Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 16th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 85 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 108. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. My phone alarm went off with a Tornado alert just now.

Lots of thunder and lightning atm.

    Puerto Rico

If you are in the west/southwest area of Puerto Rico and the police don’t arrive in time to deal with a crime… You know, they’re around La Parguera. I wonder, what would be the objective of this deployment of police officers? Arrest those who were reforesting our mangroves?

  3. Good morning. Watching Le Tour — there was a crash this morning, the third or fourth caused by a spectator this year. Tea is steeping, later today I’ll make next week’s breakfast. It is too hot to go outside in the afternoon, I’ll exercise indoors.

  4. It’s 76 going to 95 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated a hair under 20 KWHs and the m-t-d at 238.8 gained a little. I just closed up the house. Looking at the widget, I’d say I’ll probably be able to open up late tonight or very early in the morning, but then I’m stuck with at least 3 and probably 4 days when I won’t be able to turn off the A/C at all. Happy summer. But at least I do have A/C. I didn’t growing up in Houston. Even the schools weren’t air conditioned until after I graduated.

Aji’s got so many health and financial issues of her own, but right now she’s boosting a fundraiser that’s only got about 17 days left but still has about $25K to go to restore a mosque in Portales, NM that was vandalize by White Nationalists/Evangelicals. If anybody could give it a boost, that would be good. (If you haven’t already, of course.)

The medical industry is apparently training its nurses to deny patients access to their doctors. Last week Fineena was sent home because due to traffic she was 12 minutes late and they have a 10-minute rule. (She’s got a good doctor though – Russian, ironically – who tore the nurses a new one when she found out.) Earicicle spent 3 days and 18 phone calls – and finally going to Urgent Care – to get an antibiotic for her UTI. I don’t know how her doctor will react because at this point she’s so upset and exhausted she’s talking about finding a new doctor rather than telling the current one what happened. Fortunately I don’t need a doctor because at my doctor’s office you can’t even reach a nurse. You either leave a voice message on the phone or a request on their “portal” and wait until somebody contacts you. If they do. There’s nothing to do with health or care – just profit for the medical industry in American.

    Household chores are done. Yes, hands and back are protesting. Time to get to my boosting chores. Accompanied by the music in Dee’s diary. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday moaning, Moosekind! Waal, what a nightmare weekend! Currently it’s 77 F. and cloudy in Ashburnikins. We might have a thunderstorm.

Dearly says we had a thunderstorm before midnight last night. Yesterday happened to be St. Swithin’s Day. If you remember:

St. Swithin’s Day, if thou dost rain
For forty days it shall remain

We left here at 3:30 p.m. on Friday to go to Younger Son’s house to look after Karl and the puppy. The travelers were supposed to arrive at IAD at 6:20 p.m. Well, guess what—we had a violent thunderstorm in Chantilly, where Trevor’s house is, so the plane couldn’t land. It was diverted to Pittsburgh, and DIL texted us that it would land at IAD at 8:39. At that point my poor husband, who is not a well man and nearly 93 years old to boot, had been waiting uncomfortably in the car for ages.

Then it turned out that yes, the plane landed, but the line at Immigration and Customs was an hour and a half long! Finally, Trevor left work at 10 p.m. to go pick them up at 10:30. We left his house at 10 and drove home. Karl was probably only alone with the puppy for an hour, and he’s nine, so we figured he’d be OK.

Yesterday I had karate at 10, a Drama Club meeting at 2, and another meeting at 4. One of my writers wrote an article about hypothyroidism, which she has, and wanted me to go over it with her, which I gladly did. At 4:30, all the lights went out! Luckily, we were nearly finished by that time, and sitting next to a window, so we could still see. I went to pick up dinner and found there was none. The electricity outage was campuswide.

As I walked through our building on the way back to our flat, I saw several neighbors sitting in the hall. After some discussion, we decided Putie was responsible for the electricity outage. It’s just the kind of thing he’d do to get revenge on Americans. Don and I then drove to Anita’s across the street, and enjoyed a large, unseemly Mexican dinner.

Luckily, our Kindles still worked, so we read in the dark until 10 minutes to nine, at which the lights came back on. It just shows one how dependent we are on electricity. Without it, life is like, primitive.

The family are coming to tea and Nora is spending the night, so I’ll make blackberry tarts. Then I need to drive her to volleyball camp before 9. It’s 2 miles down the road from here, apparently. Knowing her sleep habits, we’ll probably have to drag her unconscious body out of bed at 8:30, put clothes on it, and then drive her—uncombed, unwashed, and unbreakfasted, to the camp.

And guess what: Beloved Nephew, Darling Niece, and the future Steven Spielberg (East Coast version), who had been so looking forward to their two-week vacation in Hollywood, find themselves in the middle of an actors’ and writers’ strike! Great-Nephew’s movie-making camp in one of the studios is not affected, but on the studio lots, no one is writing or performing. Beloved Nephew and Darling Niece plan to take B. to his camp as usual, then offer bottles of cold water to the marching strikers. They might even march with them!

Have a most tiresome half-hour meeting at 1 p.m. with two members of the Drama Club so we can look at the stage next door and decide how to position the spotlight for my play. I am beginning to regret that I ever joined the Drama Club. It seems to be taking over my life.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Remembering John Lewis today

    • Looks like “Good Trouble” to me! Thank goodness that we are a post-racial society now. :::insert eyeroll here:::

  7. Monday Meese. 70 going up to a muggy 89 today here in Kingston.

    Puerto Rico

  8. Good morning. Got my walk done. 80 degrees is starting to feel normal. Anyway, at work, getting ready for an in-office day. But I’m leaving early, so that’s nice. I realized last night I’m out of my dinner beans, so I’m picking up beans, spinach & rotel tomatoes so I can soak the beans tonight & cook them tomorrow while I’m home.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 84 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 106. Mainly sunny with a slight chance of rain in the late afternoon. Today we have an Excessive Heat Warning and a Blowing Dust Advisory. I hope the wind is blowing in some moisture and cooler air! Our Excessive Heat Warning was supposed to expire tonight but has been extended to Wednesday night.

JHC, what in holy hell is wrong with RFK Jr??!!? Did he fall on his head as a young child, get some bad drugs from one of his siblings or cousins? “COVID was created in a way to not infect Jewish people”? Someone in the Kennedy family needs to run an intervention. Hey, Joe III, come and pick up your trash.

I worked on a number of projects over the weekend but did not have a lot of success with them. I am going to do something simple today and then take a break. I have something I have to do every day this week so I should probably put together a good to-do list. In any event, I have to take my walk before it heats up any more.

    See all y’all later!

  10. It’s 73 heading for 90 sunny at the moment but the widget sez there’ll be clouds and rain this afternoon. The clouds I believe. The rain I’ll believe when it falls. Yesterday we generated 18.7 KWHs. The m-t-d at 257.4 is not on track but it did gain a little. If the clouds show up when the widget sez they will, we’ll lose ground today. sigh.

I’ve closed up the house already. I may not be able to open it up again for the rest of the week. I put flea goo on the cats. All but Bobbie. I’m never going to manage that. He sees the paraphernalia coming out and he hides under the bed. But he doesn’t go outside and he does “wrassle” with the other cats so he should be OK. Charlie and Cloud are old hands at this. They don’t like it but they’re OK with it. The twins are still a problem. Catching them and then holding them long enough to squirt the stuff on them ain’t easy. We’ll see how long before they forgive me and let me pet them again. My “adventure” for the day. Talk about your 1st world issues. But 3rd world people don’t like being bit by fleas any more than I do. They just can’t afford flea goo for their animals.

    I haven’t checked in on anybody yet. I’m assuming if there’s not a phone call or email then they’re managing at least as well as they were the last time I checked on them. Time to get to boosting stuff. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind. Woke up far too early, made breakfast for Nora, then delivered her to volleyball camp. Her dad will pick her up at noon.

We have 84 F. outside and hazy skies from Canadian wildfires. If it weren’t for that, it would be a sunny day. So far, though, the air quality has not been affected because the smoke is too high up in the atmosphere.

Will write when I’m not quite so sleepy. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  12. Good morning, 64, cloudy and breezy outside my window today. Been a very busy few days getting this place ready for company, but we’re nearly there. If all the car troubles are fixed Erica and her family will arrive today. I had more work to do outside than I realized so yesterday was long, but the patios are ready for outdoor living. I have an easy day planned, with just a few flowers to arrange and brownies to bake for dessert to bake. RonK will cook dinner tonight……pork loin on the barbeque, served with a fresh corn salsa. Best wishes to all.

  13. Tuesday Meese. 70 going up to 87 here in Kingston, and raining.

    Puerto Rico

  14. Good morning. So glad to be at home, watching Le Tour. Got plenty of work to do. Still really happy about yesterday’s news on the AIDS front. The thought that the end could be in sight…..Almost overwhelming.

  15. It’ 80 heading for 100 and who knows what the heat index will be. Yesterday we got the clouds. Also some wind and rumbling thunder. And just enough rain to wet the streets so it could steam off again when the sun came back out. We generated 12 KWHs and the m-t-d at 270 is not on track and losing ground.

I didn’t open the house last night or this morning. I’ve got the laundry going and will shortly be taking it out. I’m sure the cats will escape. They’re very antsy right now with the house closed up and no open windows at all. It’s overcast but it’s not supposed to rain and heaven knows the heat’s enough to dry the clothes even with clouds.

Some anniversaries really suck and today is one for basket. Harper’s been gone 5 months. It’s doesn’t get better. You just get used to it. (Momma’s been gone 34 years and 6 months.)

    I don’t know why I’m feeling groggy. I got almost 7 hours of sleep and the sinusitis flare didn’t keep me up longer than half an hour. Oh well, work to do. I’d best get to it. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Death anniversaries are so sad. It’s not the same as losing a human, but today Monty Beagle would have been 12 in “hooman” years. I try not to think about him, it still hurts.

  17. Good Tuesday morning, Meese, and happy National Ice Cream Day! Here in Ashburn we have 79 F. and a Code Orange. On TV it’s always a Code Orange. Will we ever get rid of That Face?

Sitting here enjoying another huge cup of coffee and my fleeting moment of fame. This morning John Kelly of the WaPo used my account of my father’s meeting Elvis back in 1958, when the latter was inducted into the army. Kelly couldn’t use the pictures I provided, because I don’t know the name of the AP reporter who took them. One shows my Dad in an overcoat, busily scribbling away in a notebook as Elvis eats a meal. The other shows Dad in the background again as Elvis is being helped into his new uniform jacket. Following is the link to the article:

Yesterday was a lost day because my aging bod rebelled at having to do so many things in 48 hours. Today will be the same, unfortunately.

I need a shower, a visit to the hairdresser, a quick stop at the supermarket, and at 2 p.m. there will be ice cream on the lawn for all. Our family motto is, “Anything that’s free, go and get it,” so we’ll be there.

Then dinner with the UU’s at 5, followed by a read-through of my play at 7:30. I DO hope tomorrow will be an “empty square” day on the calendar!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  18. Good morning, 62 and sunny outside my window today. Erica and her family arrived last evening, so nice to eat dinner together in the kitchen again. No plans for today yet, but tonight we go to a classical music concert at WWU. Hope I can stay awake! Best wishes to all.

  19. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 81 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high 106. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast – a slight chance of rain this afternoon. That is the monsoon cycle, there is almost always a chance of rain. Yesterday, we did get the rain, between 1 and 2 inches officially yesterday evening. The temperature dropped by 20 degrees in about 15 minutes and I was able to enjoy the rain from my deck and feel the refreshingly cool breeze. It won’t cool us down for long, our Excessive Heat Warning is still in place until Friday.

I had a too busy morning and just finished up with some client work and some emails. I am now done for the day and will go put my feet up.

    See all y’all later!
