Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Nov. 19th through Nov. 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

    Good morning, 42 and raining in Bellingham. I’ve got a busy but quiet day planned so I hope it stays that way because the family will start arriving tomorrow for our T Day holiday. It’s fun to have everyone here, but it’s not quiet!

    My whole family has the tRump flue so we’re going to try to keep our angst contained and have a life affirming time together in spite of the mess our country is in.

    Hope it’s a good day for all.

    40 at dawn and 58 now, just about the high predicted. Started cloudy but the sun seems to be breaking through the clouds. The PV system is generating at 1 KWH at the moment. Got almost 7.8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 110.4 so could get up to 118 today although I doubt it will quite make it.

    Evils Ones doing evil things – and scurrying almost panic-stricken around to do as many as they can since they (thankfully) have been blocked from doing some of the worst. (Soloing today so found a quiet moment to call my senators and tell them I didn’t know why they were OK with the tax bill, not funding SCHIP, not helping Puerto Rico – but I’m not.) No change in my status at the other place. You can connect those statements or not as you wish. I miss my family over there.

    Need to get back to work – bunch of faculty just got back from a conference in Philadelphia and are handing in their travel claims for reimbursement. So far every single one of them has a problem I have to deal with before I can process the claim. Joys of… :) This is my last conference to deal with. Tomorrow is this week’s Friday. Then three 5-day work weeks, one 4-day work week and that’s it. I’m not officially off the payroll until 12/31/17 but my actual last day of work will be 12/21/17. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

      Dearest bfitz, you will enjoy retirement to the max!

        {{{Diana}}} – well, I’ve worked full- or part-time since I was 15 (except for 2 years off, 1 for each baby) – or been fairly desperately looking for work – so this is going to take some serious getting used to. And I’ve apparently been shut off from what I’d been planning to do. But I’ll come up with something.

        I’ve got a bunch of folks who’d like me to come visit but that’s going to depend on things like how much money I have for that sort of thing. Living on my Social Security is another thing I’ll have to get used to. But I most certainly will do my best to enjoy it. :) moar {{{HUGS}}}

          though I’m not sure how that works for a national park… they’re not exactly mobile. 😂

            {{{basket}}} – you’re always welcome. I seldom get company and only have one spare bed and the fold-out sofa bed – but if folks bring sleeping bags and are willing to sleep on the floor I could put up at least 16 and have room to walk around the bodies. :)

            But yeah, national parks aren’t mobile and those trips if even possible are going to take some planning as well as money. (Including a cat sitter if my neighbor moves.)

            I’m still kicking NN18 around in my mind too – but only because I want to see Denise and can’t think of any other way to do it. sigh. So. Lots of dreams – just need to work on possibilities. :) moar {{{HUGS}}}

    Good moaning, Meese! Moaning because I’ve been awake since 4 and up since 5. It’s too dark to see what kind of day it’s going to be, as the current time is 6:19. I can see the streets are dry, though, and all the lights are on in the house across the way. Weird.

    Everything about being old is great except for two: inability to sleep and dry skin.

    Going downstairs to get the paper in a minute and make a cup of tea. It’s cold in this house. See y’all later!

      Good moaning, indeed! I was trying to sleep in not-my-bed after a harrowing drive. They are all harrowing at my age but this one featured 4 hours driving into 20mph head-side wind – driving W with a WNW wind – and ending up a rush hour in the dark at my destination. I spent the evening doing nothing but savoring not being in a car.

      It is 26 here in Misery with an expected high of 44, about 10 degrees warmer than at home. Tomorrow we will be treated with 60 degree weather and maybe 70 on Friday!

      I was newsless yesterday except for breaking news emails. I noticed that Net Neutrality was killed and I am hoping there is a way to salvage it either via lawsuit or putting pressure on Republicans to vote statutory protections. To not regulate Internet access as a public utility is the height of insanity. Every news organization should be on this pushing back forcefully.

      See all y’all later!

    Skipped my walk this morning — it’s cold & I was running a bit behind, so I figured I’ll make up for it at the gym this evening. Visited my friend at the hospital last night. She’s ok, maybe moving to the rehab section soon. Her daughter isn’t coming home for Thanksgiving — she had a big job interview so she stayed in Boston. David Cassidy was my first little girl crush, I was in 4th grade when Partridge Family was on. Had his poster in my room. All the new U2 music & my brain is playing Discotheque on repeat.

    Headed out to buy turkey day fixings – I’m going to cook a full meal though it is only the two of us – godkids coming by on Friday for the plentiful leftovers – and I’m going to freeze a bunch of food for later.

    24 at dawn and 27 when I got to work. Sunny though which is nice. Got just under 7 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 115.7 – so might get 150 for the month. I hope so. That’s about what I use and i’d really like to stay ahead of my use. Hands are finally warming up – I use my first cup of coffee at work more as a hand warmer than a hot drink :) – and typing is becoming easier. Not easy, just easier. So that’s good, too.

    Evil Ones keep being Evil. We keep Resisting. Nothing new under the sun. Nothing new as far as my status at the other place. Well, there’s something new about the situation but not directly impacting me. Only making me more worried for my family there. Nothing new under the sun.

    Soloing again – I’m the only one of the office staff whose work can’t be done from home. The others can so I told them to do so. My last Thanksgiving gift to my fellow staff. Meanwhile I need to see if any of those travel claims can actually be processed yet. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    Good morning, 62 and cloudy in Bellingham. A warm wind blew in from somewhere last night and the temperature change is surprising. One more day of T Day prep, but my sons are coming to help make the stuffing and gravy and set the tables so it will be fun. Our Oregon daughter and her family will be here later today.

    Some good news…..after a nearly a month of monitoring and adjusting meds my blood pressure is near the “normal” zone. It has been very high so that may be the reason for all the headaches and dizziness I’m been experiencing. I didn’t realize it was so high so I’ve learned a lesson re the importance of being more aware.

    Time for coffee. Take care everyone.

      {{{princesspat}}} – Definitely good news. Maybe some deep breathing or other sorts of meditation activities to help keep the BP down? In addition to the meds – getting off your meds is a bad idea. But sometimes you can short-circuit a spike and stop it from creating a feedback loop by focusing on your breathing or visiting a fantasy safe space. Healing Energy.

    Good morning, meese! Thursday …

    It will be 60 degrees here in the middle of the country; tomorrow it will be 70! We shooed the cold weather east – I hope you eventually get the warming, east coast Moose.

    I will steel myself for an afternoon spent with mostly tRumpers and avoid discussing politics. I tested the waters yesterday thinking that there might be some common outrage about the Republican #TaxScam that is raising taxes on middle income Americans to lower them on the wealthy. Nope! The wealthy need the cuts to create jobs!! Sigh. I didn’t even bother mentioning that some of the cuts came from Medicare. I am sure it would be met with cries of “Fake News”. If we survive, we will look back on this time as when the mainstream media willingly ceded their role as truth tellers to get clicks and fuel the 5 minute news cycle. Right now I have no idea who or what will fill that needed role.

      {{{Denise}}} – at least you have a neighbor whose stove you can use. But, yeah, sux. Read your diary. Chef Andes is a good man. Also read noweasels’ diary – not good news but the bright spots were Chef Andres’ team feeding 30,000 good hot meals today and Bill Clinton having brought in an airlift of supplies from the Clinton Foundation and toured the island to made sure they got where they were supposed to. So a few things to be grateful for. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    Good frosty Thursday morning, Moosekind! It’s a spectacularly beautiful day here in NoVa, with a current temp. of 27 F., going up to 46 F. Today I’ll make an apple pie before roasting the diced root vegetables in olive oil. People really seem to like that dish.

    Nothing new politically except the details. Nothing new at the other place except the details. Blessings on my online families. Holding you all in my heart and sending Healing Energy. November 24, 2017 at 7:01 am

    Good morning, meese! Friday …

    It is supposed to be in the 70s today which will allow today’s post-holiday gatherings to spill outdoors. Yesterday, at my sibling’s house, kids – and adults! – played outside before and after the Thanksgiving meal. It was a good time and the conversation stayed away from politics although I caught scraps of a conversation about how inhumane the immigrant roundup is. So I think there is some buyer’s remorse, a feeling that people did not realize just how bad electing an awful person (just because of the R after his name), could be. Now if we could just get them to agree that we need a Democratic Congress to put a check on him, that will be real progress.

    If reports are accurate, it sounds like Flynn is flipping. The question is who he would be able to implicate – Kushner, Donnie Jr, Trump himself? Who would Mueller think would be worth going easy on Flynn to get and who wouldn’t get an immediate pardon? I guess we will find out.

    See all y’all later!

  15. November 24, 2017 at 8:00 am

    Good morning, Meese! It’s a lovely, frosty Freya’s day with clear blue skies and white frost on the grass and the tops of cars. It’s 25 F. in NoVa now, going up to 53 F. later. Ate far too much yesterday, so refused to weigh myself this morning.

    Today will visit my friend in the retirement community. Then I’ll come home and rest before dinner. It exhausts me to be talked at nonstop, which is why the priestess training weekends used to drive me crazy.

    So if Flynn flipped, we can hope that certain people will be spending next year at Club Fed, right? Let’s hope so!

    Visited my friend yesterday & decided to get my walk in, so I did twice around the big block where the hospital & associated buildings are — 1.25 miles. Not going today because there’s a home game & the hospital is right by campus. Will walk a mile & go to the gym to do the workout the trainer gave me. There’s an evil ab thing — you know how planks look easy but they’re not? This is like that, but standing & pulling a weight from the side… Anyway it’s harder than it looks. Got my iPod all charged up, new music to keep me pumped.

    November 24, 2017 at 10:00 am

    40 at dawn and 55 now. Supposed to get close to 70 this afternoon. I’ve got a fire going anyway since I’m home. It’s not 70 yet. :) Says partly cloudy today and I am seeing some fluffy clouds in the sky but so far it’s not the kind of cloudy that depresses the spirit and the electricity generation. Got 7.5 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 131 so 150 for the month is definitely possible and 180 for the month is barely possible (but would be nice).

    Have not looked at any news. I don’t expect anything to be different – politically or at the “other place” (which I have sort of visited this morning as someone sent me a link to a Thanksgiving diary for me – but I’ve only visited that blessing of a diary). Best I can do at the moment is Channel Healing Energy in all directions through every connection of every kind that I have – which I’m doing. Meanwhile I’ve got turkey bones simmering for stock and will be making soup later today. (Since I don’t have any wine in the house, I need to go add some vinegar to help leech the calcium out of the bones and into the stock.) Gonna check the Villages here and at DK then get offline again – I have got to develop a routine that includes getting some exercise when I’m not going to work daily and there’s no time like the present. Well, after I get more coffee. heh. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    Good morning, meese! Saturday …

    It is travel day and the expected temperatures along the way and into Madison will be mid-50s then mid-40s. Sunny skies and (thank the goddess) only light winds. I am looking forward to sleeping in my own bed and waking up in my own house. It was generally a nice visit with only one brief unpleasant conversation. I found a few red state libruls which reaffirmed my faith in humanity. Their kids will not be taught to hate and just knowing that helps a lot.

    I have not checked the overnight news yet but from what I read yesterday, apparently we will have our first full-blown constitutional crisis on Monday. Richard Cordray appointed a Deputy Director of the CFPB yesterday who will, by statute, become the acting director until someone is confirmed for the post. The shitgibbon appointed his nominee Mick “Starve the Grannies” Mulvaney as acting director claiming it is his right under the Vacancies Act. Actually, no. The statute specifically excludes the CFPB from that act, probably because it realized that a Republican president could wreak havoc with the agency by stuffing it full of political hacks who would dismantle it. It is simply delaying the inevitable, there is little evidence that the Republican Senate will show any more respect for consumers than they have for the rule of law and education and the environment but at least the CFPB will have its day of hearings so that people can understand the enormous benefits that have come from having the agency watching out for our rights. Anyway, fireworks expected Monday when the dueling directors show up at the agency.

    FYI: This week’s Fighting Back post will be published tomorrow morning.

    See all y’all later!
