Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 24th through March 30th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Friday Meese. 46 degrees and raining here in NYS going up to 54.

Donald Trump does another one of his lie about and insult Puerto Rico numbers.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 34 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 52. Sunny this morning giving way to clouds and evening showers. We are cooling off but might see 60 by the end of next week!

Adam Schiff was on fire yesterday, reminding people what we already know about the Trump campaign’s connections to Russia and that while Robert Mueller may not think it rises to the level of a chargeable crime, there was plenty of “there” there. I am not sure it is very wise for Individual 1 to claim that “the Russia hoax is over” and that he “won” because there are a number of other investigations going on and now his convenient scapegoat is supposedly vanquished.

Good lord, Brexit is a mess! NPR had interviews with people in rural England who voted Leave because they were angry about immigrants – not realizing that it would destroy their economy. Sound familiar? At least we have wrested control of part of our government back and can mitigate the damage being done by the drooling dotard. Their idiotic PM David Cameron set in motion a process that will cause untold harm to the UK and which their Parliament seems unable or unwilling to put an end to. There is no soft Brexit, only stopping the process or crashing and burning.

    See all y’all later!

  3. I got the “log in disabled” message – on every device I tried, even my kindle – which I don’t think I’ve ever logged in to the Moose on…. Anyway, I tried again after waiting 30 minutes & here I am. so – hi!

Very happy about Adam Schiff’s speech yesterday, and the attention it got. Loved Lawrence’s commentary last night, wish the MSNBC site didn’t cut it short. Anyway, yay Friday. I usually try for bouncy energetic music in the morning, to keep me awake, but with all the awfulness in the news, and missing my best friend on her birthday weekend, I’m going for the comfort of Life On Earth. Love the video, with spacemen and babies.

This shouldn’t need to be so f-ing hard
    This is life on earth
    It’s just life on earth
It doesn’t need to be the end of you, or me
    This is life on earth
    It’s just life on earth

    • I should have time to work on this on Sunday in the wee hours. There is definitely something not right but I needed to do the first step (get all the software up to date) before I went to the second step which is tech support. The first thing that they as is “is the software up to date?”

Thank you everyone for your patience – and persistence!

  4. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s sunny-ish (lots of cloud cover) and 52 F. in Ashburn at the moment, with a predicted high of 70 F. Good. I’ll try to get out for a walk today.

Had a wonderful time yesterday with Darling Niece, who told me about everything that’s going on in her life. She looks 20 years younger than she actually is: is that owing to living a blameless life? We talked so long that I missed the Feldenkrais class, but perhaps I can go next week. I did attend my second “balance and strength” class and felt wonderful.

I’m still getting the book ready to go to the publisher, reading every single word. I’ve got to put it all together, format it, and convert it to .docx, as the publisher will take longer if I submit the mss. in Apple Pages format. It’s a tedious process, to say the least.

Have so much going on back at the ranch that I’m going to pay less attention to the minute-by-minute accounts of what Thing is doing.

My phone showed a message from Dee saying that anotherdemocrat had been locked out of the Moose this morning. I arrived here sideways by clicking on the email showing DoReMI’s Tuesday in Mooseville post (which I enjoyed very much). I still plan to eliminate my bookmark to see whether that works.

Nine o’clock already—need to eat breakfast and get dressed! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  5. It’s 58 and may or may not get to mid 60s today in Fay., AR and cloudy although not seriously dark cloudy. Weather forecast goes back and forth between whether/when we get rain and when the temps start dropping but the barometric pressure changes are definitely already happening. (Hold the Good Thought on those temp drops – current forecast has a freeze Sunday morning and my cherry tree is starting to blossom.) We generated 10.6 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 347.5 which is not bad. Not great but not bad. I’m still hoping we can get over 360 as close as we are. Over 390 is barely possible but would take 4 sunny days to do it and that’s apparently not gonna happen.

I’m home doing laundry – which is going to be hung in front of the fire inside although it’s actually warm enough to hang the clothes outside. I am not going to chance the rain. Meanwhile the Twins are driving me nuts wanting to go outside and play. I’m not going to let them until I can keep an eye on them. Partly because Charlie and Cloud want to go out when the Twins do and I certainly don’t let them unless I can be outside with them. Murf turns out to be an older kitteh – the vet estimated 9 years old which is about the same age as Cloud. My friend thinks he used up a couple of lives bluffing the neighborhood cats into thinking he’s younger and stronger than he is. Vet thinks he’s dealing with arthritis, poor baby, and that’s why he’s spending most of his day curled up on the wool blanket on my bed. Five cats are expensive. But barring anybody getting hurt of sick, I should not need the vet back for a year. I’m gonna have to shift to a less expensive kibble though. And I’m not sure what I have will last until next weekend. I may augment with grocery store kibble then do a Tractor Supply run next Friday.

Aji’s still waiting on results & what to do next. The various folks with housing issues are also waiting. & there’s a new diary out that really needs some r,r,t,c to keep it visible. She’s got 3 issues – getting a car (her plan is good if anybody in her area is going to trade in an older car – sell it to her for the trade-in allowance), tips towards a part-time job, or another doctor or medical clinic for her home medical coding business. If she/we can just get the word out…

    Anyway the washer just stopped so I need to hang the clothes (and tend the fire). Then coffee and over to Dee’s diary. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 45 and partly sunny in Bellingham. When the moon waxes and wanes it’s a comforting cycle of nature, but when arthritis does the same it’s very annoying! My knees are rebelling this morning so it looks like I’ll have a quiet day.

    Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning, Meesefolk; lawd, I wasn’t sure I’d ever get on this morning; I saw Diana’s suggested workaround but had already discarded the email. Anyhoo…37 when I got up with a very overcast high of 48 today. It’s going to be a cold, and possibly snowy weekend which is fine. I’m working tomorrow anyway, so if I can’t be outside playing, I don’t mind if it’s less-than-pleasant.

Reinforcing all the evidence of my nerdiness, I’m probably going to watch Black Panther again tonight. Watching a Marvel movie isn’t proof of nerdiness in and of itself; it’s the reason I want to rewatch the movie. I’m reading a book on slave culture, and one of the essays discusses how slaves often didn’t embrace Christianity but used it as a cover to mask the fact that many were still practicing forms of their own religion(s) from home. It seems pretty self-evident when reading about it, but for me, it was a revelation; the difference between reading about African-infused Christianity and Christianity-cloaked native religion. It makes me want to watch Black Panther again, because I’m pretty sure the scenes in the movie that are related to religious practices might resonate a bit more than they did the first time. And yes, this is indeed how my brain works…

Good day to and for all!

  8. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 39 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 43 (feels like 34). Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

The news fire hose seems to have slowed down a bit – or maybe it has finally reached the point where my brain refuses to take in any more outrage. I hope it is the former, I don’t want to become inured to it and accepting the tRumping as normal. #ThisIsNotNormal

Bill Barr appears to have blinked and will release the Mueller report in a more timely manner. He had hoped that because the mainstream media reported his summary as the Mueller Report that the pressure would be off. Thanks to the pushback from the Democratic House of Representatives and honest reporting from enough non-mainstream sites, that failed. He is now denying that he called it a “summary”! There are lots of things that Twitter gets wrong but calling out false narratives picked up and copy/pasted by the lazy press is one of the things they get right. A lot of us are still angry about 2016 and unwilling to let lies be pushed unchallenged.

The Democratic Weekly Address is by Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota discussing the climate crisis and the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on Climate Change put in place when Senate leadership refused to empanel a bipartisan committee. Nancy Pelosi’s House has been busy rolling out some new bills including a bill to shore up the Affordable Care Act. That bill does NOT have the support of people who want the health care system to collapse so that “millions will call for change.” Hey, doofuses, millions have already called for change and the Republicans in power aren’t interested. Those rejecting the incremental improvements are no better than Republicans for using the pain and deaths of tens of thousands of people to burnish their “progressive” chops. We can’t remove the safety net while we are building a better health care system.

By the way, anyone who says “Hillary Clinton should never have said that America is already great” is automatically disqualified in my mind. That is a serious misreading of the Democratic Party electorate, the people who will be voting in 2020 for our nominee; refusing to accept that Hillary won more votes will be a third rail.

    See all y’all later!

    • Regarding site issues, I am now person number 4 in the support queue and hoping to find a solution to the site login lockout problem. I think it may be related to the Moose being http versus https and why coming in from a non-http (like an email link to a post or the RSS feed) works while other methods don’t.

If you can’t get in, please try the RSS feed link which is available on the menu. Go to The Moose and choose Comment Feed. That will give you the feed using http and may get you past the issue.

      • Well, the support guy pushed an update related to security when I simply asked him about it so we may have jumped from the frying pan into the fire.

If you can’t log in this morning, try again tomorrow. I am going to have to shut down working on this for a while.

      • The second support guy reverted the site and logins are working again. Whew!

Those of you who are having the hacker login error message, could you post the bookmark you use to find the Moose? Thanks!

      • The social media plugins went nuts and I will be cleaning them up shortly. I will wait to post Fighting Back until they are fixed.

  9. Slept in, watching the news. Can’t believe the cruelty & grifter-ness of these people. They are so rich, and they have to steal even more from people who have nothing. And people cheer for him. What is wrong with this world?

I was going to go get a taco for dinner last night but my car wouldn’t start. Hoping it’s the battery. Called to find out how much to get it replaced, then checked my card balances. If that’s what’s wrong, I can cover it by splitting between 2 cards. And today already sucked, it’s Minerva’s birthday and I miss her a lot. Going for the comfort music this morning, Walk On. I really don’t know why this song is such a comfort, just that it is.

  10. Good morning, Moosekind! Very cloudy but warm today in Ashburn. At almost 10 a.m the temperature outside is 56 F., going up to almost 80 F. today! Wonder whether I can do a 3-mile walk this afternoon.

Yikes, Jan, before I read your post this morning I had already deleted the bookmark I’d been using to get here. Today I clicked on your “Fighting Back” post in an email, logged in—how wonderful that was—and now my username actually appears in the upper right corner! Haven’t seen that for a while.

Thanks for the “Fighting Back” post this morning. It makes me proud that women are taking the lead in Congress. The fact that the “herder of chickens” chooses to ignore women and even castigates Hillary voters is sufficient to damn him forever in my eyes. Meanwhile, my dream candidate is coming up with one great policy proposal after another. I make it a point to retweet and comment on her tweets.

Miss Pink Cheeks wanted to come for a sleepover but this is not a good weekend for that, what with Dearly’s cold, a race tomorrow, and my need to ready my mss. for publication.

I promised Someone, Somewhere that I was going to do housework this morning, so I’d better get on it. Wishing a good day to all!

  11. Our high for the day – 60 – was at midnight. We’re slowly dropping through the day & night to a lower below freezing than I’m happy about just before dawn tomorrow. Hold the Good Thought for my cherry tree. We’re overcast at the moment and have had enough rain that there’s standing water in the yard and the Twins haven’t been all that insistent about going out. Murf is feeling better – he’s sitting on a folded quilt on my bedside table rather than curled up on the wool blanket on my bed. Charlie and Cloud are napping, as usual for this time of day. We got a little over 8 KWHs yesterday which ain’t great but at least is over what I use in a day (average – since I ran the washer yesterday I’m not sure about that) and the m-t-d is 355.8 so we just need it to clear off enough for another 4.2 KWHs to reach 360. More (a lot more) would be nice, of course.

    We’re all waiting. Waiting for more information. Waiting for something – anything – we can do something about. Waiting for the real election cycle to start so we can start the work – opening the offices, canvassing, all the pieces parts that go into electing decent people. Waiting is hard. And frustrating. And anxiety-making when it’s not depressing. Which is partly why there is such a firehose of OMGHOF speculation on social media. sigh. But we’ll get through this, too. Meanwhile, I need more coffee. Then I’ll check & tweet out the Fighting Back and other internet stuff I do in the hopes it helps. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning, 44 and sunny in Bellingham. Thanks for all the site work Jan. I’ve been able to log in and out with no problems so I don’t have any work arounds to share. Another slow and sleepy morning for me but RonK has already been to the park with his camera. He’ll be ready for a nap before I am!

Time for coffee, take care everyone.
