Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 2nd through July 8th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 53 and sunny in Bellingham. Last night’s dinner was tasty and fun, especially with the grand girls. I often wonder why I continue to do these family events, then I watch their pleasure in setting the tables, helping serve everything, and just being here and remind myself it’s important to nurture family traditions. But my knees are still complaining this morning so today’s patio events will have to be less demanding.

    Time for coffee…..

  2. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny skies with a chance of thunderstorms towards evening. The heat index will be 97!

The neighborhood knotheads shot off fireworks until well after 11:00pm. Some of the earlier ones sounded like M80s. My dog was a wreck; I sense a nap in my future.

So North Korea launched an ICBM which the experts say can reach Alaska and Australia. While the shitgibbon golfed (and had another “wandering” episode), his UN Ambassador, tasked with convincing the UN Security Council to take action – in the absence of a functioning State Department – took to Twitter to complain about having to work on a holiday. JHC! Are these people clueless about the meaning of public service? Did they just think that their fancy new job titles would look nice on a resume and that they did not involve any actual work?? That North Korea was emboldened by the chaos in our foreign policy and the world’s perception of the United States is not in doubt. Our options are limited – I think that President Obama noted that this was going to be our most challenging foreign policy issue so he had thought about it and had no simple solution. The shitgibbon thought he could just schmooze the Chinese president and get him to “handle” North Korea. What an ignorant – dangerous – man!

Meanwhile, the Republican’s plans for healthcare are coming into focus. I had a chance to read some of the more detailed analysis and the Cruz amendment is essentially the MacArthur amendment that brought together all the factions in the House (just the right amount of mean to suit everyone). It allows people to buy garbage policies that don’t cover anything and then offers policies for people who want full coverage at a price they can’t afford. Then they will “willingly” choose to be uninsured and FREEDOM! It is tricky enough to be able to be sold as health insurance covering millions that the “moderates” will feel as though they can vote for it. I really despise Republicans.

    See all y’all later!

    • I am really grateful fireworks are illegal inside the city limits – of all the cities around here. And it is pretty much observed/enforced. A few years back, there was a huge apartment complex fire, then a business destroyed a couple years after that. I don’t know if it’s that people realized how stupid destructive fireworks are, or if law enforcement started cracking down, but the city display is pretty much it here.

      • They are illegal here, too, but it is unenforced. I suppose you could get a ticket if your carelessness burned a house down or maimed someone. It is incredibly selfish to blow off fireworks – or let your kids do it – for your own amusement without regard to others. I really don’t understand why they can’t stop at 10pm so the rest of us can go to sleep.

  3. Good morning Meese
59 here in the Catskills going up to 85

Managed to get some sleep last night even with fireworks and my dogs freaking out.

Just saw this apology to Native Americans

  4. Good Wodin’s Day, Meese! Cloudy here in NoVa, with a current temp. of 73 F. on its way up to 80 F. Yesterday after tea we had 10 minutes of blissful hard rain! No thunder or lightning, just rain. We had another shower after dinner, just as Younger Son and family drove off to look at fireworks (not sure how that turned out), and it must have rained during the night because the streets were wet when I got up at 5 bloody 30 this morning.

Now I can stop whining about the lack of rain and remark how, for the first time in my life, I’m consciously glad to wake up each morning. Waking up means we haven’t been nuked by North Korea during the night. Goddess knows what is going to happen with that. Why can’t the same fat that befell poor Mama Cass befall Kim Wrong ‘Un?

As I don’t have to water today I’ll concentrate on indoor tasks. Hope everyone will have a good day and here, at least, the Pond is filling up!

  5. I woke up at 4:35, so I got up & got downtown early & walked before work. A little over a mile, and it’s 80 degrees. But I wasn’t going to go back to sleep, so I’m glad I made use of it. An hour later & I’m still hot — got my tea out of the freezer & kept to open a little longer than necessary. I had Little Things playing in my head — I love the transition around 3 minutes in, but the lines I kept hearing over & over we: the end is not coming, the end is here. So here, have some optimism to start your day.

  6. 69 and really humid at dawn – rained off and on all day yesterday (.8″ total) but looks to be clearing off. Or at least lightening up – be nice, I only got 9 KWHs yesterday. Heading for upper 70s it says – I’d bet mid 80s – but it’s at 99% humidity so it’s already sticky and uncomfortable, as well as still smoky from all the fireworks yesterday. I’m groggy as hell, not functioning particularly well, the professional displays took it in turns with the first starting about dark and the last starting after 11. The non-professional “displays” went on until after midnight. The cats were in hiding most of the evening – Charlie in my bed under the covers between the two body pillows, Cloud in one of the lower kitchen cupboards. Americans love make-believe war. (I do not wish ill on anybody and I certainly don’t wish war conditions on anybody, but the fact that most Americans have not experienced war in any form and don’t have the empathy or imagination to understand just how evil it is, many Americans treat real “over there” war as if it were make believe.)

About the best I can say regarding the political situation is that we’re not dead and if we’re not dead we have the ability to change it. Keep on keepin’ on. As to the community needs fundraisers – well, $15K would take over half of them off the list permanently, which is a lot lower number than it used to be. The target’s moved closer so the fact that i’m still plodding along at the same pace as discouraging as it is means we’re making progress. I like progress.

    Gotta get to work. Actually gotta get more coffee and hope to heaven it wakes me up enough I can figure out what i’m supposed to be doing. sigh. Gonna visit the Villages for a minute. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 56 and sunny in Bellingham. My BIL has peripheral neuropathy in both of his legs and feet so our house and the garden stairs are a challenge for him. He was ok here during the day but they stayed at a hotel where he has better handicapped access for sleeping and bathing. We’ll meet them there for breakfast soon and then I hope to spend the rest of the day doing laundry and recovering from the weekend activities. We had fun but I’m looking forward to a few quiet days.

    Best wishes to all!

  8. Good Thursday Meese

Popping in an out – have a writing deadline …waving and blowing kisses – have a good day

  9. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 88. The heat index is expected to be 102! Sunny skies with a chance of thunderstorms towards evening. This is similar to yesterday’s weather which ended up with some thunderstorms and a heavy downpour on the west side of the city. We just had about 5 minutes of heavy rain and it was through.

I quickly scanned the news to make sure that no one had unleashed a global nuclear holocaust and I was encouraged to see that it is “still several years away”. Yikes! I wish we had adults – actually, humans would be a good start – running our foreign policy. I wonder when Tillerson will decide that running the State Department is not like running Exxon Mobil and that he can’t handle it all from the CEO seat. I suspect that part of the problem is that we have an incoherent foreign policy, 140 characters tweeted out by a man with a 5 second attention span.

I see that OurRevolution and the berners are now going full-throated into protesting the ACA repeal. Normally I would say “the more the better” but one, their conversion after essentially handing the election to the shitgibbon over purity, is suspect, and two, they really don’t know how to do “respectful” – we saw that during the primaries and at the convention. The last thing we need is them making saving healthcare a political thing and branding it “socialism” rather than a decent, humane policy; that would make it easy for red state Senators like Capito to vote Yes to repeal. Outside agitators agitating plays well on Fox News and with the Republican base. Saving healthcare is a fight we have to win.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Good Thor’s Day morning, Meese! We’re getting enough rain here to satisfy even yrs truly. A nice shower yesterday after tea, a heavy downpour after dinner, and steady rain falling now. I won’t have to water for a couple of days! Am loving the extra leisure time. Current temp. in NoVa is 72 F., going up to 78 F.

Yes, Jan, I also scan the headlines every morning to see whether we’re in a war or not (after checking to see that I’m still alive and resident on this plane).

Resuming weight training this morning. Mr. Preschooler apparently likes his new day care better than the old one. The fact that it’s just round the corner from their house is a help to his parents, too. And Miss Pink Cheeks’ new school is a block or two from the day care, so things have really worked out in that regard.

Don’t know what to make of our current situation with North Korea and Thing’s threats. Am still mystified by the situation re Qatar: somehow, that one sneaked past me. Feeling very downcast by the seemingly unending gun murders every single day in this country. Doesn’t it ever make the evil NRA and their paid-for government officials THINK? One of them had to be moved back to intensive care yesterday. Wish I could feel sorry for the guy, but while active he promoted policies detrimental to his fellow human beings, so, meh.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Madison used to have a gun incident 4 or 5 times a year. Then our Republican legislature repealed the 48 hour waiting period and loosened the concealed carry laws. Now we have 4 or 5 shootings a WEEK and usually one results in serious injury or death. In Chicago on 4th of July 101 shooting incidents! And those guns are being shipped to the city from places where anyone can buy them regardless of previous felonies or mental illness. It is really no shock that Republicans are not upset to hear that 20,000 people will die because of their repeal of the ACA – twice as many die each year from their gun policies.

  11. Upper 60s and a bright, clear dawn – we got a totally unexpected rain after midnight (1.2″) that cleared things up but unfortunately has not dropped the humidity. Have no idea what it will actually go up to, they’ve been off by almost 10 degrees every single day for the last month, but the forecast is 85. Of course if the humidity stays this high the heat index will be around 100 even if it does only get to 85. Should be a good electricity production day if things go on as they’ve started.

I’m currently working on the basis of “if I wake up, then I’m alive and can do something to make things better” – which i admit gets a little strained when I get online and see what shape my fundraising/community needs folks are in. Need to add another urgent – kitsap river needs $5,500 within 2 weeks to pay the longest owing back taxes or they lose their house – but I’ve got a meeting in a few minutes so will have to get to her when I get back. Too many people hurting because of situations that should never exist in a first world country. Too bad first world country status is determined by how “developed” a nation is and not how caring a nation is. But I care. So I will do what I can.

    Need to check a few diaries really quickly then get to my meeting. Holding the Good Thought and sending Healing Energy to everybody. Goddess knows we all need it. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. This is so sad: so many alienated people, too many guns, too little respect for human life.

[Miosotis Familia, 48, ] was the mother of a 20-year-old daughter and 12-year-old twins — a boy and a girl. he also looked after her elderly mother, relatives and neighbors said.

Familia was raised alongside her nine siblings in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx where she still lived with her two youngest children.

Her home was just a few short miles from where she was mortally shot by an unhinged ex-con as she wrapped up her 4th of July shift early Wednesday.

    • The number of targets a black woman police officer has drawn on her is deplorable. and Evil. Healing Energy to her family, friends, and communities.

  13. Good morning, 68 and sunny in Bellingham. I’m slow and sleepy this morning, but after several naps yesterday and a long nights sleep I hope I’ve recovered from our busy 4th. I’ve got to tend to my desk this morning and I should start on several sewing projects for our daughters Etsy store this afternoon so I hope being rested means I’ll have some energy as well.

    • haha that’s great. :-D reminds me of all the donations to Planned Parenthood in Pence’s name.

    • What a mess! Did you see his bio?

Libertarian. Christian. Ex-writer for big news. Blackballed media journalist thanks to left wing/feminist job lynch mob.

“Blackballed media journalist thanks to left wing/feminist job lynch mob” – maybe you are blackballed because you CAN’T CREATE A TYPO-FREE BIO! Or maybe because who the hell would want to hire a “journalist” in default butthurt mode who can’t take time to analyze what is going on and realize that the tweet is a quote from the Declaration of Independence?

  14. Good morning, meeses! Friday … finally this weird week has a real Friday!

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79. Sunny this morning and chance of thunderstorms later in the day. Yesterday’s “chance of thunderstorms” ended up with several lines of storms moving through from 10pm to abut 1am. Between storms and fireworks, I am in serious need of sleep.

I scanned the news – ignoring the shitgibbon (and his dim-bulb spawn) being stupid, the administration showing how corrupt it is, and the Putin summit – and focused on the healthcare debate. McConnell is now suggesting that he doesn’t have the votes as the hard-right coalesces around Ted Cruz’s non-starter (there are 17 Republican votes against it and 10 votes against any bill that doesn’t have it). Townhalls are giving “moderate” Republicans convenient reasons to vote against repeal. He will be left with trying to pass a bipartisan bill that fixes the immediate problems with the markets but it is going to have to pass without the hard-right in the House and the hard-right in the Senate and so it will need to have something in it for Democrats. I am not letting my guard down yet but it is looking like the resistance is working.

A big trade deal shut out the United States which elected an isolationist know-nothing (the Poland speech was horrifying). I wonder when business leaders will realize that the deal they made to get a Republican is going to be bad for business. The only winners in Trumponomics is the fossil-fuel extraction industry and that victory will be short lived. They are going by the “if we create the supply, there will be demand” (oops!) and planning to drill in more places to create more of a glut while the rest of the world is moving away from fossil-fuel and embracing clean energy. Deregulation will remind people about why we have regulations and will fail. Eighteen attorneys general are suing Betsy DeVos for eliminating the anti-fraud rules for college loans and the EPA is being sued to follow the laws that requires it to protect the environment. The crunch will come when we reach the debt ceiling and budget impasse and business leaders realize that a working government is vital to their interests.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good morning, Moosekind, and happy Freya’s Day! Still raining lightly here in NoVa, with a current temp. of 72 F. Later it will be 87 F.

Darling Niece is coming for coffee this morning—haven’t seen her for a couple of weeks because her relatives have been visiting. Had an absolutely rotten night, so hope to make up the sleep this afternoon. Have paperwork to do and scenes to write, not to mention cleaning out the garage! Right now I don’t have the energy for anything much.

Have decided not to worry about politics today, I’m too tired. Wishing all a good day.

  16. Good Friday Meese

I’m ignoring the news today and celebrating history. Today is the birthday of Margaret Walker – black poet and writer, born July 7, 1915.

Her most famous poem is “For My People

Have a good day – and a good weekend

  17. Didn’t walk before work this morning. Left hip has been sore for a couple of days (only the left one — weird) so I thought I’d give it a rest. I used the foam roller at the gym last night & brought mine to work. Because of my size, using it on the ground on my hip…. too awkward to be helpful. At the gym they have a room with a barre that I can use to balance myself while I roll it on the wall, and here we have filing cabinets.

I didn’t walk before work, so why am I sweating at 6:30 in the morning? Ugh. At least my brain is still playing It’s the little things that give you away. They are going to have to give it a shorter title when they release it.
