Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: April 9th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning. Slept in, watching the news. I’ve got next week’s food already done, so I don’t have to cook. Do plan to get my walk in later. Though the high is forecast to be 92….. Maybe a visit to the gym?

  2. Good Saturday morning, Meese! And a cloudy morning it is, too. It’s 63 F. in Ashburn at the moment, so I pity the poor Cherry Blossom princesses shivering in their strapless pink gowns. It might rain. Then again, it might not.

Never made it to check-in yesterday because of being so busy. Thursday was the day of our monthly Blue Ridge Writers Group meeting. I had a Shakespeare cake and party favors, mostly little scented sachets of the kind you hang in the closet or put in a drawer. The cake wasn’t as gorgeous as last year’s, but it still tasted good. One writer remarked that surely no other writers’ group ever had as much fun as ours! At the end of our lively discussion, my trusty second-in-command remarked that this session had produced our best writing yet.

Of course, being unable to speak properly, I had to type out my critiques of everyone’s haikus or sonnets, and Jim, my trusty lieutenant, read them out. People seemed happy with their feedback, but I am going to have to tell them about scansion the next time we do poetry. In May we’re doing flash fiction—you know, what used to be called short-short stories. You can still find the occasional short-short story in magazines.

Friday the Chief Raging Granny and I drove to NRA HQ in Fairfax to stand vigil with the others. To my surprise, whom did I see but but my circle sister, M.! Of course, having no voice, it took me some time to attract her attention. She was totally focused on two college students who were present. It seems that Goobernator Dumbkin is going to speak at George Mason U. on “education.” Six thousand GMU students signed a petition to keep him from coming, but the president of GMU said that would be against free speech (which indeed it would). So the students are going to stage a walkout. M. plans to be there. I don’t know whether I will.

Of course, we were in deep blue Fairfax, so we received many thumbs-up and lots of honks!

Last night was the UU dinner, which I greatly enjoyed. I don’t get out much, owing to looking after Dearly. The food was awful, of course, except for the soup, but the company was great. After dinner we discussed diversity and inclusion, which one man said seemed to be rolling backwards. Naturally, now that the Rethug party has devolved into an antisemitic, misogynist, BIPOC-hating cult.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, even the Washington Post weather people have admitted that our area is in drought. We are now five inches under for the year to date with respect to rainfall. That’s one of the reasons I don’t want to have a garden this year: the thought of tottering out to water it every day would be just too much. Enough to do I’ve already got, thanks.

Today’s agenda: write up a questionnaire in the hope of getting answers from vegetarian residents and running to Trader Joe’s before it gets too awful. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  3. It’s 68 heading for 78 today. Started cloudy but its’ sunny at the moment. More clouds and maybe rain this afternoon. If we’re going to get the clouds I certainly hope we get the rain. The solar panels are covered with pollen. Still, yesterday we generated 16 KWHs and the m-t-d is at 211.8 – on track with enough room to spare that a cloudy day won’t derail us.

I talked to my sister Mary last night. My nephew is responding well to chemo and they’ve got his pain under control. His regime/protocol is 5-days chemo, 2 weeks off, 5-days on. I don’t know for how long – but friends are trying to find a 6-month rental for Alice in Denver. Apparently the cancer spread is just that – his lungs and kidneys aren’t cancerous, they’ve got lumps of testicular cancer growing in them. I don’t understand how or why but apparently the oncologist considers that a good sign. As best Mary can figure out, Grant will either be cancer free or dead in 6 months. Keep Holding the Good Thoughts.

I heard from Fineena last night. Her surgery hasn’t so far fixed anything, which is very depressing, but she’s only a week out and is giving it more time before calling it a failure/waste of time and money. Her house has been assessed as a lot more valuable than it really is and the landlord’s threatening to raise the rent again. Since it’s already more than her total income, that ain’t gonna fly. So far she hasn’t found even a clue or lead to getting another place though.

    Disturbed sleep – again – partly due to the dust/grass pollen from the yard getting its first mowing of the year yesterday. Hands are about the same. Not as painful since it’s warmer, slightly swollen, and tremors. More sighs. Oh well, time to get over to twitter & spoutible. Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  4. Good morning meese. It’s 69 degrees in Kingston with a high of 77 and rain/thunderstorms in the afternoon forecast. I had a very pleasant visit with Dee yesterday!

  5. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 54 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 79. Sunny skies.

I will return to read and comment later – I got caught up in a work project that ran long and is going to require more time and eyes-forward to finish.

Have a great day and see all y’all later!
