link to the NASA page listing all the benefits that have come from space exploratiion

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} – 👍👍👍👍 on the link to the NASA page listing all the benefits. Momma used to talk about that – no “links” back then (“back then” in the 1970s – LOL – she walked on in 1989) – about all those benefits, the ones we knew about then, coming from the space program. She let us stay/kept us home from school for the launches from Alan Shepard on. I still remember the ‘real’ countdowns – “we have ignition” then “we have liftoff” – and always choke up with the “Hello Houston” handoff from Canaveral to Houston Manned Space Center. (Heck, I’m tearing up as I type this. 😁) moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • Re this:

      He showed a rocket launch & was geeking out because rocket launches are great; and of course there are several people on the hashtag talking about wasting money.

      Ha, anotherdemocrat! When we were in England in 1968, little Lulu (of “To Sir with Love” fame) was interviewed on TV. She commented on a rocket launch in America and deplored the waste of money when there are so many hungry people in the world.

      Great Goddess, she was and is a citizen in a country FULL of cathedrals built in the Middle Ages, when millions of serfs were born into hunger, disease, squalor, and misery until they died! “Nasty, brutish, and short,” said Hobbes of their lives. The hypocrisy of stupid people never ceases to astound me. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say my mind is permanently and irrevocably boggled!

  6. It’s 65 heading for mid 70s and the rain is tapering off. I hope it takes the clouds with it. At least there’s more light than we had Friday! And in fact have already generated more than half what we did all day Friday. Yesterday we got 9 KWHs and the m-t-d is 211 so that part’s good. Or at least OK. This is being a cloudy “year” – all I have to do is look at the quarterly data on my PV system to see that. Objective numbers that basically explain an underlying depression and malaise dragging us down and making it harder to fight the evil we’re awash in. It’s not our imagination. We need the sunshine and we aren’t getting it. It’s gonna take more personal energy – swimming against the tide – to get where we need to go. I think the first step to being able to do what we need to do is to know that. It’s not weakness or cowardice – it is harder to swim against a strong tide. Especially so when we’re hauling others with us. (& if we’re the ones being hauled, our job is to make the haulage easier however we can.) But knowing what we’re up against means we don’t give up, we adjust to circumstances. As with my folks’ generation, we see our duty and we do it.

    At the moment I’m doing internet instead of housework. The cloudiness seriously saps my physical as well as mental energy. But I have mixed the sausage stuff and put it in the fridge to meld. I’ll visit Dee’s post – probably play the music clips while I get up an do a little more of the housework. (I can do everything but the vacuuming that way. LOL) Worried about Amelia and Aji (& others) – for various reasons but all of them come down to money. I could get a dozen or more people on solid ground & able to take it from there with as “little” as $100K. But I don’t have $100K. I’m gonna be scraping to pay my insurance premiums – all of which are due next month – after I’ve covered the $2K deductible to get my roof done. Which may or may not happen next week. Depending on the insurance adjustor and the roofing project manager reaching an agreement on the numbers. That’s the first issue. Second is materials delivery by Tuesday. (And of course the sun actually being out like it’s supposed to be next week.) Anyway, we shall see what we shall see. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 56 and cloudy in Bellingham. Regardless of the rain we’re having lunch on the patio today with Lisa and her family. We’ll add another umbrella so we be safely spaced while we barbecue teriyaki chicken (Ryan’s favorite) and a steak for Heidi. It’s her 14th birthday this weekend so she gets all the steak!

    Best wishes to all on this rain or shine day in May.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 50 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Showers all day! No complaints – the warm weather last week and the all day rains have turned everything green; yesterday it was like everything just bloomed overnight. The lilacs’ scented blossoms made my afternoon walk more pleasant.

    I tried to stay news-free yesterday – fortunately it was a light news day and there were no breaking news emails coming across my smartphone. I did catch the Occupant of the Oval Office going full middle-school: he gets called out for his incompetence, he has to call President Obama incompetent. Out of all the things that right-wing claims about the Obama Administration, the one least likely to “stick” is that it was somehow incompetent. Their complaint was usually that he and the people he chose to run the government were too competent, actually applying the laws and enforcing the regulations. The “trains ran on time” during the Obama years and global pandemics were stamped out before they reached our shores. Good luck with that tack. Every time he mentions Barack Obama’s name, he reminds everyone of what good government looks like and how lacking he is in every regard in leadership and competency. Joe Biden is not my first choice for president but he is the candidate most likely to win if the theme is “let’s get back to normal.”

    Today, I will be working on putting together a plan for finishing off the month of May on a high-note – 14 days. I have some projects that have been deferred since the middle of March because I did not want to disrupt my clients who are working from home. Many of them will return to their workplaces on May 26th, some may return sooner. I also have some computer and accounting projects for myself that have been put off to when I could afford down-time and I will set up a schedule for those. I can no longer afford to spend any time worrying about COVID-19 transmission – I will assume that 80% of the people we will now come in contact with will have been exposed to the virus because they know people who spend time in bars and who are ignorant and/or anti-science. It is probably a better assumption in the long run! We will avoid crowds and crowded places, insist that the places we do business maintain safe practices, and wash our hands after we do venture out.

    See all y’all later!

    • No complaints – the warm weather last week and the all day rains have turned everything green; yesterday it was like everything just bloomed overnight. The lilacs’ scented blossoms made my afternoon walk more pleasant.

      How blissful, Jan! Our lilacs are blooming by the dog park and they’re nearly finished. I still enjoy walking that way to breathe in their fragrance while they last.

  9. Monday Meese. 58 going up to 67 with rain here in the NY Catskills.

    Taking my husband to see a pain management specialist today – (no drugs involved) since he still has no use of left arm/hand and severe pain.

    Puerto Rico

    • Sending lots of Healing Energy to your husband. I’d light a real candle for him but I’m out. So virtual ones will have to do. 🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯 Healing Energy & {{{HUGS}}} to you.

    • I meant to sent healing, pain-free thoughts to your husband earlier. I hope the doctor visit went well.

  10. Hi, Dee, sorry to hear your husband is still in pain. Hope the doctor can help him.

    Yes, let’s invoke the Chupacabra to visit Thing! It would serve him right.

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s another gray, ugly day out there. At the moment it’s 57 F. in Ashburn, going up to 66 F. I wouldn’t mind the cloudiness as much if it would simply rain and get it over with, but it just hangs there. It was like this yesterday too, so I didn’t feel like going for a walk.

    Monty is growling because he wants to go out. Every morning like clockwork he waits until I’ve poured a cup of covfefe and sit down to check in here, then starts agitating to go out. I saw my neighbor yesterday out in the courtyard with Raspberry, her poodle, and she wants to divorce her dog too. Even Dearly is ready to divorce the dog since all he wants to do on his walks is eat worms.

    Today we have to drive the tomato stakes into the ground and tie the tomatoes to them. We also need to plant the marigolds around the tomatoes because they ward off pests. I forget what kind, exactly, but yes, pests. Also on the agenda is repotting the basil and lavender. Soon I’ll have a delightful-smelling screened porch with the lavender, mint, and brand-new rosemary.

    Have been wondering why I frequently feel sick in the mornings. At age 136 last birthday, I’m fairly sure I’m not preggers. I know that nausea is one of the signs of “IT,” but I can still smell and taste. The ways of the human body are mysterious to me.

    I’m worried about Uncle Joe because he chooses not to fight back against Thing’s insane allegations—remember John Kerry and the Swiftboat?—and after reading the front-page article in this morning’s WaPo about the dumb but free people in Georgia, I feel that coronavirus is here to stay. All those people drinking wine in the sunlight and crowding together maskless in bars are gonna git it.

    Will continue to hope that none of us gits it. Everyone stay safe and well!

    • {{{Diana}}} – thank you for the gift. I just got it. It’s very much appreciated.

      Off hand I’d say the morning nausea is a blood sugar issue. If it goes away once you’ve eaten something – or even had a small glass of juice – that would be it.

      Joe’s responding. As is his “team”. MSM is owned by birchers and they aren’t airing/printing it. Any more than they did Hillary’s fighting back. Kerry did respond/fight back. MSM didn’t carry it. & yes, COVID’s here to stay.

      Again, thank you. Just thank you. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • You’re welcome, angel! Yes, actually, the nausea does go away as soon as I’ve had breakfast. I’m a bit puzzled as to why I have this particular problem. It’s not as if I’m frenetically active or anything. Oh, well, I’ll just have to put up with it.

        It’s just puzzling that it chose now to manifest itself.

        • Off hand I’d say too many carbs and not enough protein at your evening meal. Carbs burn off fast and drop your blood sugar levels. Protein’s a slower burn and stays with you longer. You said you’ve been overeating the carbs since you’ve been quarantined. That would do it. moar {{{HUGS}}}

          • Bfitz, they give us beaucoup des carbs for our dinners here. Not only is it bad for our weight, their food causes us to have a certain unfortunate affliction that I am too delicately minded to mention here. It’s extremely weakening, I must say.

            As there is no alternative, we simply have to put up with it. One thing I certainly must do is get out for a walk today. That would help with the weight problem, at least.

          • Can the errand-running service pick up a rotisserie chicken for you or something like that? So you could add protein? Sounds like one of their dinners could be split into 2 meals with the addition of sufficient protein. Do the best you can. Healing Energy & {{{Diana}}}

  12. I got in a 30 minute walk, now I’m working. Hot weather coming, if I’m going to get in a walk it has to be early. I’m definitely not going to the gym. Anyway, happy Monday y’all!

    • Early walks are good. I remember that part of living in TX very well. Have fun working. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. It’s 55 going to 73 and sunny. It’s supposed to stay that way today which would be nice. We generated 20 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 231. That’s banking energy and that will have to do.

    The Aspen guy wants $1K more than the insurance company will pay. I’ve emailed him and asked if he can do it for that. If so, great. We go forward with him. If not, let me know ASAP so I can go to my 2nd choice. I haven’t heard back from him and I’m gonna try to call him if I don’t in the next 20 minutes. I’ve got new water stains on the den ceiling so the roof is actually leaking and I’ve got to get this done. I haven’t called my 2nd choice yet but I do have 3 references for them (I asked around for a back up plan over the weekend). We shall see what we shall see. Quickly I hope.

    Evil Ones being evil. We keep on keepin’ on. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody, to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Well, I reached Joe. He says they’re doing my roof for what the insurance pays. That he just needs to get some paperwork from my adjustor. Which she said she’d already sent. There’s a “he said, she said” going on here that I’m not happy about. To a large extent I do trust her more (she’s not trying to sell me anything) – but Joe did do a much more thorough inspection than the insurance guy (who left off a lot and underpriced more on his report to her). At this point I’m going with Joe/Aspen…but I’m beginning to be sorry I didn’t go with the other one in the first place. If I had it to do over… (Except of course with the same set of circumstances and same amount of knowledge, I’d make the same decision.) One more thing we shall see what we shall see.

  14. Good morning, 51 and sunny in Bellingham. We enjoyed our family lunch yesterday, but being together while keeping our distance is unsettling. And serving food safely requires even more thought. It’s also a surprise to see how scruffy we all look….I’m not the only one with grey hair showing and in need of a haircut!

    More unsettling news re COVID…….The coronavirus is most infectious before people even know they have it, UW virologist says

    How many SARS-CoV-2 viruses does it take to start an infection in a person? How many viruses does a person breathe out when they are infectious? Those questions still has no definitive answers, Jerome said.

    “You’ll get a lot of opinions on this,” he said. “Your likelihood of getting infected is almost a roll of the dice. But the number of dice you get, and how many times you get to roll them, is determined by your circumstances.”

    Best wishes to all as we find our way through another day.

    • …not the only one with grey hair showing and in need of a haircut!

      I hear you, girlfriend! Remember the cartoon character “L’il Iodine?” I look just like her except with gray hair rather than red.

      Oh, lawks, I’m tired of looking so scruffy! But I do not want to die for a haircut.

      • They will be officially opening up here a week from tomorrow with information being passed on to businesses about safe practices. I have a dental appointment and when the county says it is safe I will get a haircut. I think the haircut shouldn’t be that much of a problem – just don’t yak! :) We just need hand signals for “a little more off the top please.”

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 50 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 63. It will be cloudy all day.

    I despise the media and its shallowness. With all that is going on, what they see fit to report on is that geese honking on Joe Biden’s virtual speech “marred it.” If we are going to choose presidents based on how well they “internet”, we are a stupid people. Actually, it is well established that we are a stupid people – I just hope we can do just one smart thing this year, on November 3rd, and rid ourselves of this dastardly administration.

    By the way, Nancy Pelosi pointing out that Donald Trump is morbidly obese and should not be taking drugs that can kill people who are overweight is not “fat shaming.” Fat shaming would be calling him an ignorant fat pile of human garbage which she would not do.

    I am finding it difficult going from 0 to 60 in ramping up my project work and will need to cut back a bit and choose smaller chunks. I hope my brain has not atrophied from disuse!

    See all y’all later!
