Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Feb. 2nd through Feb. 8th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Not quite freezing this morning, still cold enough for a hat & sweatshirt. Supposed to be 72 this afternoon. I rarely stay up late enough for all of Lawrence O’Donnell’s show, but last night was a great one & I’m so glad I saw it. He had a segment on how Trump doesn’t understand love, how Speaker Pelosi isn’t being sarcastic when she says she prays for him… It was just all-around fantastic. Here’s a link. So, I’m sleepy this morning, but my overnight oats taste especially chocolatey & my tea is good. So that’ll do. And I have this cover of Give A Little Bit stuck in my head, so it’s overall a nice morning.

  2. Welp, the morning started lovely and sunny – a real mood booster – but the clouds have already moved back in. sigh. We never made it above freezing yesterday. We shall see if today’s predicted 49 happens. Considering the snow cover on the panels yesterday’s 1.8 KWHs wasn’t bad – m-t-d is 32.8 – but we’re falling way behind any kind of path to 200+ for the month. sigh.

    It’s breathe and remind myself “I’m all right right now” in this panic-inducing world we currently live in. But my friends…I do what I can, which isn’t much. And pray/invoke/Channel. A lot. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, 39 and raining in Bellingham. It’s still dark here, but the grey sky outside my window is a lighter shade of grey so maybe the steady rain will ease too.

I’m happy to report I have a better haircut, yay! Small accomplishment, but a relief regardless as I can’t do anything about the big picture worries. tRump/election angst is keeping me awake at night and the constant anxiety is affecting my health so I’ve got to focus on daily life for awhile.

My daughter is designing and selling Vote Blue items on her Etsy site and donating most of the proceeds to Act Blue candidates so she has found a way to cope. This week’s sales went to Iowa, Tennessee, Florida, and New Jersey and her donation will go to to Sen. Doug Jones. RonK is wearing his #Vote sweatshirt when he does his daily errands and is keeping an informal discussion group informed at the gym. Small pebbles in a large pond, but hopefully the ripples will matter.

Best wishes to all on yet another rainy day.

    • Doug Jones might luck into having Roy Moore to run against again but it is more likely to be Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III. Maybe Doug can get a job in the Biden or Bloomberg administration – he would make a great Attorney General.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 19 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 28. Mainly cloudy skies. In the wee hours tomorrow, a storm system will move through the area dumping “who the heck knows?” inches of snow. Could be 8 could be 2 – most likely 4 in our area.

I did not watch the debate – Democrats in Disarray stresses me out and the news media ticks me off. The headlines suggest that finally people went at Mayo Pete and finally people exposed the foolish policy plans of the angry man directing his minions to destroy America to fluff up his ego. Bernie Sanders is Donald Trump – the hair, the anger, the willingness to have the worst people support him. I can’t wait until we move past the white states and start getting feedback from South Carolina and Nevada and then the Super Tuesday states. The sooner we get a nominee, the better.

The Puerto Rico aid bill passed and was sent to the Senate to die. tRump has already declared his intent – steeped in his racism and hate – to veto aid for Puerto Rico. I hope that karma catches up to Mitch McConnell, the enabler of the most corrupt, most unfit president in modern history.

The Weekly Democratic Party Address is back and the topic today is the PRO Act, a bill to guarantee the right of workers to organize. What, you thought that was already a right? No, it depends on who is in the White House and who controls the NLRB and the hundreds of other programs in the Labor Department. That bill will also die in the Senate but it is important to remind workers which political party is on their side – working for fair wages and decent working conditions. I wish I could say that it will make a difference but, in Wisconsin, labor union members voted for tRump because they liked the cut of his jib. I wonder if this time around they will realize that his mast is rotted and jump ship. In a just world, his failures would be covered in the news – instead the news media puffs him up because chaos sells papers and TV views. Blast them!

I have a long to-do list for the weekend and will put up the Fighting Back then get to it.

    See all y’all later!

  5. Saturday Meese. 26 here in the Catskills going up to 37.

Like Jan I didn’t watch the debate. Figgered clips after would do.
Seems to me the only major moment was Biden calling Rush medal racist and calling for a standing ovation for Vindman.

I did have an interesting debate sidebar thread in my stream

This Tweet from Black Professor moved me:

    The whole thread

I’m walking to the train a few minutes ago and a woman walked right up to me and gave me a tight hug and whispered quickly, “please act like you know me 3 guys are following me for a while” I played along then walked her 3 blocks home. What an experience for the both of us.

I’m not going to act like I didn’t hesitate because we’re in New York, people set you up real quick. Her hug was too real to be fake, and three men was following behind at a distance. As walked and talk i realized she was terrified, she kept saying i have to get home to her son.

I was walking looking at the debate, at the glance I saw her reaching her hands up, and before I can react she hugged me. After the hug she held my hand as we walked to her building. She apologized for the inconvenience, and I had to tell her it was my pleasure no inconvenience.

Whats crazy, I rarely walk down this block. I normally take one way to the train but the way I took is when I walk my dog. I guess my distraction of me watching the debate led me down that path I rarely take to the train. So I guess I was meant to there at that particular moment.

I can only imagine how she feels because this shit never happened to me before and I’m a little taken back. Inwas just going to my peoples how to chill, and this happened. My friends called out the blue and come through to chill. Sitting back analyzing this have me feeling a way.

We exchanged numbers, I told her my boyfriend & I would meet her at the train anytime if we’re home. The route she have to take home she has to walk under the train tracks, no other way, plus its dark. She said she would call again, I hope she do. I will call tomorrow to check in

  6. Watching the news, got tea steeping. Today: clean house & go to the gym. Figure out the mess with the phone & watch (Apple says this iPhone — a 5 — can’t talk to the watch)

  7. It’s 30 heading for 42 and sunny in Fay., AR – at least at the moment. I can use the sunny break. (We go back into cloudy, wintry mix tomorrow). Even though the sun kept coming and going yesterday it was around most of the day – enough to get to 9.86 KWHs and bring the m-t-d to 42.86 – and hopefully will be again today. Or even just that little bit more to get us over 10 for the day. I’ve got a little outside work I need to do. Probably should have done it yesterday. But it would cloud up every time I’d start to go out and do it. And the wind was a bit sharp. Doesn’t matter if it does that again today. This is the day I’ve got before the rain moves back in. sigh.

Of course I didn’t watch or follow the debate last night. I’m not even going to look for clips as I did when Kamala was still in. Or the not-debate comments Castro did. The whole damn primary has indeed been rigged – to clear the path of everyone except bernie. I can understand why rto pulled his party affiliation. (He’ll vote Dem “down ballot” but if bernie gets it he’s not gonna vote top of the ticket. Well, me neither.) So much for thinking getting a Latino at the head of the DNC was gonna make changes for diversity. Joe may be able to bring bernie down – he doesn’t have the white-man-vote that bernie does but he’s got the rest of the demographics that bernie certainly does not. Mayo Pete might because he’s young and better looking – but maybe it’s just me but I really don’t see any “Elvis” in him. In any of them. sigh.

    Corn cheese muffins in the oven I need to get out shortly. That and the sunshine are mood lifters. For which I give thanks. Healing/Helping Energy to everybody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good Saturn’s Day morning, Moosekind! It’s brilliantly sunny but cold: 36 F. at the moment, going up to 45 F. The winds will be a mere 5 to 10 miles an hour. Yesterday there were four tornadoes in Virginia and Maryland. This is rare for us, and unheard of at this time of year! One tornado struck Leesburg, Virginia, right down the road from us (10 miles or so), reducing trees to matchsticks. Dear Goddess, hope we don’t have any more of this.

Thursday’s night from hell forced me to take a morning nap. Got up and kept going, made it to the Writers’ Group meeting with the help of a mug of tea that I sipped to stay awake. Last night I intended to watch the debate’s second hour, but fell asleep in the chair. Then, after I woke up, I couldn’t get to sleep in our bed.

Rose again, came to the living room, and finished reading The Elephant Whisperer, which is a terrific read. At 2 a.m. I went back to bed and got up at 7. I wish I didn’t have such sleep problems.

This morning I need to do a little housework and then get going on the income taxes. In a fit of environmental-minded frenzy, I ordered a package of household items. Was very disappointed to find that most of them are items I can easily pick up in the grocery store, and dismayed to find that even those (Dr. Meyer stuff) came packaged in plastic bottles! Ordered bamboo toothbrushes and bar soap for shampoo and conditioner that came wrapped in recycled brown paper.

I hear there are tooth cleaning tablets that you put in your mouth to dissolve before you go at your teeth with a toothbrush. Will investigate those.

Other than that, looking forward to a peaceful weekend. Hope everyone else at the Pond will enjoy the same.

  9. Good morning, 43 and raining in Bellingham. A few sunny days are forecast for next week so we may see a blue sky again. It’s been a long two months of rain and gloom this winter.

I have been slowly sorting and cleaning closets but so far have just disturbed the front layers so I’ve got much more to do. RonK is the donation delivery driver and he says it’s a lot of stuff but I’m the sorter and packer so I know there is much more to come. I want to tackle the large storage closet at the top of the stairs next but I need a bit more energy because it’s deeply layered. I want to repack the items I’m keeping into clear plastic totes so I can find what I’m looking for. I know there is a foam neckroll pillow in there someplace!

Best wishes to all on this yet another rainy day.
