Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 30th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Thanks for the b-day good wishes! 63 here going up to 74.

    Puerto Rico

  2. Good morning. Slept in, I’ll exercise indoors this afternoon. Watching astronomy, getting ready for work. I’m happy about the indictment, but frustrated that that will be the only thing the news talks about for even more days. The climate crisis, book censorship, and the general Republican dismantling of government continue on, with the national news paying no attention.

    • So true, another. I can’t bear to read the paper or watch the news. It’s all Orange, all the time, and with the WaPo, it’s NEVER good news for Democrats or for Biden. Blast their ugly hides.

  3. It’s 83 heading for 100/110 and sunny at the moment. We generated 17.6 KWHs yesterday which isn’t a great start to the month but it’s not a bad start and we are on track. For now. During the waning of the year I am really more comfortable if we “front load” the generation. LOL.

    Right on schedule Fineena got her first setback yesterday. When the trash haulers got there and saw they were dealing with a disabled old woman, suddenly the prices were much higher and there were all kinds of restrictions on what they could haul – things she’d specifically discussed with the office before hiring them. After they’d argued and sent more photos “to the home office” and got agreement with their crap, she hauled out her notes and read them to the guys. Who walked out the door and drove off. The POD is supposed to come today, not tomorrow (I misunderstood the other night). So she’s now planning to get enough stuff into the POD to clear one room so she can shove junk into it and go on from there.

    I got my haircut yesterday but not a pleasant event. Same guy who’s done it the last dozen times, but this time he got snotty about being asked to wear a mask. OK, not “asked” – Since both stylists were available I said “Whoever’s working on me needs to wear a mask, please.” Once I was in the chair and he was starting to cut he went on at length about how they don’t have a mandate but are always happy to do what was needed to protect my health and I could at least be polite about it. I responded I thought I was polite – and considering what I thought of saying, I was – so he said “you spoke firmly” and I let it go. If he’d started that before he’d started cutting, I’d have just walked out. The haircut was finished in stony silence instead of the cheerful burbling he usually does. And did with the previous client whom he spend twice the normal time on. So I guess I need to find a different place to get my hair cut. Pity that. It’s so close and I’ve never had a bad experience with them before, with any of the stylists I’ve seen over the years. The grocery store was out of my GF flours, too. Totally an unsatisfactory outing. And while, after over a half an hour of futzing around with BofA I got my credit card unlocked, Patreon still hasn’t rerun the charge so I don’t have access to any of the posts on my Patreon account. sigh. But the laundry got done so that’s a plus for the day. LOL.

    I just finished making a batch of chocolate pudding and need to get started on my boosting day. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  4. OMG, bfitz, I’m sorry you had such an unpleasant experience with the hairdresser! My daughter in Texas writes that she has started masking again because of a Covid surge. I expect we’ll all have to pretty soon.

    Hope you can get a nicer stylist next time.

    Fineena has the worst luck in the world, I swear.

    • {{{Diana}}} I suspect what he was really upset about was that I walk rather than sit while I’m waiting if I don’t manage to be first in line and he took as long with his first client as the other stylist did with her first 2. He took my pacing as a reflection on him but couldn’t say so. But yeah, I’ll see if I can find a new stylist. Yeah, Fineena really does have the worst luck in the world. I hope your day gets better. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • No one deserves our business and especially snotty people. I am fortunate to have a simple haircut and I have photos of what it should look like that I show to every new hair stylist. If they don’t get it right, hair grows back!

  5. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind. It’s 76 F. degrees here. I’m sorry, but I’m so grumpy this morning for various reasons that I really can’t post my usual nonsense.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 86 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 100. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The heat dome is returning and we will be under an Excessive Heat Warning again Friday through Sunday. The problem is that the monsoon season was late and is a bit spotty. Most years, we have enough rain to cool things down into the 90s but this year the storms are sporadic.

    I turned off my news feed – the all consuming tRump sh*t show is a ridiculous waste of time. I am glad Jack Smith filed the indictment to remind people that there are laws and not one is above them but this just makes it even more of an existential crisis that Biden needs to win re-election. If tRump is convicted but wins, it will be the end of our democracy as he will destroy what is left of the rule of law. If he is acquitted and wins, the country will blow up as he uses his power to punish everyone who crossed him. It is a terrible thing what Bernie Sanders and his followers did in 2016, choosing to stay home because they did not like Hillary Clinton. Sitting out elections has consequences. Goddess help us if we can’t mobilize every decent person in America to get out and vote in 2024.

    I will be going off the grid for a few days and will likely not be able to check-in until Monday. I set the Welcomings post to Auto-publish at 2am EDT on 8/6. If I get back online before then, I will post a comment, otherwise my “comment” will be in the post. I hope everyone behaves. :)

    See all y’all later!

  7. Thursday Meese. 55 here in Kingston going up to 81 with rain.Very weird morning weather for August.

    Puerto Rico

  8. Good morning. Got my walk done. Hip is still saying “no” to running. Leaving early today to pick up contacts. Had a really bad night’s sleep, so the short work day is good.

  9. Good Thursday morning, Meese. We have yet ANOTHER overcast day here, presumably from Canadian wildfires, so it’s as ugly as Melon’s new logo. The temp. in Ashboring is 74 F., going up to 85 F. with somewhat increased humidity.

    M’Daughter and SIL are already in Massachusetts. Their destination, an hour’s drive from Boston’s Logan Airport, is Lenox, MA. There, the daytime high, 77 F. is the night-time low in Austin. Night-time lows in Lenox will be in the 50s, a welcome change from what they’ve been experiencing. Daughter and SIL will close on the townhouse they bought, choose colors and fixtures, and hire contractors to rehab the bathrooms, up with which M’Daughter, who is a Leo, will not put.

    Ate far too much at the birthday party last night, and the scales were not kind this morning. I do wish I weren’t so greedy. However, I’m not going to try to get one of those expensive drugs to lose weight, the side effects sound awful.

    The night of the full moon, I hopped on the campus shuttle. It was being driven by Cesar, a handsome, popular driver. I told him I wanted to see the Sturgeon Moon, so we went driving around the campus, peering through the windows as we went. No dice. However, when he arrived home that night at 9:30, he did see it and took a photo. He showed it to me yesterday when I came out of the birthday party to come back to our building.

    Have a Pubs meeting at 3, would love to get a mani but am not sure I’ll have time, and so on. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  10. It’s 89/95 heading for 102/107 and sunny. Yesterday we got just over 18 KWHs and the m-t-d at 36 is still on track.

    The worst of the heatwave is supposed to be today but tomorrow is almost as high. The cool front is still showing to be moving in Sunday. And it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to open up until then. But I may be able to turn off the A/C next week. Which would be nice.

    Fineena got the POD yesterday and wonder of wonders it was set up properly. She’s got to get some boxes to start packing and loading. She’s also got to hire somebody to load what little furniture she’s taking with her as it’s heavy. I hope the fundraiser is soon because she’s going to start needing money by next week. And if the monies from those of us who are already planning to help her are channeled through the fundraiser it increases the chances that others will help too.

    I don’t know if there’s something in the air or just having the A/C on so much but these sinusitis flares are not helpful. Mess with my sleep at night and make me groggy during the day. Oh well. I’m still functioning, if slowly. I still don’t have my Patreon back and that is aggravating. But xitter’s still there & spoutible of course and I’d best get to my boosting chores. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good morning, 67 an sunny outside my window today. I met with a young gardener yesterday and I think I’ve finally found someone to help me in the garden, yay! I’m so relieved. We will work together to get all the plantings back in order, then make an ongoing maintenance plan. I want to work with her in the whole garden, but keep my main focus on the container plants. That’s easier for me to do now and when I’m not so weary it’s creative work I enjoy doing. I know I’m fortunate to have such choices and am feeling very grateful. Best wishes to all.

  12. Friday Meese. 65 going up to 80 with rain here in Kingston.

    Puerto Rico

  13. Good morning. Got my walk done & am inside blessing the invention of a/c. Yesterday was good, I’m glad he was indicted, glad the judge said what she said. I do wish we could talk about climate change for maybe a little bit. This summer is on track to blow 2011 (when we had over 90 days over 100 degrees) out of the water. If only we had water….

  14. It’s 82 heading for 100/107 and sunny. Yesterday we generated just over 18 KWHs and the m-t-d at 54 is still on track. Next week isn’t going to be as cool as they’ve been saying but it’s still going to be a heck of a lot cooler than this week. Looking forward to the front moving through starting Sunday. I’m going to get a pizza for lunch/dinner from my son (it’s his last week “subbing” at a regular pizza store before he opens his “Grab & Go” store in the dorm) and not cook today.

    It’s nice that indictments are happening. No trial without them and all that. But I’ll do my celebrating when/if we get convictions – and real sentences. Meanwhile small business is way down (Aji only got 1 sale in July and none so far this month and several people on the needs list are there because no sales but the rent goes on), my Patreon is still effed up and the only response I got from the support team was to thank me for my email and to tell me to do what I told them in the email they thanked me for but didn’t read I’d already done, and Fineena had to use what she’d hoped would be her pro-rated rent for August to catch up her several months’ overdue utilities plus deposits so they’d turn on service at the new place on the 15th. sigh.

    Off to xitter and Spoutible to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good morning, 67 and sunny outside my window today. I relaxed into a vacation state of mind yesterday and it was nice. I may do the same today, but must remember to take care of my friends dog as she is in Seattle for more chemo. Best wishes to all.

  16. Saturday Meese. 57 going up to 82. Last night was scary – we got tornado alerts and had massive thunderstorms. Thankfully, they have passed.

    Puerto Rico

  17. Good morning. Watching the news, eating breakfast…… watching mostly the local news since national news is all tfg. Yes, I know the indictment & protective order are a big deal, but we’re living through the tipping point on global warming, there’s school district takeovers, censorship….so many other things. Anyway, for me Saturdays are groceries, laundry & cooking. I’ll either go to the gym or jog in place/jumping jacks while I cook.Oh – I’m hosting the music diary at the orange place today. I wrote on liberal country musicians. Come by if you want.

  18. It’s 85 heading for 95/103 and overcast. The breeze is almost cool. At least comparatively speaking. I think the front’s trying to move in a little early but if it is, it’s being slow about it. Yesterday we got right at 17.5 KWHs and the m-t-d at 71.4 is still on track.

    Sinusitis flares and tremors – the first messes with my sleep and the second with my ability to use the computer mouse (also hold a pen steady to write but I don’t write a whole lot these days). Minor issues compared to most folks I know. Drip from the kitchen faucet getting a lot worse. (Got enough in the bucket overnight to fill a toilet tank – which is what I did with it.) My son says he’ll put in a new gasket tomorrow afternoon/evening when he comes over.

    Fineena hopes to get the junked furniture out of the house today. Apparently 2 Men and a Truck will haul off old furniture even though they don’t do trash. Fineena hopes that since they’re a national franchise they will actually do what their office people say they’ll do and she won’t have a repeat of the junk-hauler fiasco of the other day. My Patreon’s still effed up. For the folks I know their PayPals or Ko-fi I’ve sent their money. They shouldn’t have to suffer/not be able to pay bills just because Patreon effed up and so far hasn’t fixed it.

    Anyway, off to xitter and Spoutible to do my boosting chores. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
